The Moat House, Taunton

Thought I'd give it a second chance, so called in for lunch earlier in the week, it doesn't bode well that they can't spell Caesar Salad ..... still a very unfriendly welcome from hatchet face so we went around the corner to The Castle Inn, had a pleasant lunch, a couple of decent glasses of wine and friendly service.

The Rising Sun Inn, West Bagborough

Actually becoming a bit of a favourite of ours as we meander out to the Quantocks. Decent choice of ales, nice glass of wine and the food is jolly good too. Cosy little place and always quite busy, well done.

The Farmers Arms, Combe Florey

Great location and obviously fantastic if you're known. Otherwise you feel a bit like an alien walking through the door. Food was adequate, service quite good, would like to go back on a summers day to really reap the benefits.

The New Inn, Halse

Been a while since we've eaten there, quite disappointing. It used to be really full of locals and the food was good. Sadly not anymore.

The Racehorse Inn, Taunton

Possibly the only busy pub in the town on a week night?
Decent traditional boozer, lacks in quality and choice but what they do seems to go down well. Can't stand Tribute, (what is the obsession in Taunton when there are so many other decent ales?) But reverted to Guinness and as expected it was a decent pint.

Seems to have a good local following, landlady looked quite intimidating and seemed very abrupt but she'd had a few, so might call in again.

Shame they don't even do sandwiches or light snacks.

The Pitcher and Piano, Taunton

I can only ask 'why?'

Why such poor food?
Why such ignorant staff, infuriatingly disturbed by customers?
Why such a filthy state, damaged furniture and wasted potential of a great site?
Why go in to begin with? Why go back? Don't worry I won't!

The Castle Green Inn, Taunton

Despite the continuous scaffolding outside and badly hand written posters stuck in the window, I decided to call in.

Nice refurb, the place looked well set up and the staff seemed to know what they were doing, if a little too busy darting about with no customers.

Good wine selection, real ales tasted half decent and the bar man (possibly manager) seemed to know what he was talking about. Could be a really decent pub, but was almost empty except for a couple of odd bods seated nervously in corners. Asked if about opening hours, but they seem hampered by the hotel. Lacking atmosphere, but otherwise a decent start.

The Plough Inn, Taunton

Heard so much about this site thought I'd add my point of view and where better to start than here. The much talked about cider house.

Can see why it appeals to the eclectic clientel but not really my sort of place, bit too grungy and clearly anything goes, as the bar man was openly discussing with his mate when we popped in.

Not overly keen on the over hyped ale, bit too warm and unconditioned.

Popular place but not quite sure why, dirty, dingy but very much the in place to be if you like that sort of thing.
