The Wellington Arms, Watford

A few minutes walk to Watford national rail station.

Went here to watch Chelsea vs United season clincher as I had heard there were a number of big screens. I wasn't disappointed - there were indeed lots of screens and we won 3-0. Nice interior and leather sofas. Simple food menu, could do with another veggie option (even it's just a burger), but what we had was nice.

Beer is also important and it fares quite well. They had Rebellion Mutiny (rare, good condition), Courage Directors (good condition) and London Pride. Hopefully there's always a guest beer on.

Recommended.

Southern Cross, Watford

I've been here a few times, primarily for the quiz, which was quite a challenge but lots of fun.

It's a large pub with a modern light and comfortable interior. Lots of seats and always popular when I've been in. I hear their food is nice too but haven't tried it myself.

Beer wise (always up there on the importance list) it's above average, with Duchers IPA (v.good) and a few other guest ones. However it seems having a few beers off is a regular event, so you can't guarantee you'll get the 4 or so real ales you'd find on a good day. Maybe I've just been unlucky but I've had to move onto Guinness on one occasion.

Recommended but for a pub this size I'd expect more reliability on the beer front.

The One Crown, Watford

Only one real ale on offer - Trings' Jack O' Legs for a long time as far as I know - but has a reputation for being well kept.

A number of TVs for watching sport and very nicely decorated. The central bar naturally divides the pub and there's a pool table in the far corner.

It's a pity there's only one real ale on; if they upped it to 2-3 this would make a big difference, as everything else is good. There are very few decent pubs in Watford so it's worth checking this place out.

The Barrowboy and Banker, London Bridge

This Fullers pub has highly elaborate/interesting interior decor, and it's large enough for you to find a corner to sit in at lunch (not always an easy thing in such a busy location). The sandwiches I had there were nice. Pretty good atmosphere.

Slightly above average selection of beers, such as Discovery and ESB, totaling around 4 or 5 beers in all. Condition is ok, not great.

Handy if you're working nearby, but it's not worth going out of the way for.

The Market Porter, Borough

Been once and was very impressed. Great selection of real ale and good decor inside and out. Could do with a few more tables but that's my only criticism.

The sheer number of reviews shows how popular this place is. I can't remember the last time I've seen so many rare beers on draught.

Highly recommended and I can't wait to go again.

All Bar One, London Bridge

Nice selection of foreign beers, such as Leffe and Edelweiss, which are also in good condition.

I've only visited it around lunchtime. It's a flashy light coloured bar rather than your dark traditional pub. The food menu seemed ok for a quick lunch, even offering this like hummous and other 'tapas' style dishes. Good location near the station but there's not a lot of atmosphere. For what it is it's pretty good.

The Artichoke, Croxley Green

Perfect location on the village green, with seats out the front and in the very nice garden to the side. Huge potential to be a classic, however...

But the beer selection isn't great, standard for the area with the likes of Greene King IPA and Bombardier. If you're lucky there may be a guest beer. In the summer Youngs' Golden Zest (v.nice) was on, but the regular beers aren't great and I've had a few undrinkably conditioned (basically off) ones in the past. If they improved the beer selection and quality this would be a great pub, but as it is there's little reason to visit unless you happen to be walking past in the summer and fancy a cold pint of lager.

Keep me posted if they improve the real ale on offer.

The Rose and Crown, Rickmansworth

This is primarily a pub to eat at and is located quite a way out from the centre of Rickmansworth. A good option if you want to eat out at lunchtime. There's a great conservatory if you can get a table there, and the garden is very nice and large.

I've been 2-3 times and the food has been good. However the menu had barely changed from one year to the next; as a vegetarian, options are always limited and if the menu stays the same it means there's less incentive to return anytime soon. But I did like the food, and by now the menu might have changed.

The range of beer isn't large in number but you can get Deuchers IPA and Hoegaarden, both very nice.

The Millhouse Tavern, Rickmansworth

This is now called the Millhouse Tavern.

Very busy but it's overpriced and has no proper real ale. On Fri/Sat nights it's full of young people with no taste in drinking anything other than lager and alcopops. When I went the floor was wet with spilt drink and the music was so loud you couldn't hear a thing.

Trying to be positive.. they do have Heineken, one of the best lagers, so if that's your thing it's not too bad. Also it's a possible venue you want to watch live sport on the TV, but there's not many good seats so get there in advance.

Real ale drinkers, I urge you not to bother. I'd call it a young persons' pub, but I'm a young person and won't be going in there again.

The Pennsylvanian, Rickmansworth

A non-smoking pub - great to see. Excellent central location and low prices.

Very nicely decorated, good atmosphere and lots of space. Usually has a fair number of real ales but it's rare to find something unusual. It would be nice to see them replace some of the boring regulars such as London Pride and Courage with beers from micro-breweries. At worst there's the Kronenbourg Blanc to fall back on, so it's not so bad.

Probably the best pub in Rickmansworth town centre and one of the best Wetherspoons around.

The Sportsman, Croxley Green

Lively atmospheric pub with live music every week. There's usually a couple of new guest beers to try at each visit. A long-standing regular beer is Tring's Sidepocket For A Toad, a very nice pale session beer with character. Beer condition can be a bit variable but it's easily the best pub for real ale in Croxley by a mile.

On the downside it's very smokey, hopefully that will change when the new legislation comes in.

The Land of Liberty, Peace and Plenty, Heronsgate

Easily the best pub for miles around. Top-notch beer quality and there are always many new beers to try, many of which you won't see elsewhere.

Location wise it's slightly out of the way but it's well worth making the extra effort, be it for a quick drink or the whole evening. Relaxing atmosphere and friendly staff.

Hopefully it will become non-smoking before too long.
