The Waltham Oak, Walthamstow

After getting past the scarey hoodies on bikes loitering outside smoking herbal 'medicines' I entered and was shocked at the change to this once nice pub that was the Chesnuts. They have made it into a poor version of one of the better Weatherspoon Pubs. I looked at the menu and it oozed frozen food so I decided to go later to the Fizzi Italian next door. I went down the other day to Wood Street to The Pig and Whistle and I think they are doing the same sort of thing there but was told by the builders that that is going to be a gastro pub. The Fish stall has even moved up to Woodford! Massive souless place now. Such a shame.

The Nags Head, Walthamstow

My Nan and Grandad used to sing in this place when it was a pub. I don't know how to describe it really except it reminded me of the Castle Round the corner and a customer told me they are the same owners! It seems that the kitted both pubs out of a charity shop and ripped up some old bedspreads to cover the tables. Says it all really? Covered tables in a pub? They don't even serve food!. The drink selection was fair enough except that the wine that was served up was undrinkable, and I had to wait while the three girls finished their conversation about a bloke they fancy. I ended up with a pint of bitter that was'nt bad but expensive. They have jazz of sorts on a Sunday so may pop back then as it was dead when I went in. Smoke was unbearable and I smoke but they have a tent out the back where you can get fresh air.

The Lord Brooke, Walthamstow

I cannot work out if this place has just opened or is about to close as there is hardly any stock! A very scarey place though. I was the only person in there without a scar and 2 of the customers were woman!

The Plough, Walthamstow

Ha ha ha! Could'nt believe what has happened to this place! Went in last Friday. Last time I came to UK years ago you could hear the out of tune warbling of a Kareoke singer as you got of the train. The place is quite relaxing now with beardy ale drinkers and teacher types.

Had a lovely couple of half pints of Portugese lager served by a lovely looking young girl who stayed looking lovely until she opened her mouth to reveal a missing front tooth. One of the regulars told me it had just fell out and not to laugh!

While I was there, more beardies came in (including bearded ladies!) The place was soon crowded because of a famous musician who I had'nt heard of but everyone was keen to watch this guy. On the whole I found it quite an interesting place now and as a cat lover liked the big Tom Cat who pounced up demanding to be stroked!

The Pig and Whistle, Walthamstow

Hav'nt been to this place for yonks and got off at Wood Street to see if some old pals of mine still drank there. The place was closed down and looked derelict but a builder came out and told me that it was going to be a restaurant to rival every other place in Walthamstow! That won't be hard then!

He told me that they got to solve the rat problem though as it has been in a state of disrepair for ages and the old owner had thrown the towel in. Maybe they are gonna do Rattatouille as a speciality? I suggested this to the builder who did'nt get the joke, but to look at him, he seemed to have been the victim of failed lobotomy, the poor fellow! He even said that the bloke who says F****** on tele was going to open it. When I suggested Gordon Ramsey, he looked at me with another vacant stare and said 'Nah not that one!' Who else could it be I wondered?

Looks promising though as I saw they were putting pavent slabs on the floor to replace that stinking carpet that used to stick to the soles of your feet. I must pop in when it is open to have a look at the menu. You never know, this may be the start of Covent garden in Wood Street.

The Castle, Walthamstow

What on Earth has happened to this place? It has always been a bit of a dump but some bright spark has turned it into a gypsy's caravan. Frightening bar staff! I walked in waited to be served, waited, waited and waited. It was so bad I went to the Queens in Orford Road instead. If they carry on like that it will be flats like the poor old Windmill!
