Cheeky Monkeys, Hull

A loud and tacky bar with nothing for those who have a modicum of taste

Bedroom, Hull

A loud teenager's lager and alco-pop bar which changes its name every six months

The Nettle Inn, Milltown

We were surprised to read the earlier reviews of this pub after we visited it in August 2008.

We stumbled upon it during a rambling drive through the surrounding country lanes and were tempted in by the pubs quaint and colourful exterior.

Inside the pub was a little dark but once the eyes adjusted to the light its real charm was revealed. Very warm and welcoming with log fires and a rustic appeal that made us want to loiter. Surprisingly large inside with several cosy small rooms and a larger restaurant area.

The 'Farmers' beer on draught was superb, and the food we had (steak and ale pie & home made burger with blue cheese) was first class. Traditional favourites but made with an individual twist that made them extra special.

For us a definite recommendation and a pub to be revisited the next time we get the chance.

The Gardeners Arms, Hull

I hope ladnewton and mineisalandlord manage to visit again sometime now the refurb is completed. This is easily one of the best pubs in the Hull area for quality of real ale, usually about 5 choices. It also still maintains that useful separate rooms for different folks policy which many pubs have abandoned in favour of the 'let's knock through and make a massive room, fill it with trendy types and alienate our original clientele' policy! Front room is very nice and fairly quiet, back room is the place to be for loud music, pool tables etc. I haven't tried it but I'm told the food in here is excellent too.

The Cornerhouse, Beverley

Good selection of beers, nice atmosphere with a good mix of people. Can get very busy at weekends though as Beverley is a very popular pub crawl.

The Rose and Crown Inn, Slipper Bridge

Popped in for a drink and a meal one afternoon a few weeks ago. Beer was good and food good, not exceptional but generous portions and very enjoyable. Would go again if in the area.

Walters Bar, Hull

Wow. A real ale pub that doesn't make you feel like you should be wearing a flat cap or curlers and a headscarf. Fantastic range of beers and a nice trendy decor. Nice atmosphere and the bar staff are very helpful in recommending beers.

The Northwood Hills, Northwood Hills

Hmm. Strange place! It's an Indian Restaurant and a pub. We arrived during the day because we had booked a room for the night and it looked lovely. When we came back at night, it was packed out with people sitting down eating and also standing around drinking. Very friendly place and had good conversations about football as our team Hull City had just won the playoff final to gain promotion to the Premiership. Everyone congratulating us and wanting to talk about the game.
Then we went upstairs to our room...Oh My God what a hovel. Total contrast with the pub/restaurant downstairs, it was truly awful and the worst thing was that the pub had VERY loud music blasting through the ceiling until 2.45am. Not conducive to sleep! In conclusion, nice food, friendly atmosphere but for Gods sake don't stay overnight!

The Gait Inn, York

Lovely little family run village pub in a beautiful area of the Yorkshire Wolds that attracts lots of ramblers. It's completely unspoiled interior might look a bit grubby to some fussy types but I think it adds to its charm. Serves excellently kept cask ales too. Food is wonderful, huge portions of proper home cooked pub food, steak and ale pies and massive yorkshire puddings etc. Go for a walk round the village or up Millington Dale to work up an appetite then sit outside either at the back for some peace and quiet or at the front and watch the world ramble by.

The Railway Inn, Hull

Bland, bland, bland. Pub has been taken over by dining facilities and every table is already set with cutlery and condiments. There is also a restaurant attached to it so I don't really see the need to have the pub laid out as one too. If we hadn't been eating I would have felt very uncomfortable sitting at a table set for a meal with just a drink in front of me. You can serve bar meals and bring cutlery with the meal. Food was good and large portions but absolutely no atmosphere in the place at all, most customers seemed to just eat their meal and then leave, as indeed we did. There just was no encouragement to stay for a drink afterwards. My rating reflects the fact that the place is certainly more of a restaurant than a pub rather than that the place is bad, it isn't bad, just not a nice 'pub'.

Blue Bell Inn, Old Ellerby

Proper old fashioned local village pub with a roaring log fire in the main bar and another one in a little 'snug' with comfy seats just room for about half a dozen friends to sit together. Cask ales in excellent condition and a warm friendly atmosphere. It's full of little trinkets and ornaments, some might find that tacky but I just feel it shows a much loved home. Plus you can play a great game of I-spy if you so wish!!

The Hole in the Wall, Hull

The place itself is a bit grotty, could do with a good refurbishment. The beer however is very well kept and their regular Roosters Yankee is excellent.
As someone else commented, very much a local's local but still a welcoming feel and some real 'local characters' to observe whilst enjoying your pint!

The Chestnut Horse Inn, Great Kelk

When we visited a couple of years ago, it was a Cask Marque pub. A long time ago so I can't actually remember what I drank but I do know it was very well kept beer. Very friendly place frequented by the local residents of this hamlet but even us townies were made very welcome and didn't feel out of place as is the case in some locals where everyone knows one another.
