The Taste of England, Thatcham

Went to this pub during the day (2/9/09) looks awful and has a notice saying it's shut until January for a refurb.

The Green Man, Denham

Went on Saturday night, so glad we'd booked. Staff really friendly and helpful. Service was very good for a crowded pub. Food was lovely, the biggest piece of cod and well cooked steaks. Will definitely go back.

The Horse and Groom, Writtle

It's a lovely old pub, and the staff were very pleasant, however the food lets it down. We had the most expensive meal (fillet steak) but got the least food. I thought the waiter was coming with the potatoes in a seperate dish, until Imy wife discovered four tiny potatoes hidden on the plate. I had a few chips, but it seems, looking around, that if you had a cheaper meal, you got twice the chips. The "superfood salad" brought the biggest laugh as it consists of 1/2 tomato and some green leaves.
Nobody came near enough to voice a complaint, perhaps they are wise enough not to ask. When we complained afterwards, they said head office is ordering them to make the meals even smaller. I'd like to see that, but as I'm not going back, I shall miss that treat.

The Cuckfield, Wanstead

Ordered Steak and fish and chips. the fish batter was dark brown because it had been fried a few times, although the fish did taste alright, however the steak was very hard to cut and impossible to to eat. We complained, and the waitress appeared to have a row with the cook(?) who refused to take it back. She offered another meal with the comment that "I had steak sandwich for lunch and couldn't get my teeth into it !" Having seen the cook(?) we asked for a refund and a free drink which we got.

The Alma Arms, Navestock

This is a Fawlty towers pub. Too cold to sit in conservatory, and most people had their coats on in the pub. You can't set up a tab, you can't use a card under 15, You can't use the special offer until 8.30 pm although the staff are standing around with nothing to do. you have to go to the right till to order, they give you a number which is then called out on the pa, like a station, then you have to go and get it. the food was like school dinners. I guess the pensioners/customers thought it good value.
