The Wheatsheaf, Frome

Please disregard the above comments. The pub is now under new management and has been for some time. It is no longer what you would regard as a conventional pub it has now become more of an entertainment venue. Live music / DJ's etc. To get the full picture it would be better to look them up on line to find out more.

The Bell, Rode

I used to be a frequent visitor to this pub but have only recently returned to sample the new look and image. I am sorry to say the experience left me rather cold. My partner am I arrived in the early evening with the intention of sampling the ale and food. The decor is cosy and pleasant, the bar staff greeted us pleasantly but soon decided they would rather chat to each other whilst serving us. We sampled two different ales and both were cloudy and not in very good condition to taste. The barmaid did not even notice the beer was not at its best when she returned with my change, which she just put on the counter and walked away, and when I tried to get her attention she just carried on talking to her collegue. I gave up and turned to the menue. Sadly the presentation of the menue was not eye catching, the food selection uninspiring and the price not inviting. Needless to say we drank up and left. I hope this was just a one off, I will leave it for a while before I try again just to see if they can improve on the experience.

The Cross Keys Inn, Corsley

I am an occasional visitor to this pub and have noted its ups and downs over the years. On my latest visit I was pleased to see the bar fill with lcocals and visitors, I think something has improved. The staff were friendly, the food good and the beer well kept, just a shame that Wadworths think that a guest ale is another Wadworth brew. My only negative is the service, even though I arrived at 6.30 in the evening it took over 3/4 of an hour to get a menue, being told they had to wait for the specials to be written up. After another long wait I had to remind the chap behind the bar that I was waiting to order. Eventually someone took our order, only to return a few minutes later to say they had got the specials wrong and it would cost us more money to have the meals we ordered. The meal, by the time it arrived, was good but along with the evening rather spoilt by the poor customer service. To top it off they got the bill wrong, sadly not in my favour. I would not wish to put anyone off from going to this pub as it has a lot going for it but I hope they take note and improve the customer service.

The Black Lion, Longfield

The decor is tired and the place could do with a good refurbish and clean but if you want a mind boggling selection of ale you will not be disappointed.

The Masons Arms, Marston Gate

Since reopening last year this pub has improved considerably. It is cleaner, brighter and the staff helpful and friendly. Usually has three live ales on tap which have always been in good condition on my visits. Although the food menu is slightly limited the food itself is good and reasonably priced.

The Poachers Pocket, Chelynch

I have not been here for years and I thought it was about time I gave it another visit. I am pleased to say that the greeting was friendly and the locals chatty, I felt comfortable and relaxed. The ale was well kept and the food good value and tasty. I will return.

The Cross Keys, Blatchbridge

Now reopened. The landlord has moved from the nearby Masons Arms and taken over this one. I have noted that since reopening the car park has been full and the place quite lively so best I give it a try. The pub is divided into two areas, the bar area which is not that large and a similar sized restaurant. The decor is bland and in need of some attention. Only one live ale, quite drinkable but most of the drinkers I saw seemed to prefer lager. The food was very reasonably priced and although I have had better I have no complaints. Overheard comments from other diners were very favourable. The reception and service was friendly and attentive but a little slow as the only staff member was serving a busy bar and nearly full restaurant.

The Bell, Standerwick

This pub has had a string of managers who have not lasted very long and have not done much to make anything of the place. However, my daughter told me that new people had taken over and she was impressed by the food and atmosphere. So, on a whim I decided to give it another try as I had not been in the place for many years. I am pleased to say that the landlords welcome was friendly and attentive. Three live beers, all well kept, and the food tasty, well presented and reasonably priced. It is not a cosy village pub but is clean and spacious. It has a large garden which I think would be nice to sit out in with the children in good weather.

The Red Lion, Heytesbury

Friendly and pleasant. Well kept cask ale. Snug area for those who want a quiet chat. Games room at the back of the pub, so no danger of getting prodded by a pool cue whilst supping ale or eating. Food good. Very large sunny garden with a river at the bottom, great to relax in when the weather is good. Also has accommodation for the weary traveler.

The Seymour Arms, Witham Friary

I have not been back for a while but managed a visit the other day. John and Jean (landlords) have hardly changed. Still just as friendly, attentive and chatty. Still cannot beat the prices, quality or unique atmosphere. If you are down this way a visit is a must.

The Horse and Groom, East Woodlands

Used to be a good pub with vibrant, friendly local atmosphere, not so much now. Sadly more interested in diners than drinkers. Service especially at the bar sporadic. However, the only negative thing to say about the food is that the portions are a little over generous. One does like room for desert and a pint or two. The garden is very pleasant in the summer.

The Cross Keys, Blatchbridge

At present closed down. For anyone taking it on it will take a great deal of imagination and hard work to make anything of it. Never been a particularly popular venue

The Fox and Hounds Inn, Tytherington

A pleasant pub but sadly lacking in atmosphere. Decor uninspiring. Staff pleasant. Food good and reasonably priced. Not a drinkers pub. Only one real ale.

The White Hart Inn, Trudoxhill

A stone built traditional village inn dating back about 400yrs. Large bar with log fire, seperate dining room, sunny enclosed garden. New tenants April 2007. Well kept real ales, White Gold Bitter brewed for the pub by a local brewery. Food is very good and resonably priced. Well worth a visit.

The Kicking Donkey, Brokerswood

Pleasant and interesting country pub not far from Brokerswood Country Park. Large garden with kids play area, wonderful on a summers evening or lunchtime. Good changing selection of live beer. Draught cider. Seems popular for food but I have not eaten there for a long time.

The Bull Inn, Hardway

21/07/2006. A pleasant out of the way country inn. Near to Stourhead and Alfred's tower. Nice garden, friendly staff. Now non smoking within the pub. Has had a good local reputation for food but I am sorry to say that my last visit was a disappointment. The food is above average price for the locality and although the menu looks interesting the food was bland. The speed with which the food was served suggests a reheat job, not recommended for good fresh fish. Beer good.

The Seymour Arms, Witham Friary

Not the easiest pub to find but well worth it if you like original village pubs.Rated in the top 100 unspoilt pubs. Very popular with locals. No food or frills. Bar billiards. Good beer (usually only one live beer) and cider. Built by the Duke of Somerset about 1860 for the village as the old pub burned down about 200yrs earlier. The present landlady was born in the pub. Safe garden and village for children. Friendly atmosphere.

The Strode Arms, West Cranmore

Popular village pub. Comfortable with beams and inglenook fire. Opposite the village pond and just round the corner from the East Somerset steam railway. Wadworths beer, well kept. Friendly service. Good food, seasonal variations, fairly priced.

The Seymour Arms, Witham Friary

This is not an easy one to find but if you like the good old British pub it is worth finding. It is one of the most unspoilt pubs in England. It has not changed much since it was built about 1860 and has been in the same family for most of that time. Basic village pub, well frequented by locals. Cider and live beer. No frills, food or canned music. Occasional Morris Men. Homely pub. Nice safe garden and village for the kids. Bar billiards.

Poplars, Wingfield

This Wadworths pub has a rural setting with its own cricket pitch. Parking sometimes a bit of a problem in summer. The pub has 2 linked bars/dining area. It is comfortable, cosy and clean. There is a cricket theme to the pub. It is popular with locals and diners, the food is very good but maybe a pound or two more than the average, the beer well kept. Wadworths do tend to charge premium prices for their beer and in recent years I have not found another brewers beer on the pumps. Service is friendly and good. There are no friut machines, televisions or intrusive music. The garden great on a sunny afternoon

The Bell, Rode

Good size friendly, comfortable Freehouse on main road at the edge of a nice village. Popular for food and monthly theme nights. Courage Best and Butcome as standard and usually two guest ales. Reasonable prices. Friendly staff and local clientele, sit in the corner and do the crossword or join in. Pleasant garden in the summer. Large car park. Pool table with enough room to actually walk around and use a cue. Clean toilets.
