Mount Ambrose Inn, Mount Ambrose

This is one of the best pubs in Cornwall. Full marks from me. Cheap, no-nonsense, good beer, great people and a pool table.

The Oxo Tower Bar, Southbank

Shockingly poor.

I phoned up earlier this week as I was taking my wife out on a surprise night out in the area and I wanted to know (a)if they had a bar with river views and (b)if they had any live jazz (as was advertised on their website). I was told that they had both, when in actual fact, I found out on arrival, they had neither.

The bar area is actually at the back of the building, so affords a decent view of Stamford Street (ie. the arse end of SE1, ie. rubbish). Plus it has around the same kind of decor, atmosphere and general feel of a fairly low class airport lounge.

To be fair, the cocktails were superb, but also really stupidly overpriced - I suppose the idea is to appeal to the aspirational sheep who feel that being seen at such a 'top-notch Harvey Nicks type joint' is more important than good service, nice surroundings or not being lied to by the bar manager.

The food looked right poncy too. Never going back.

The Old Dairy, Finsbury Park

this is without a doubt one of the most awful pubs i have ever visited in London. having had family down for the evening we popped in for a last drink and asked for a 'long vodka'. after being quizzed by the barmaid on what this was and describing that it was vodka, lemonade, lime and angostura bitters i was told, quite sharply, 'we don't have that'. even after saying, 'well most bars have angostura bitters, even though i know its a bit of a random drink' (ie in an attempt at being friendly) i was told - even more sharply - 'i just said WE DON'T HAVE IT!'. so i gave up. and then i was short-served my order and had to remind the girl i had asked for 2 Leffe... the girl then shouted at me 'NO YOU ASKED FOR ONE!'. at which point i noticed the angostura bitters behind her. awful. awful. awful. a nice building, but if this is the level of service, then it really needs to be sorted out to save what could be a lovely pub.
