Cross Scythes, Sheffield

For my money, by far the nicest pub in the area, although we don't go here as much as we used to now that some friends have moved further afield.
Thornbridge Brewery; offers a range of beers, and often does food nights.

Sportsman Inn, Sheffield

Used to be fond of this place, but over the past 10-5 years it's seemingly been through several owners, until it settled in its current guise, where televisions showing Sky Sports News adorn every wall.
Very busy on a Saturday night, rammed full of people who bellow to each other even though the ambient noise doesn't require them to.

Mount Pleasant, Sheffield

We've been in several times over the past few years, and it's always seemed nice and friendly place for a quiet drink.
We went in on a Saturday night recently, though, and it was dead. Five other people (if you count a vast dog), three of whom appeared to be the owners and their daughter, doing homework. They had to turn the lights on in a room for us, and it seemed like having us in there was an inconvenience. Disconcertingly soft floor.
Soon joined by four regulars, all over 70.

Prince of Wales, Sheffield

Recently closed.
Went in a few weeks before on a Saturday night, and it was dead. Four other people in there, one being the barman's girlfriend.
It looked like they'd tried to go trendy and it was awful. A redundant video-jukebox, a giant telly in one corner showing freeview music channel The Hits, big mirrors, coloured LEDs in the window, those ubiquitous Pete McKee cartoons and the names of irritating band like The Jam scrawled on the wall.
A shame, because when we first moved to the area, it was a nice, friendly place.
