The Blacksmiths Arms, Willesborough

I gave this pub a good review seven months ago. I understand that it's now under new management and sadly, it's not gone well. We ordered food that took more time than it should to arrive and the orders we all mixed up (one of us even had to re-order). Not good when we had two diabetics in our party.

Seems to me that there is little organisation there now. Sadly, this means I'm going to have to downgrade them by two points.

Six Bells, Woodchurch

SatNav/GPS: N 51 degrees 04.869', E 0 degrees 46.308'

Nice pub with wood interior. Friendly staff, good selection of ales (though not all available). Soft drinks nice and cold. Good selection of pub food, delivered quickly. Jukebox available with a selection of 100 CDs. Games available, both traditional (table football, skittles) and modern (one arm bandit type and video quiz). Ample parking and front and back gardens.

The Britannia Inn, Dungeness

I didnt find the landlord here particularly friendly here either. Certainly not child friendly (in fact they have a child free zone). Doesnt accommodate larger parties without a reservation (tables in the child zone only had a maximum table size of six). The lardlord acted as if I was invisible when I was ordering food, despite the fact I was standing right in front of him. When I went to order drinks, he took an order from someone who just turned up, even though Id been waiting longer. I hate pubs that do that. Its just rude. The fish and chips were good, though they had more bones than I would have liked (especially the one that poked into my teeth). Although Im happy to go back to Dungeness, its unlikely Ill be coming back here. It may be the only pub in the area, but Id rather travel to better pubs.

The World's Wonder, Warehorne

The Worlds Wonder is located on the main road on the way to Warehorne. We sat in the beer garden as it was a nice day. We had to move some of the garden tables as we had a large party, but the staff didnt mind. In fact, it gave them an excuse to get more tables out. Our table was covered by umbrellas, though the others were under a huge gazebo.

I ordered fish and chips for lunch, while the rest of my party ordered a variety of ploughmans and baguettes. The order didnt come out all at the same time and as my hot meal came out first, I had to start without the others as it would have gotten cold. It was beautifully cooked though and the chips were excellent. The coke on the other hand was flat and not very cold. Nevertheless, the staff couldnt do enough for you.

The place was very tidy and nicely laid out and the staff enjoyed a chat with the customers. Ill be going back here for sure.

The Blacksmiths Arms, Willesborough

Despite being close to the M20, this is a nice pub in a nice area. Quite a spacious pub with a nice garden (though the tables were green with moss and need cleaning or replacing). However, the walls and ceilings have been painted red which makes you feel quite enclosed and it makes the whole pub feel very dark.

I had the Chilli and Chips with Cheese, which was a mission to get through. Not a bad thing, it was gorgeous food and it certainly filled a hole. The rest of my dining companions were equally satisfied with their meals. If you want to eat here, you wont be disappointed and none of our meals cost more that 8.

Soft drinks were nice and chilled. Toilets were clean and in good order. There is a car park opposite the pub specifically for customers.

Honest Miller, Brook

The Honest Miller is a pub I first went to back in 1987 and it hasnt changed physically on the outside. The car park was a small hard-standing area, although there was additional gravel parking on the other side of the property. The interior is still well kept and the pub is now under new management. The landlord was very friendly and made sure we were welcome.

We ordered food, which took a bit longer than I like to arrive. However, the atmosphere was so pleasant that I, for one, didnt mind waiting. The delay was certainly compensated by the food when it arrived. I had the Gammon Steak, which was served with some of the best pub chips I have ever tasted (only wished there were a few more of them, as they were delicious). The pub also served a good selection of traditional British favourites, such as Spotted Dick and Jam Roly Poly. Absolutely spot on!! If you ever have the chance to eat here, DO IT!!!!

The soft drinks we had were from a pump, though I was given the choice of pump or bottle. The pumped coke and orange juice tasted fine and was beautifully chilled.

All in all, this was one of the best pubs Ive been to lately and many of our party are already talking of going back there very soon (maybe to the quiz nights that they hold each week). I only hope Im with them at the time.

The Walnut Tree Inn, Aldington

Well, The Walnut Tree had promise, being situated in the picturesque village of Aldington. There is only parking available for 10 cars, otherwise you have to park on the road. Getting to the pub was difficult as the most direct route from Ashford was closed off due to a road incident. That meant having to use back roads which are very slim, especially if you have a lot of traffic.

The pub itself is nice enough inside with wood fires burning away and generally having a country pub feel to it. As a non-drinker, I had the coke which was fizzy and tasted fine. The orange juice was good too. They had a wide selection of food available from the menu and specials board.

However, this is where the problems started. A friend of mine had problems paying for food and drink with his card, as the card authorisation device couldnt pick up a single and eventually the staff had to ring it through. This caused a delay at the bar, as they only had one member of staff working the bar. The delivery of the food took 25 minutes; a little longer than Id like. It wasnt really that busy in there and Ive seen other busier pubs deliver a lot quicker. I had the sausage and eggs for lunch. The sausages were overcooked and burnt where the skin had split. The eggs and chips were greasy and left a nasty aftertaste.

The toilets were my biggest cause for concern. Apart from them being rather dated and in need of repair, there was only a single towel available for the men to dry their hands. There were no paper towels (even though there was an empty dispenser) and no hand blowing machines. Im not sure but I believe this to be a Health and Safety violation (Im having this checked out). All in all, this pub didnt rate highly with me. I will give it some points for the friendly nature of the staff.

The Halfway House, Challock

The Halfway House is easily to reach by road, as its on a crossroads so it can reached easily from Ashford, Charing, Faversham and Chilham. However, the nearest railway station is at least 4 miles away. Ample parking is available in the pubs dedicated car park.

As in previous reviews, I only normally drink coke which was passable (not quite as fizzy as I like it, but not too bad). The pub is laid out very well, very spacious with plenty of tables available. There is a wide range of food available from a set menu and various specials boards. It took less than 15 minutes for our food to arrive from ordering time (very impressive). The staff even took our order from the table, which my friends whom had visited before had never experienced on previous visits. I had the Chicken, Cheese and Bacon Melt. The chips were perfectly cooked (none were too thin or burnt) and the salad had a very nice dressing on it. I have been told that the soup in this pub is very nice, though none of my party had soup on this occasion. Following the recommendation, Im keen to sample the soup at a later date. However, todays soup of the day was tomato which isnt among my favourite flavours.

The toilets were clean and in a good state of repair with no nasty odours. The staff were very friendly and attentive (in fact, our server came over twice to see if we were ready to order). One thing is for sure; you wont be disappointed with the food and drink here.

The Old Rectory, Leybourne

The Old Rectory is a pub/restaurant (formerly Chimneys) located in a low crime residential area. The pub is easily accessible by road (being less than half a mile away from the M20 and A20). The closest railway station is West Malling. Ample parking is available at the front of the premises and as there are shops in the area, you can also park in the shop parking areas should you need to (though I never needed to any time Ive been there). As I dont drink, Ive only ever drunk the coke there, which was nice and fizzy and cooled perfectly. You are always given the option for ice and lemon (its nice to be given a choice rather than having them if you want them or not).

I havent eaten there myself, but they often do a two-for-one meal deal on a Wednesday night (with vouchers). Some friends of mine took advantage of this deal a few days ago. Six meals came to around 15 in total. Very impressive!!! The meals arrived within 20 minutes so very efficient and were enjoyed by all. There is plenty of seating available from hard chairs around tables and a few sofas. They have a plasma TV which often shows sport and a pool table area. Recently, they have held karaoke nights, which proved very popular. The toilets were clean and tidy. The staff are friendly and attentive. A very good pub as far as Im concerned and always a pleasure going there.

The Tickled Trout, Wye

The Tickled Trout is a typical country pub with brick and wood beam dcor and a open fire (gas fuelled). The pub is easily accessible by both road and rail (right next door to Wye station, albeit across a river). Parking at the rear of the pub is excellent (we went at lunchtime so it wasnt busy, but even in the evenings, parking is ample). My wife and I both had diet coke which was sadly flat. Im keen to try the coke again next time we visit to see if this is a common problem or a one off. Lunch arrived within 20 minutes of ordering. I had the ham ploughmans, which consisted of several chunks of ham, 2 pieces of bread, pickled onions, lots of pickle, salad and two portions of butter. A very nice and satisfying lunch. I was there with several friends and there were no complaints from anyone regarding the food. The toilets were clean and tidy. The staff were friendly and attentive. All in all, a very good pub indeed. Always a pleasure going there and widely liked by the local population.
