Smithy's Wine Bar, Kings Cross

Very average food that is expensive.

And pushing 4 for a pint of Peroni???

Jay Cubed, Angel, Islington

Not bad at all.

It fails on its disgusting toilets that stink and often make the whole place smell of shit.

Other than the manky bogs and the stench that you're greeted with, it's ok.

Would have got a 7/10, but gets a 4/10 due to the nasty toilets.

The Castle, Angel, Islington

Nice and clean with an ok choice of lagers.

Very, very expensive though. 4.50 for a small glass of red wine that frankly wasn't nice isn't good.

Nothing to make me return.

Millstream, Hitchin

New management, same old rubbish.

Beer prices are more most London pubs - 3.10 for a Heineken is outrageous.

Food: awful. Before it changed hands I ordered lamb shank that came frozen. After the change I ordered ribs and they were again, frozen.

You really need to avoid this place. Devoid of atmosphere, very, very expensive and the food is microwaved crap. If they can't even warm the crap up they serve properly, then it's not a good start is it?

The only thing is has going for it is that it's never busy - but that's because it is the worst pub in the area.

The Angelic, Islington

A very nice pub. The toilets are wicked (in a good way!). They're like spooky dungeons with piped comedy soundtracks going on.

The booze, however, is very, very expensive.

Worth a visit as it's probably the nicest pub in the area, and the high prices keeps the less desirables out!

Three Compasses, Hornsey

This place is one of my locals and I must say it's improved so much since it opened.

The food's pretty good (poor choice menu), the beer's always well kept and not overly pricey and the mix of poeple it attracts is excellent.

It has picked up trade since it opened and is well worth a visit as it's always clean and apparently trouble-free.

Other than the bar man who refuses to speak (even a thank you, a please and just nods at the price on the til when you ask how much - he needs to be sacked!) the staff are all very good.

It would get a 9 but loses a mark because of the idiot who sometimes works there!

The Famous Royal Oak, Muswell Hill

It's alright in there. Off the beaten track so not full of the usual crowds you find on the Broadway. Much cheaper than the usual M Hill pub bar and much better.

The Famous Cock Tavern, Islington

Why anyone would choose to drink in this place is beyond me. You've got stacks of better pubs within a 10 minute walk. Walk down Upper Street and from The Garden down there are lots of better places. The Cock is not nice. Being next to a Tube Station it's not going to be!

The Woodman, Highgate

Bad, bad service. The building's ok, as is the beer, but the staff are simply terrible. Just how hard is serving drinks? Very hard, if you were to ask the staff in this place.

The Highgate Inn, Highgate

Back open again, but with a mega price increase for no apparent improvement!! 2.85 a pint where the Woodman (over the road) is some 20p+ cheaper!!

The Old Dairy, Finsbury Park

Up itself a bit. Which is a joke considering the dive of an area it's in. Very average with poor food. I've been in the place twice and both times witnessed people trying to steal other people's bags.

The Litten Tree, Tunbridge Wells

I went here on my 1st visit to T Wells. Walked in, had a quick look around whilst walking to the bar then decided against it and walked out. As I left there were 4 very drunk idiots fighting right outside.

What a dive. Full of chavs, all under 18. And the bouncers seem to think they're doing you a favour letting you in - what a joke!

DO NOT GO THERE - it's a shit hole of the highest order.

The Harringay Arms, Crouch End

The last real pub in this area.

It's well hidden by its plain frontage and plain inside.

Not frequented by the fashionable - its main attraction!

Worth a visit.

The Wishing Well, Crouch End

A good, proper local that's actually full of people that live nearby and doesn't charge 3 a pint.

27 Jan 2005 01:57

Monkey Nuts, Crouch End

Poor.

The food is ok, but heavily over-priced, and they have the cheek to add service on.

Drinks are, once again, very expensive and only bottled.

I'll never go back and I live around the corner.

Try the Hornsey Tavern or, if you must, the Queens. Crouch End is crap for pubs.

27 Jan 2005 01:54

The Lion Lounge, Crouch End

A bit scuffy with no service.

And with prices matching the West End it's not very good!

Was full of chavs last time I was there.

Devonshire House, Crouch End

Your usual All Bar One:

SHITE

27 Jan 2005 01:49

The Steam Passage, Islington

Your normal chain pub on Upper Street. Can't really say anything other than that:

Bland, but ok.

27 Jan 2005 01:31

The Lark in the Park, Islington

Not a bad pub but you need to get a taxi home as it's in a horrible area!

Beer's not bad and priced well.

27 Jan 2005 01:24

The Junction, Islington

Pretty fitting for the area. Once you've negotiated the beggars it's ok!

Rubbish staff, ok beer, expensive, but has an ok atmosphere.

Worth a visit if you're in the area - but only as a stop gap.

The Argyll Arms, Oxford Circus

It's actually alright in this place, considering its location.

I was forced to go there through meeting non-London living friens and found it quite bearable and not overly expensive.

If you must be in this vicinity then there are worse places to have a pint.

The Garden, Islington

For Upper Street, this place is quite good. The food is generally very good and really well priced - more gastro than many of the restaurants around there. A decent place to get drunk in. I agree with Annabella on the football front. If you wanna watch the beautiful game, find another place.
