Well what can I say about this dive of a pub? What a shame because the pub is in a prime location. What a joy it is to sup in an establishment which is suited to even the poorest of people. You can't beat this pub for PRICE ! But as for the standards? They don't have any. You are not informed on waiting time for food and you could wait up to an hour during their quiet period. The toiltets are filthy & the dryers don't work. Let's hope the chef don't use them. I witnessed a man emerging from the ladies toilet after doing a drugs deal. Nice.
Apparently the football is no longer televised in this pub. This is to save money and to improve the food. Shame it can't be used for more appropriate staff training. I'm pretty disappointed.
The brewers of this pub are one of the biggest in the UK. I know this because I am an ex employee. You would think what with their excellent other bars & retaurants doing so well that they would invest more in this prime location pub.

This pub has gone from bad to worse. It has a new manager who lets his dog run into the kitchen YUK ! Drug dealing is rife and done in full view of customers , staff even give the dealers the key to the disabled toilet to let them do it !!! Two mouthy sisters are running the bar and have mouths and vocabulary worse than Bernard Manning !! Was in there the other afternoon after a long time away from the place , witnessed a full blown punch up between two customers aged 70yrs and over , and this was all before 5pm ! This pub has nothing good going for it apart from cheap prices and handy location
|
Went in there recently with my mother, got abuse from the manager for having the nerve of complaining about the delay in service, got refused service and sworn at with outragous foul language, unnecessary behaviour with threats of physical abuse! (and thats when he`s sober!) Shame he can`t act the way he expects he customers to do.

This pub deserves the rating it has got. The last two times I went in (about an year apart) there was no real ale despite it being advertised. The place is as noise as a cattle market and the bar staff are surly. Only saving grace is location - good place to meet and go somewhere better!
|
I must have gone on a good day, looking at other remarks !!?? Prices ridiculously cheap. Clientale and staff very nice. Bit tatty, but not too bad.
|
Back in to meet someone - convenience is its only plus point.
This is the 1st pub you see on arriving in Walthamstow from the Tube or train. If it was knocked down house prices would go up 10% immediately it gives such a crud impression of the area. Why dont the cops/council/camra/style poilce get together to shut this shite hole down?
Beer crap, service crap, and an atmosphere that swings between a dentists waiting room or a UFC gig.

Went in here yesterday to watch the Aresnal v Liverpool game. Whilst waiting to get served this idiotic regular kept running behind the bar, much to the annoyance of the barstaff. When he wasn't doing that, he was shouting loudly about not getting served and hauling himself up on to the bar. Now, the place was fairly busy and there didn't seem to be any bouncers but the barman's attitude to this bloke was pathetic. Half-hearted attempts to pacify him didn't seem to work so they just served him before everyone else. Any reasonable publican would've booted him out or at least got a couple of burly regulars to give him a good hiding, but not here. It was like watching a stressed-out mother give in to her obese child's demands for more crisps. So sad I had to walk out!
|
Not the greatest goose i've been to. Bar staff are good, but you get some right idiots drinking there. Especially the ones that decide to yell about spurs in your ear.
|
Worked in this pub for 18mths, as much as i want to stand up for the place, i agree with many of the comments. The company which own this premises are greedy, the bar staff are terrible now with no signs of training shown (bar a couple) and the boroughs drug problem is evident from just 20 minutes in this place. It was never perfect when i was there, but never this bad.

Is this being re-furbished?? Passed by today and saw a few blokes inside sanding it all down and generally tarting it up.
|
Loving the prices of the doubles and mix! but have to say on the four occassions that I have been in there this year I have been served by the most rudess miserable barmaid ever! you know who you are I have even heard you being called miserable!

erm yes, what the others said, killed some time in here a while back waiting for a train and the only good was laughing at it, overstaffed and undermanned, sloppy and ignorant staff, the ceiling was actually leaking all the time I was there and no-one seemed to care, a mop and bucket stood next to the puddle of water while the staff chatted on mobiles and did nothing, a classic example of a rudderless ship, the pub was fairly decently if soulessly refurbished too
|
I recently visited this pub with friends (their suggestion to pop in and I did warn them)and quite frankly I was embarrassed. Luckily it was our last drink for the evening and we didn't stay long at all. This is nothing like the pub it was about 10-15 years ago and by the looks of things has slowly gone down hill since. When it first opened it was the place to go simply because there was nothing like it in the area - clean, trendy (for it's time), specialist beers, good atmosphere. Now the other pubs, especially in the Village area, have bucked their ideas up, there is very little reason (for me anyway) to venture that far from my doorstep! However, I can only thank the Goose for one reason only and hope it DOES stay open, and that's because it's keeping all the trash out of the decent pubs!
|
You have to be extremely desperate to end up in here for a pint. Absolute hate it in here, poor service and moody barstaff all add to the crap atmosphere. If ever I'm supposed to be meeting someone in Walthamstow now, I'll meet them in The Vic, just down the road as it has a far more friendly atmosphere.
|
The only thing that would improve this pub would be a bulldozer. Beer tastes like piss, place smells of piss and the staff are as friendly as a pitball with a wasp sting on its balls.
|
THE GOOSE ( no granite )is OK for a quick pint on the rare occasion when the handpumps are working , or having just escaped the nightmare that is the VICTORIA(N) tube line Food can be OK .Plasma TVs on 'mute' but piped music playing - what's that all about ??!?! Your best bet is to jump on the overground Chingford rail 'service' one stop up the line , 2 mins. to Wood Street and into the PLOUGH INN for a pint of FULLERs ( trains every 15 mins. peak periods - when the wind's blowing in the right direction )

In all the pubs I have been to, this can be classified as the worst of the bunch. The dark and dull interior decor sets first impressions off on the wrong foot. Staff are likely to be the most unpleasant and rude I have ever encountered. They define the word 'chav' along with most of the punters who drink there, who are mainly men with little english and behave similar to dogs on heat, leaving little to no comfort for young ladies in the vicinity. The toilets are a scandal, with no locks and broken toilet seats (leaving the option of your bladder bursting more appealing than ever)and the stench is beyond description. I also had the misfortune of witnessing one customer be delivered with the wrong food order, and subjected to the most discourteous and impolite behaviour by the vulgar barmaid. Oh and a regular also imformed me that it's best for one to keep all baggage and coats on you at all times as the place is widely recognised for theives who 'work the floors' on a daily basis!! The ONLY saving grace for this dump is the cheap prices of drinks. Having said that, even if they were giving them away, I don't think that cancels out all the bad points this place has to offer. Avoid at all costs!!!
|
This pub is cheap and fairly cheerful, only the regulars keep it going atmosphere wise !!!!!
The womens toilets are an absolute disgrace you feel like you want to disentfect your nether regions after using it ! The staff are friendly and service is fairly ok.
This pub is in desperate need of re-decoration and a good clean up of the toilet area urgently.
|
This pub hasn't been called the Goose & Granite for at least two years! It's next to the station, so it's good for meeting people, and it's the cheapest pub in Walthamstow. Those two things alone probably secure its popularity.
|
On the positive side. Great location. Negative side? If you happen to have the misfortune of going to the toilet in this pub do bring your own toilet seat (no joke) & loo paper for good measure. Also piles of rubbish just outside the kitchen & in full view from the customers side is a poor example of food hygiene. Went in there on a friday night & was served a voddie & coke in a pint glass with no ice. Hurry up July 1. People smoke in non-smoking areas. Compared with west end prices great if you are really skint. Large short & free mixer £2.25? Compared with other pubs within walking distance, could be the best choice providing the staff were properly trained.
|
A rotten pub. The beers cheap, but then it does taste like piss. Its only saving grace is its proximity to the tube station.
|
Yuk, yuk, yuk... first thing you see when you com out of SWalthamstow station and it doesn't create a good impression - stuffed full of chavs, blaring music... but very cheap beer - however, even this won't tempt me back
|
Felt very uncomfortable in here at 8pm on a Tuesday night! Heaven knows what it must be like at the weekend. Not the cleanest of establishments, staff not that bothered, Kids running round the bar?! (think they belonged to manager/member of staff so presumably licensing laws don't apply!). Walthamstow deserves something much better especially since it is the first pub you see when emerging the station and therefore a convienient meeting point. Though it will upset many ... maybe it needs to be bought over by All Bar One!!! Yes it is that bad!

Eugh, The Gruesome Gannet. Utter Utter dump. Unless of course you like Alco-pops, fizzy lager and dogs on the end of a string. In which case fill your boots. Awwwrrigghht maaate.. luv it.
|
Awful pub but very very cheap. Some bad experiences - no lime for corona, fridges werent working so warm bottles, no ale - have left me a bad judgement of this place. However, it is open relatively late and is right by the tube so you can escape the pub, and Walthamstow, very easily...
|
Used it again the other week after a 6-month gap. Good pint of very cheap Bass - "Things are looking up!" I thought. But then I used the gents (disgusting), then they rang the bell and cranked the music up absurdly loud to (presumably) get rid of people.....so all in all, still seriously unimpressed. If only Wetherspoons had got hold of it...
|
a truly horrid boozer. rude staff, warmish beer, and the feeling that at any time something is going to kick off. Sorry guys, but this place needs a major revamp.
anonymous - 8 Apr 2006 18:51 |
The "anonymous" who said this was a "great pub" is wrong and misguided. Avoid at all costs. The only time I have ever suggested anyone should visit this place was to an old dear at the station who asked for directions to the nearest loo, because she had waterworks trouble.
|
Not my type of pub at all - too loud and crowded - but I did have an excellent (and very cheap) pint of London Pride here. Better than it looks.
|
this pub has a really friendly atmosphere. it is the only pub i feel safe in in walthamstow. some staff are rude, but majority are nice and the manager is nice too. great pub, food is good and always have a good time. music should appeal to more though and needs to get rid of mtv base etc. put the hits or tmf on!
anonymous - 16 Feb 2006 13:37 |
Truely awful pub which is mainly used a meeting place
anonymous - 15 Feb 2006 19:55 |
Really rough pub. Always a barney going on in there. The food is dodgy as is the beer. Small TV's and just an all round disappointment. Toilets are too the left of the pub, just so you know when you get off the tube. Wouldn't go in for any other reason.
anonymous - 27 Nov 2005 16:25 |
i love this pub. staff are great. v friendly. good atmosphere dont feel intimidated. great place to go and only decent placein walthamstow.
anonymous - 16 Nov 2005 23:03 |
Was OK when it first reopened (was previously a wonderfully tatty & down-at-heel establishment called the Tower) but is now a loud, soulless Young Persons Pub with very erratic beer. Central W/stow deserves a much better flagship pub than this.
|
it's only redeeming feature is its toilet after the half hour journey from Oxford Circus.... Typical station pub which seems to smell of disinfectant and stale cigarettes everytime I go in (and no it isn't me....)
Give it a very wide berth...
|
Recent refurb made the place look good, but still unable to kick that dismally boring atmosphere. Needs a little somthing to liven it up!
anonymous - 22 Jun 2005 16:31 |
recent refurb hasnt changed it enough. Beer is so hit and miss IMO avoid
|
Recent refurb was a missed opportunity. Some of the bar staff are rudely incompetent and some have difficulty understanding English.
|
In its favour this pub has well kept beer, and a no smoking area and is convenient for the tube. However, the pub is let down by miserable bar staff and dirty tables. Handy place to meet someone for a beer or two, or for a cheap lunch but wouldn't want to spend an evening there.
|
Good range of bottled beers and a good place to lay low with your secret "good friend" cos all the punters leave you to enjoy the beer and company.
John Mannion - 12 Oct 2004 17:43 |
A real disappointment as in good location but really has nothing going for it. Agree staff could do with a few happy pills! Glasses are often dirty, beer is hit and miss and no one gives a flute if you ask for a better service. Shame on you bar staff!
Claire - 5 Oct 2004 15:34 |
It's just had a refurbishment (which in todays terms is a few new TV's installed) which has brightened the place up somewhat. However the Saffers behind the bar are rude and ill mannared. Usual beer/lager on tab - not great.
Mick - 9 Jun 2004 10:09 |
All the atmosphere of a morgue during the week and if theres no security on the door of a weekend theres often the feeling of something brewing - or that was the case when I stopped going about a year ago. Ale quality very indifferent. handy toilets though if caught short after the tube.
Paul - 20 Apr 2004 12:17 |
Good location by the station, decent food at decent prices and not a bad pint. Has a bit of a reputation though so pop in for a pint or two but don't get too drunk there.
Steven - 5 Feb 2004 18:15 |
Great location and has a reasonoably younish crowd. Should be able to do well, but you always get the feeling they are there to make money more than anything else. Shoddy attitude to running the place. Staff rude or disinterested.
Ben - 27 Oct 2003 22:23 |
The draught lager was off; it took a row to get it changed; the glasses were dirty (it took several changes to get a clean one); the proedominently female staff are miserable and obstreperous. If the pub is managed at all it must be by a moron. The fact that a seat and table is easily available at peak times shows that this pub is in rapid decline.
Mark Torrice - 26 Sep 2003 12:57 |
standard okayish no frills boozer. chain food - which is okay. relatively friendly staff. cheap drinks. near the station.
stoichkov - 29 Jul 2003 13:50 |
ok so its not gonna win pub of the year, but a lot of people say it is quite rough, i have never seen any problems and been going there once every week or two for over two years, i haven't had any bottles thrust into me, unlike our friend mr michael 2 comments down, over
ian - 23 Jul 2003 15:41 |
its alright, thats it, but for some reason i keep going back for more
anonymous - 10 Apr 2003 16:04 |
Is a safe pub. Usual Goose chain food.
anonymous - 27 Feb 2003 12:41 |
Say innit alot and drink lager to fit into this pub opposite Walthamstow Central Station. Looks safe and has good food.
