The Pendlebury, Pendlebury

Closed. Another dead pub in this area. Probably not the last.

Pub still closed and looks unlikely to open again. Not surprising, and a shame as a few years ago this was the best pub in the area. Allowed to go down in a downward spiral for years, it developed a bad reputation.

I should add that my original username on here was drphibes but I no longer have access to the email account I used for that.

Greyhound, Boothtown Worsley

I originally posted a brief review of this pub in 2007 based on several visits from earlier that year. I have re-visted the place a number of times this year. Its not a bad place, but has the potential to become one.

The one thing that is apparant are the self-promoting reviews on here. Two reviews all of 2008 up to 17/12 /08, then 4 excellent reviews in one hour , what are the chances of that? Again recent postings promoting various nights at the pub.

Sky Sports is not the answer to improve pubs. Plasma screens dotted around pubs tend to have a detrimental effect, it will drive some customers away completely, and bring in others who wll only show up for football. I had the misfortune of turning up when a recent united game was shown , the owners need to keep an eye of some of them. The mix of karaoke/poker/disco/tv sports does not make a pub, its the people. A number of pubs have tripped up wit this formula, most notably the Bridgewater in Worsley which was ruined by it (the sport/disco). No coincedence that other pubs have ripped out Sky.

The food was not bad , but it will not sell itself on the food. The catchment area is huge for this pub considering the very limited competition - there is no reason why it should not be full of locals most nights. If it isn't something is not quite right.
