Southern Cross, Watford

Yes, an OK pub with some splendid beers - and how good it is to find Theakston's Mild is one of the regular beers. Is it worth it's place in the current Good Beer Guide? Possibly - maybe certainly in the context of the availabilty of decent beer in Watford!

Fishery Inn, Boxmoor

My experiences at this pub have been mixed: once or twice good, pleasant service; but, a very casual and care-less attitude, three times. So, now, I spend my money elsewhere!

Isn't it all dependent upon the quality of the management? - anywhere?

The Full House, Hemel Hempstead

Some JD Wetherspoon pubs are very well designed and are also run by attentive staff who seem to care about good beer and good service - that's why they get into The Good Beer Guide. Sadly, this JD's is not one of those, and it will need a more committed management team before it can even hope to become one of the better branches of a good pub chain!

But, because there are lots really dreadful pubs in Hemel and the Full House is a bit better than them, I can't score this one less than 5!

The Unicorn, Kings Langley

Since Scott and Claire Rushton took over this pub, about 2 years ago, it's improved greatly. The food is good and the Adnam's Bitter and Fuller's London Pride are well kept. The serving staff are, generally, very pleasant and efficient.

As The Unicorn is a popular after-work watering hole, it can be crowded early in the evenings, with conversations often at high volume! Live music occasionally, on Saturday nights.

The original parts of the pub clearly are old, there are later extensions and an extensive terrace and decking area at the rear.

About a mile from Junction 20 of the M25/A41, it's a convenient pub.

The Royal Oak, Borough

A marvellous pub. Splendid beers; excellent service.

The Market Porter, Borough

I've been a regular visitor to the Market Porter, ever since moving south from East Yorkshire, about 3 years ago. On each occasion the beer has been first class (both in range and quality) and the service very good.

But, if you're having a pub to pub stroll in SE1, don't forget to visit the splendid Royal Oak (a Harvey's pub), on Tabard Street.
