The Ma Boyles Oyster Bar, Liverpool

Ma Boyles is a real discovery. They are currently serving the most exquisite pint of Hanby All Seasons or Hanby Fruit Beer you are likely to taste for many a long while.

Get down there whilst its still on. Their beer puts other pub's offerings completely in the shade, specifically the Black Ship in the Cross Keys is truly vile.

Get to Ma Boyles before they sell out!

I was served a very poor pint of Cains Dark Mild here this week. I took it back to the Bar person who grudgingly exchanged it for a pint of 2008; they didn't pour it properly and told a colleague to 'top it up' after I waited for the drink to settle. OK, so the bar person was tired my point it however that the "Tiled Room" was full of international guests and I thought what a thoroughly poor customer/visitor experience for any of our guests to have experienced in the hands of Charmless Barperson of the Year. Put it this way: Charmless Barperson would be their written warning if they worked for me. Finally, the men's restroom still ranks as one of the most disgusting this side of Hades, it is still truly vile.

The White Star, Liverpool

Re The Scallies: I was once offered a box of maltesers, the said Scally wanted more than the shop he presumably borrowed them from would normally sell them for. Class!

On a more amusing note I overheard a barperson/maid ask her colleague what time it was. He replied and she then retorted "Good, 'cos that means in half an hour I'm going to chin you" Oh the wit! ;)

Welkin, Liverpool

Very pleasant surprise. The George Wright beers were great and at 3.60-ish for both, good value. Compared with 5.20 for two similar beers served at a hostelry associated with bread and insects, The Welkin offers good value. Would be nice if they cleaned the place up a bit though. When I visited there was food, serviettes and dirty tables a-plenty.

The Baltic Fleet, Liverpool

I rather like the Baltic's scruffiness! The beer is always wonderful stuff and there is such a cosmopolitan mix of people there: Polish lads having an after work pint, Dipped in aspic Form Studiers, a few Suits and lots of pre-concert Quaffers!

The New Inn, Cropton

I've never really rated this place, nor its ale either. Buying a few bottle of supposed Cropton beer from M&S recently was a big mistake. The beer was lousy, the cap had rust on its inside edge and I suspect the product was 'off'. Sounds like a place and product that might be trading on former glories and reputations past.

The Fly in the Loaf, Liverpool

Lets here it for the real pub landlord, Dominic. You always get a great beer here. Period. In over five years of visiting I have yet to have a 'bad pint'. Definitely sets the standard that other pubs, real ale servers or not, should aspire to. All hail to the ale, glasses to the bar please!

The Ship and Mitre, Liverpool

Despite numerous visits I've had very few pints here that have been top notch; think the last one was a few years ago.. a pint of Hydes Jekyll Gold I think.

Passing through the now familiar 'smoke veil' drawn across the entrance is not nice.

I do wish that the pub would just up its game a notch and serve its extensive range of beers better. A friend of mine was served a lamentable pint of Hawkshead last week, it was awful. With a little effort this pub could return to its former glories quite easily. As it stands, The Fly in the Loaf beats it for beers everytime.

The beer has much improved here of late. Although resembling a vasectomy clinic's waiting room its well worth a visit. Oh, the gent's is truly dreadful and reminiscent of boozers of yore, it smells, is dirty and the floors are often awash with....fill in the blank.

The Shrewsbury Arms, Oxton

Does 'Personal' work here?!

It is better since the smoking ban was introduced but has declined since the OBT opened.

PS Peggie is listening!

The Lion Tavern, Liverpool

Consistently goof beers here. The Yates' and Black Sheep were in excellent form last night - oh and the jackpot is up to 70 now!

Doctor Duncans, Liverpool

I'd say this is a poor example of a flagship pub. The beer is only ever 'ordinary' you can seldom get the famous Cain's Lager and I have not seen a guest beer here in many a month. Week in week out you will get an excellent pint at The Lion or The Fly. Why not here?

11 Oct 2006 10:13

The Ship and Mitre, Liverpool

Following a surprisingly vile pint of Hydes Jekyll Gold and lamentably horrid pint of Robinson's Cumbria ( both served by a completely charmless bar person) I'll be giving 'The Ship" a wide berth from now on. Thoughts of a pub resting on past glories and reputation spring to mind. Thankfully in Liverpool we have choice, and I choose to go elsewhere

The Salen Inn, Salen

A great place to stay, eat and take advantage of the surrounding sunart forest. I stayed here with a fellow hiker and really appreciated the hospitality - and the accomodation, brilliant hot shower after a day on the hills!

The Rambler Country House, Edale

..and of course 'Anonymous' is completely impartial and devoid of any personal and professional interest in this place. Just thought I might bring a further clarity for the benefit of all our posters.

16 Jul 2006 14:35

The Dispensary, Liverpool

Re previous posters comments concerning Australian beer. Granted the most well known Ozzy beers are uniformly dreadful. However, there is hope. Try a Boags Premium or a Coopers Sparkling Ale. They are delightful beers, akin to UK summer brews. Best of all you don't have to travel down under to get one. Both are available in Rigbys, not cheap though. Onya Mate!

The Shrewsbury Arms, Oxton

'almost an old git' : Sounds like you had a not disimilar experience to me! You are quite right to say that 20 years ago it was a nice place to be; you actually felt it was appropriate to observe Peggy's dress code. After my last visit I went home, took all my clothes off, put them outside the house and jumped in the shower to get rid of the smell of a thoroughly unpleasant and borderline disorderly pub. Try the Traveller's Rest, Storeton instead. Its still quite nice there and the beer is quite passable too

The Lion Tavern, Liverpool

Raise your glass to The Lion. A great pint of Youngs is to be had here and the 'lady behind the bar' in no way resembles the legendary Annie Walker! Well worth a visit

1 Jun 2006 16:48

The Shrewsbury Arms, Oxton

The demise of this once delightful pub is nothing short of spectacular. Not so many years ago, and we are not talking ancient history here, this pub was clean well stocked with good beers and frequented by seemingly 'decent' people; not disimilar to what it was under the legendary stewardship of the landlady Peggy.
How times do change. I paid my last visit to this pub last night. It was like being in a carpeted drinking shed. It was over crowded in terms of personal safety, the air was heavy with cigarette smoke, the customers were rowdy, bawdy, in varying states of drunkenness and the beer was lamentably poor. This one time Oxton haven is now a thoroughly unpleasant place to visit and appears to be sliding inexorably downwards. What a crying shame.

The Baltic Fleet, Liverpool

I like this pub! It is a real no nonsense pub selling the excellent Wapping Brewery beers. If you are into spotting C-list celebs then this is not the place for you. However, if you enjoy first class beers, and, like me, enjoy a good all day breakfast with a pint you really should visit. Its worth the walk from the Albert Frocks, sorry Docks!

24 May 2006 11:28

Thomas Rigby's, Liverpool

I rather think that Rigby's is overrated. Unlike its sister pub 'The Fly', it always feels dirty and untidy. The floor is frequently sticky and the toilets are grim indeed.

In mitigation the quality and selection of beers on offer is good, and apparently there is a smoke-free zone. Perhaps someone forgot to turn the air-filters off when I visited last.

If ever a pub was in need of a 'bloody good clean' it is this one. Nice beer, shame about the place!

24 May 2006 11:24

The Roscoe Head, Liverpool

The Roscoe has been refurbished and is even better than ever. Some fine Belhaven and Black Sheep to be had on my recent visit. Visit The Fly en route to here for a very pleasurable 'double'

9 May 2006 09:41

Doctor Duncans, Liverpool

After a third disappointing visit I shall probably call time on this once highly rated and iconic Liverpool pub. Its the beer you see! At one time you could be assured that a good selection of well-kept beers was to be had. Now, you'd be lucky to find one decent one. On recent visits the flagship Cains lager was 'sour, the Cains IPA flat and tasteless and the 'guest' Cains Victoria bitter was similarly flat and poorly kept. Suggestion: Clean your pipes and look after your beers. I'm not paying 2+ per pint for poor beer. If 'The Fly' can do it properly week in week out Dr. Duncans can do it too. Flagship Cains Pub? You're having a laugh - but not with my money you aint.

20 Jan 2006 12:19

The Old Nags Head, Edale

Marginally better than the 'place down the road' but could be so much better.
You've got your marketing completely wrong! Get it right and your customers will come. Oh and Cornish Scuppered Ale is poor stuff and can be bought for 1.00 bottle in the High Street!

A great place just waiting to happen.

18 Nov 2005 16:43

The Rambler Country House, Edale

Against my instincts I paid a visit to the Rambler and wished I hadn't bothered.
It is a 'Pub by Numbers' and decorated with what seems to be a hotch potch of leftovers from Beefeater type places. Quite horrid.
The Barperson who served me was ignorant, ill mannered, unwelcoming and quite unprofessional. It was all simply too much bother for him.

Comine this with some very average Grays and Cornish cask and you'll appreciate why the Edale carpark is marginally more welcoming.

A great location for a great pub/gastropub sadly wasted.

18 Nov 2005 16:37

The Rambler Country House, Edale

After reading the comments about this pub and the similar ones regarding a place not too far away, I think I'll change my plans for doing the Kinder plateau. Its not so long ago when a cracking pint of Sam Smiths was to be had nearby and a good pint of 80 shilling in the Rambler too!

On a positive note it seems as if this site is doing a good job in flagging up the best and worst of pubs and giving customers an informed choice.

14 Nov 2005 19:33

The Baltic Fleet, Liverpool

This really is a gem of a pub if you appreciate good ale brewed in situ. Although it is need of being 'restored to its former glory' in decorative terms, the beer and ambience are spot on. The Saturday morning 'full english' breakfast is great at 3.95; enjoy with a pint of Wapping bitter and the weekend is well underway!

1 Aug 2005 13:21

The Lamb and Flag, Covent Garden

Possibly the worst pint in London! A colleague and I were both thoroughly disappointed with this so called 'Traditional Pub' If poor service, poorly kept beer and a dirty interior are your thing then this is the place for you. Personally I will not visit again. Terrible!

21 Jun 2005 15:53

The Philharmonic, Liverpool

Despite looking rarther impressive I'm afraid it is a thumbs down for The Phil'
Following a vile pint of Black Sheep last night I've been sick as a dog all day. Similarly my colleague who had a pint of London Pride was also struck down with a stomach complaint. Thanks for that Phil'.

Clean your pipes out, get your cellar sorted and whilst you are at it give the place a clean, it looks and feels tired and unclean.

15 Apr 2005 19:18

The Fly in the Loaf, Liverpool

Great pub with well-kept real ales. Staff are professional and polite, one of whom is very 'easy on eye' but, I digress! If you enjoy a relatively smoke-free atmosphere, appreciate a wide selection of beers from around the world then give The Fly a try. They do food too!

Oh, the men's rest room is a disgrace.
