Ye Three Lords, Aldgate

The two lines by beermunster hit the nail on the head.

I suspect it only looks so busy because it is so small, there is little that makes the place attractive unless you like looking at barmaids, and they aren't to hot.

This certain serves the worst pint I have had the displeasure of drinking with London, that being great london, not just the city.

I get the feeling, the landlord just doesn't give a monkeys. I'll be shocked if Wells and Youngs do no force him out soon.

The Still and Star, Aldgate

I think the best description is scruffy little back street boozer, it is exactly that and pretends to be nothing else.

The staff are reasonable, you do however get a far better reception and service if you face is know. The ale is pretty standard by its selection and by London standards acceptable.

As for the staff making comments, I think the we and the website coming soon in the last post supports this. I like a great pint in a welcoming Pub. I think Ill stick to the Peacock down the road whose owner recommended it for a quiet one, which it is. Perhaps the staff here could take a few lessons from the staff there.

All in all, given that I gather they have only just set up shop, so to speak. I do hope they improve their customer service skills quickly. Knocking up the standard of the ale served would not go a miss either. Good luck to them. As my old school reports always said Must try Harder.

Hennessys, Tower Hill

I agree with MW81. This place looks very inviting; sadly it is just the outside that lives up to that. The ale was bordering undrinkable and the staff attitude awful. The Boutique comment below I think can only be a description of its size, it has nothing else boutique about it. Dire, is the word Id use.

The Peacock, Tower Hill

I happened upon this place by pure chance last Friday night. As it had no outside lighting on, but seemed to be in full swing, we were slightly confused, but thought in for a penny. It worked out that it was the Bosses birthday and both staff and customers seemed to be enjoying the fact. I asked one guy if this was a special event, his reply, No mate, its The Peacock, its always open late, I wont go anywhere else. We were rather unceremoniously, dragged into the fun, and enjoyed it immensely. Even the somewhat harsh banter about the accents!

It certainly is, the most friendly place that I have found near my new found home and I look forward to visiting often. Though closed at weekends, which being from the north was rather a shock in my first week, the landlord, as it has been said before on this threat, took time to explain where to go and what to see. He even gives recommendations to surrounding establishments, which seems rather insane, given the competition between pubs and bars that anyone would actually do this. His rationale, sometimes you just want a decent pint and something different, which I cannot provide for. I have taken up one or two of his suggestions already and have not been let down by them.

I cannot sing the praise of him and his staff enough; friendly, efficient, jovial, just do not sum this place up. I would border on Outstanding, with of course, the best pint we had drank all night.

The Town of Ramsgate, Wapping

This Pub was highly recommended to me by a guy who owns a Pub near Tower Hill, just up the road, who had found out Id landed in the Cpt Kidd. I was at first, expecting it to be a wind up, one guy with a Pub sending me elsewhere, thankfully it wasnt.

It is a great little place, excellent ale, proper food at great prices and very good staff and customers. It has a lovely little area out back, though the weather didnt really attract more than a cursory glance, I can see myself whiling away a few afternoons there come the summer.

The guy who runs the other place said; dont be surprised if I see him in there. Sadly, he was not evident, but his recommendation is certainly worth a pint or two. To be recommended by another landlord is a great accolade and testament to the obvious hard work done by the owners and their staff, who I hope I will get to no better in future.

A lovely Pub and more that worth one visit. Well done.

The Captain Kidd, Wapping

Given I am a new entry to this area and a northern lad, I thought Id give this a go. It is after all, probably my nearest Pub.

Disappointment is what I found. It is a lovely looking Pub, with a great history according to what is written on the walls. It does sadly, lack all I want in a Pub, atmosphere, good food and good beer. I have a feeling I have moved into an area that lives on tourists and cares not for the local.
