The Black Lion, Hammersmith

Decent enough but laughably overpriced pub near (but not on) the river.

I used to like this place for being a bit quieter than the other riverside pubs, but after being charged 2.40 for a blackcurrant & soda (= fizzy water) and 10.50 + 15% service (since when does one pay service in a pub?) for a fairly ordinary burger we won't be returning.

'A little bit of posh by the river' practically says 'average quality but overpriced' so we should have guessed.

The Windsor Castle, Kensington

Slightly self-conscious in its authentic tweeness and crowded such that it's often hard to get a seat, but still a nice pub and well worth a visit.

Red Lion, Ealing

The best pub in Ealing - spacious but cosy, with very decent beer, alright food and a good atmostphere aided by the photographic reminders of its cinematic past.

The North Star, Ealing

Has a fair bit of atmosphere and an ok selection of beers. Trouble is it's forever packed and noisy in the evenings, but not bad as a meeting place for a saturday morning. Certainly a better choice than the Townhouse across the road.

The Redback, Acton

Surely the most famous pub in London for Australians and like-minded backpacker-types. Everyone else steer well clear.

The Spinning Wheel, Northfields

A truly awful place. The landlord is obnoxious - obsessed with money and treats his customers like low-grade cattle. There are plenty of decent pubs around, don't think that because this one has bouncers on the door that that makes it a privelege to be let in.

The Duke of Hamilton, Hampstead

Most of the decent pubs in Hampstead having closed or gone downhill in the last few years. With an eclectic mix of locals and superb beer this is the best of the remainder by a mile.
