The Guy Earl of Warwick, Welling

Actually, having written the post below, my rating has to go up to a 6! Had a good chat with the barmaid and it turns out that they're making a good effort under new management.

The pub is going to be completely refurbished in the next couple of months and they've just started doing food again at both lunchtime and in the evenings.

They've even put a Wii in hooked up to one of the big plasma TVs.

It's not a great pub yet, but I think you've got to try and support your locals.

Alright, it's not a great pub, but at least they've got a good line of lagers and Courage Best and Bombadier available.

It is a little bare - needs a few more tables! But it's got a jukebox, a friendly barmaid and a darts board.

It's also clean and tidy - more than can be said for some places.

The Greenwich Union, Greenwich

Big fan of this place - really like the beer and the staff have always seemed polite, conversational and happy to help. As has been said above, it's an intelligent, liberal man's pub.

Food is a little expensive, but worth paying for - the surroundings are lovely.

Currently looking for a place to live in Greenwich town centre, and being close to the Union is a preferred option!!

The Garrick Arms, Trafalgar Square

A nice little pub. More expensive than the Chandos or Wetherspoons' opposite, but nice service and a good pint.

The Chandos, Trafalgar Square

Typical little Sam Smiths' pub, but unlike some very spacious and not a "locals" bar at all. It's a warm welcome and a great selection for very good prices - literally, less than 2 a pint.

Nice sofas and tables upstairs in the Opera Room. Highly recommended.

The Bear and Staff, Leicester Square

An excellent little pub - always a good selection of ales, and well kept at that. Anywhere you can find St Austell's Tribute is good in my book though!!

The staff are generally very nice (one particular blonde barmaid is very friendly at the mo) and the beer is good value.

My only complaint is that they won't let anyone sit upstairs with just a drink. For us business "pint and a laptop or newspaper" people, that's a downside.

Otherwise, the best watering hole that side of Leicester Square!!

The Toucan, Soho

My missus works above this little place for Debenhams. It doesn't seem to be used by their crowd, which is a bad sign, but I've been in there for a couple of drinks. All was fine, apart from being overpriced and the service not being particularly friendly.

Once, I didn't have time to be a patron, but expecting to be half recognised - or at least if not, treated respectfully - I simply asked "do you have a loo downstairs?", to which the reply was "what - are you a customer?".

I politely explained that I was a customer, and just because I didn't have a pint in my hand at the time didn't mean that I wasn't someone who'd be lining the inside of their till if they keep me sweet.

He gave me lip back so I told him to forget it. Haven't been back since.

Simply - for 3.70 a pint, you expect a smile and a chat. You'll not get either here. Waste of space.

Arch One Bar and Grill, Waterloo

Terrible bar, piss-poor Becks on offer at high prices. Music too loud to talk. Only worth going into when you're gagging for a last drink before the train at 4am.

This place could be so much better.

Sidcup Place, Sidcup

Lovely grounds and surroundings, and the food's fine but your usual Brewers' Fayre fodder. Only worth going on a weekday when they have two meals for a tenner offer.

Absolutely no good beers whatsoever, but a "great" selection of lagers if that's your thing.

Flying Dutchman, Hildenborough

Not sure when it was re-opened, but I get the impression it might have been done up a couple of years ago.

Good staff who are friendly and welcoming, limited range of food on the go (but a top idea in doing cooked-to-order pizzas all day), pool table, good enough music and good Harveys Sussex Best always on for a reasonable price.

Our regular out in the country - not always buzzing with people, but plenty of space for a game of pool or three!

The Three Chimneys, Biddenden

Really good little pub, very cosy and welcoming. Good service and excellent food, if a little on the expensive side.

Plenty of proper ale on the go behind the bar in distinctive kegs.

They've just built an extension onto the back of it to provide extra dining space, but well worth visiting just for a cosy drink next to the open fires.
