The Fox, Pakenham

Dropped in a few weeks back for a quick pint and treated to a lovely drop of Sharp's "Doom Bar" as well as the usual IPA. Smashing log fire going in the corner and an all-round pleasant atmosphere to boot.

Looks to have plenty going on the way of evening and weekend entertainment - singers, bands etc. A landlord really trying to keep his pub at the heart of the community. Deserves support.

The Victoria, Thurston

This now seems to be under the ownership or management of a hilarious and convivial Spanish gentleman. The restaurant half is dedicated to the culinary delights of Iberia, complete with piped flamenco music.

The main bar is a see of red and yellow, with Spanish maps adorning the walls. Go there for a giggle or a bit of decent tapas but don't expect much real ale other than IPA or Abbot.

Quite bizarre.

The Office, Brighton

Good pub for the Thai Food - 2 courses for about a tenner, all freshly cooked in the clearly visible kitchen behind the bar. Sadly their only proper beer (Hardys) was off at 7 p.m. on a Saturday night, which left you with an uninspiring choice of cider, Carling or Guinness.

Also the Gents is ridiculously small.

The Basketmakers Arms, Brighton

Great little back-street pub with an old-fashioned homely feel to it. Recommended to me by a local mate and even though they called last orders as we walked in at 10.45 on a Sunday night, they held on for another 5 minutes to serve our slowcoach friends. Excellent service.

Good choice of 8 real ales - couple of Fullers, Butcombes, Gales etc - and the ones we tried were in decent nick. Also a bewlidering array of splendid single malts if you fancy a night-cap.

The Dove, Bury St Edmunds

Just great. Knowledgeable landlord serving proper beer in a pleasant old-fashioned pub atmosphere. 6 real ales from mostly local breweries like Woodfordes, Elgoods, City of Cambridge but I also had a lovely sample of "Coventry Climax" from the Burton Bridge Brewery in Staffs.

Pint prices (2.50-2.70) also lower than the 3+ which is the current average across the town.

Highly recommended. Will be returning on a regular basis.

The Griffin, Godshill

A decent place for the family to eat out as the portions are good, plus there's a good playground, maze and even a small football pitch to keep the kids amused. Food quality is OK but nothing special. They do serve the local Goddards beers on tap, which is a reasonably good pint, plus the usual range of lagers and ciders you would expect to find.

The Blacksmiths Arms, Newport

Superb views from the terrace across the Solent. Great service - friendly and efficient. Good food and a decent pint as well - Shepherd Neame or similar ilk. Definitely worth a visit.

Three Kings, Fornham All Saints

Food is hearty pub grub - baguettes, chips, bangers and mash etc. and not too badly priced around the 6-8 mark.
A decent pint of IPA and there's usually a couple of other brews available in good nick as well - Old Speckled Hen and Batemans when I visited today.
Certainly recommended for a good value alcoholic lunch - pleasant atmosphere, attentive staff.

The Victoria, Thurston

I'd like to give this pub a better score as it's changed hands recently and they seem to be giving it a go by offering more of the GK guest and seasonal beers alongside the usual IPA. However, the pint I had wasn't great.

Will go back again soon though as they deserve support.

The Fox and Hounds, Thurston

This pub is still going great guns and has just won the West Suffolk CAMRA pub of the Year AGAIN (third time in a row I think...)
Very friendly and usually busy.
There's always something new to try on the beer range and the Curry Night(Tuesdays) and Steak Night (Thursdays) are extremely popular.
Its almost worth visting just for the incredible display of beer pump nameplates pinned up around the walls of the main bar.
Highly recommended.

The Fox and Hounds, Bradfield St George

A pleasant village local with an interesting selection of real ales (from East Anglian breweries "Nethergate" and "Buffys" when we visited), as well as a full range of the local Aspall's bottled ciders.

The Queens Head, Bury St Edmunds

Yes it has a big telly and a quiz / fruit machine but this pub is just 200 yards from the Greene King brewery and has the marvellous nerve to serve not just Adnams but a couple of guest ales too - when we visited there were 2 crackers from the local Nethergate brewery in Clare. So impressed were we with 1 of these that we returned later in the evening to try it again. Thursday night at 10 p.m. and no sign of the oiks or idiots referred to by other reviewers...

The Rose and Crown, Stanton

They serve a decent pint of Adnams (Best and Broadside) and also stock the local Suffolk cider, Aspalls - thereafter it's your usual range of lagers (Stella etc.) The food is tremendous though. Big portions at reasonable prices. Although the top end main courses touch the 15 mark, there is plenty of choice at around 8-9, all freshly prepared and mostly using local produce. The pub itself has a restaurant area at the front, a main bar and a huge function room, which will comfortably take over 100 people. The landlord, Tom, has plans to do more functions, including live music. The outside patio has been refurbished to a very high standard and there are plans for a children's playground as well.

Great to see a village local back open and seemingly thriving - it was packed on the Friday night we visited.

The Beerhouse, Bury St Edmunds

This pub has closed down and replaced by a modern-looking place called "The Gaff" - haven't been in there so can't comment on whether any good or not...

The Forth Hotel, Newcastle

Vastly improved since the smoking ban came in. Agree that real ale anoraks might be a bit sniffy about the beer quality but there is also a decent range of continental bottled beers (Duvel, Kriek etc.)

Three Goats Heads, Oxford

Change from a tenner for 5 pints of bitter was most unexpected in the centre of Oxford - a passable pint of keg Sam Smiths. Atmosphere is pleasant enough, and the decor interesting, particularly down in the basement.
Perfect for a quick cheap pint but if you're after real ale, there's an embarrassment of riches in Oxford within walking distance of this place.

Harts Head Hotel, Giggleswick

Superb pub - a fine selection of real ales, including those from the Copper Dragon brewery in Skipton. Lovely village atmosphere and very welcoming to outside guests. Hosts and their excellent staff cannot do enough for you. Only stayed 2 nights - wish it had been longer...

The Fox and Hounds, Thurston

Proper village local and a genuine Free House - very refreshing in the heart of "Greene"land. Hosts are very welcoming and there is a fine regularly changing selection of 7 or 8 real ales from all over the country. This is CAMRA's Pub of the Year in this area for 2007. Very handy for the railway station.

The Fox Inn, Bury St Edmunds

Almost become a restaurant that serves beer rather than a genuine pub. That said, the food is great, the service is excellent, and the beer is better than decent - a good pint of IPA or Speckled Hen, and a changing rota of specials or guests (Ale Fresco and Olde Trip on the night I visited).
Worth seeking out, but if intending to eat (especially in the evening) you'd be advised to book.

Ye Olde One Bull, Bury St Edmunds

Had a lot of work done recently, but something of the character has been lost along the way. Pub is steeped in history but now has the feel of a chain about it.
Shame.
