The Queens Head, Brighton

Walked in. I was the only customer. Asked if the deafening music could be turned down a bit. Barman said it 'wouldn't go any lower'! Walked out.

The Lighthouse, Battersea

Went there again a few weeks ago - even more expensive now. 8.40 for a large vodka and Coke! Never again!

Click on [image 2] to see the picture of thep ub this article actually refers to - the Blue Posts in Berwick Street. The one shown is one of the other 2 BPs in W1.

The Lighthouse, Battersea

This is a really nice pub, but it is possibly the most expensive in London! Their large spirits (admittedly with a free mixer) are an unbelievable 6.80! Just slightly less expensive than the Savoy!

The Roundhouse, Battersea

Very over-rated place. Noisy as hell, lighting brighter than Piccadilly Circus and indifferent and very expensive food including awful, soggy chips. Staff are over-friendly and severely lacking in service quality. Not a pleasant experience.

The Regent, Balham

Good night, but bar staff are very slow to serve despite not being that busy. They have a tendency to look straight through you! One actually spent about 10 minutes spooning mayonnaise into tiny pots while eyeing up all of us waiting to be served! That said, big up to the GM for turning the music down when asked! It was absolutely deafening. To have to yell to be heard by your friends is distinctly unpleasant.

The Angel On The Bridge, Henley-On-Thames

Outrageously expensive, very ordinary food. Appallingly slow service with not even an apology. Never again!

Sorry - meant to say I don't work for 'any' bar or pub.

Benjo1, no I don't work for another bar. I'm just a local who's been going to the Devo (as many of us call it) for over 20 years and am happy to see the old place smartened up. Although I'm in my late 50s, I'm no fan of scruffy pubs - sorry if the new refurb offends, but the majority of us are not CAMRA-style anoraks, just people looking for a good time in pleasant surroundings.

Choller21, it wasn't actually you I had in mind with my comment - I should have made that clear, so apologies.

Odd how "all these" naysaying posters registered on the site yesterday or today. I think it's all a bit obvious which other Balham pub(s) they are favouring!

Went to the preview of the new Devonshire last night. Absolutely superb! A really sympathetic refurbishment that has kept all the really nice elements of the old pub. I defy anyone not to like it - well done Youngs.

The refurb is happening now. Reopening is the first week of March.

Balham Bowls Club, Balham

No relevance. It's just that sometimes I prefer not to be identified when giving a bad comment - I am resonably well-known in the area. You'll find positive comments from me by name on many Balham pubs and bars but I just happen to have had two (out of two visits!) dreadful experiences at this grim, ghastly place.

To 'anonymous' - maybe the manager has changed, it was an aggressive male on my one visit.

This bar is perfect for those youngsters who don't mind being called 'mate' or 'pal' by staff of the same age in a noisy and antagonistic environment. Those of us with a few more miles on the clock have different requirements when it comes to customer service and comfort.

The Blue Posts, Soho

It's important not to get this pub muddled up with the other Blue Posts in Rupert Street. Picture 1 on this page is that pub - picture 2 is the correct one.

I've been goping to the Berwick Street Blue Posts for donkey's years and it's one of the best traditional pubs in the area. Bill McGrath is a great licensee.

The Hope, Wandsworth Common

Appalling service on a hot Sunday last week. The couple of staff on duty just couldn't cope - long queues at the bar, all glasses hot straight from the washer, grumpy staff attitude. All in all an awful experience - never again.

The Coach and Horses, Soho

Ignore the other ill-informed reviews and misinformed rumours about change of landlord. Norman will *never* sell the Coach - it's a Soho landmark. This is a traditional community pub, with terrific staff and an air that it's hard to find in a West End bar these days. Visit and enjoy.

The Seven Stars, Chancery Lane

Nathan, have only just noticed your comments. I found your staff anything but fun-loving - they were acid-tongued and singularly unpleasant. I have not been back to the pub because of it. One person's 'lip' is another's downright rudeness. And as a journalist, I can assure you that they were not 'expert in banter and repartee' - they were childish, rude and disrespectful.

The Hoop and Toy, South Kensington

Excellent experience, friendly service and great fun.

The Zetland Arms, South Kensington

Appallingly slow service last night and a rude, confrontational and threatening attitude from the staff when I dared to complain. I was refused access to a manager. We left and went to the Hoop and Toy around the corner where the experience was totally different. Fast service and friendly staff. I am sending a written complaint.
