The Rake, London Bridge

One of the best selections of Belgian and US beers in London. But...4.50 for a 355ml bottle of Sam Adams? Absolute disgrace. Its a relatively mainstream beer and there were other US beers priced considerably cheaperdespite being both stronger and more obscure ie. Flying Dog Pale and Sierra Nevada Torpedo.

Even the staff were surprised. The only explanation given was that Sam Adams is one of their best selling beers so they mark it up. Not good enough. Againcracking selection but being charged in excess of 7 for a pint of Sam Adams is not on.

The Cittie of Yorke, Holborn

Undoubtedly a beautiful pub stunning architecture. Sam Smiths pubs are usually quite strict about shutting up shop dead on closing time. This place is ridiculous though, at 11.20 on a Friday night, staff were walking around the front bar with smug grins on their faces and literally snatching drinks out of customer's hands!

I have never seen behaviour like this in a pub before. I appreciate that staff quite rightly want to get home after a long shift but there are ways of going about these things.

The Clarendon Arms, Kenilworth

My mistake. My memory of this place is that it is more very food orientated (good food though) - always felt like you were in the way if you were just in for a pint.

The City Arms, Coventry

Always understaffed. A poor Wetherspoons. Make of that what you will...

The Brewery Tap, Liverpool

As you would expect from a brewery tap, the beers are well kept.

Nice looking pub too - even if some of the wooden supports for the bar have been put in upside down.

Not as far from the city centre as people think, and definitely worth the short hike.

Doctor Duncans, Liverpool

Great beer, attractive surroundings and the food isn't bad either.

Can get a bit busy at the weekends but overall a fantastic Cains pub.

The Bear and Billet, Chester

Beautiful building and thoughtfully refurbished.

Great range of cask and bottled beers. Friendly stafff and fantastic food.

A welcome addition to Chester

The Albion Inn, Chester

Great food. The portions are epic in size! The beer is a little on the expensive side but you are always guaranteed a good pint.

A very traditional pub. Certainly worth a lunch-time visit.

The Royal Oak, Kenilworth

My favourite pub in Kenilworth by a long way. A real local's affair.

The landlord is a gent and he makes a genuine effort to maintain the quality of the cask ale.

Certainly there are more attractive pubs in Kenilworth but none match the Oak for its atmosphere and friendly welcome.

A real pub, full of real pub people.

The Clarendon Arms, Kenilworth

A hotel bar. Expensive, average (at best) beer on offer. Not terrible but not really worth a visit considering the quality pubs that are nearby.

The Old Bakery, Kenilworth

You can never quite convince yourself that you are in a pub and not a hotel bar. Having said that the atmosphere is convivial (if somewhat dominated by Dail Mail and Torygraph readers) and the beer is top class - particularly the TT Landlord.

A good place for a quiet drink at the start of the evening before perhaps moving on one of the more authentic pubs in the area.

The Famous Virgins and Castle, Kenilworth

A friendly pub with numerous cosy rooms - a good example of why pubs should not be gutted and left with a souless open-plan layout.

The quality of the beer has been known to vary considerably. They certainly don't serve the best pint in Kenilworth. However, this pub scores well in terms of aesthetics and atmosphere.

Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese, Fleet Street

Sam Smiths pub - so cheap but not to everyone's tastes. Incredible interior. It's almost possible to get lost in the warren of different rooms downstairs.

Inevitably, due to its location, it never feels like anybody considers it to be their local but it is usually lively enough.

Overall, a real gem of a pub.

Harp Inn, Little Neston

This is a wonderful little pub. Fantastic place to sit outside in the summer. Great range of cask ales. It is indeed quite expensive but not that much more than other pubs in the area (even though it is a small, relatively isolated pub, that doesn't have the turnover of its larger neighbours).

Highly recommended

Irby Mill, Greasby

One of the best real ale pubs on the Wirral. Huge selection of cask ales, served in friendly and cosy surroundings.

The Mill had arguably been going through a rough patch but it's under new management now and they seem to be doing a good job.

The Sir Richard Steele, Belsize Park

A really quirky pub. Well worth a visit just to see the incredible interior. Plenty has already been said about the tiolets. Alwasys good fun - especially when the regulars are on a bender.

The Enterprise, Chalk Farm

A really good friendly local. Great for a quiet afternoon drink. Can get a bit more 'Camden trendy' in the evening. Fantastic range of bottled beer. Just a shame that the only ale they serve is a very average Greene King IPA.

The Worlds End, Camden

A large, impersonal & unfriendly pub. It also has some of the most disgusting pub toilets in Camden

The Princess of Wales, Primrose Hill

The only authentic pub in Primrose Hill. Fantastic food, good beer, live jazz and interesting company. Highly recommended.
