The Brewers Arms, Lewes

good food, good service, good place. One of my favorites in the lewes (and surrounding area)

The John Harvey Tavern, Lewes

Good pub, good food. Good service. Good mix of people, alwats busy.

You wont find a better Harveys (I asked what their old ale was like, the person behind the bar directed my question at the chap sitting next to me at the bar, who turns out to be the head brewer or similar for Harveys!). Of course, pulled me a small sample as well (it turns out it was very drinable).

Dorset Arms, Lewes

Good pub. Friendly helpful staff, good food and nice suroundings. Has a slight (upmarket) chain feel to it, and there are times I feel I should be frequenting somewhere a little more 'local'ish but at the end of the day, often choose here for a good drink in a nice place. says it all.

The Rainbow, Lewes

Been here many times lunch time. Burger normally excellent, and chicken/bacon/avacardo panni has always been amazine (doesn't sound much, but always so well cooked).

However last time I was there it wasn't so good and the menu had been cut back.

The Juggs Arms, Kingston

This pub used to be fantastic. Brilliant old pub, brillant service, good wines, good beer and fantastic food. really perfect

It changed hands a couple of years a go. I have been back about every 6 months since, and each time dissapointed. Seems badly run, and most of the good staff are gone (which didn't seem suprising as the manager didn't seem to have a good rapour with the staff). Food is now slow, mediocre at best and often out of stock (and slow to update boards to reflect this). Service is ok, not a touch how it used to be (little things, you would order food from the food counter and they would gets any drinks you wanted and offer a tab, no problem at all, last time they seemed stressed when I asked for drinks and told me to queue up seperately), but still ok. Wine and beer both seem as good as before.

beer garden good. Food is fine, Harvester style. Family friendly.

The Roebuck Inn, Laughton

East Sussex. Known for being 'well to do' and slightly at the richer end of the counties of England. Why then does our search for decent pubs (mainly East, and a little north, or Lewes) turn up so few gems.

We've passed this one a thousand times and it always looks homely and just like a good country pub should do.

Step inside and we were transported to urban Essex. Girl behind bar was useless and not helpful, wine was warm, beer nothing special. A few locals ('locals' seems to draw images of greying farmers and countryfolk sipping their pint. This would be wrong, think young, think tracksuits)... where was I, oh yes, a few locals seemed to dominate the entire space from the bar outwards. but before i end...

Now, I'm not in to feng shui but there was something very wrong about this pub. The layout? the lighting? the table layout? don't know. Every table felt like it was sticking out like a sore thumb. The lighting was too bright and the fruit machines and quiz game machines didn't really fit in.

Couldn't get out quick enough (which was easy as the wine was undrinkable).

The Potters Arms, Lower Dicker

Well this is the first review. not much to say other than it is shut. Which, in fact, says it all.

Trevor Arms, Glynde

Can't really judge this pub without having food. Turned up on a wet saturday evening. This looks like a coutry pub in a quiet and pretty (and lets be frank, well off) villiage. So we were a little suprised inside. It was St Patricks night (or at least the weekend near to it), and looked a million dollars if cheap looking plastic lepricorns in every direction are your thing. Bar was small, just two tables, and not much standing space, which was mainly taken by men watching the football, one step removed from the nags head in only fools and horses (actuallys that's far too damming, look we are not talking sophisticated wine bar here). Have to say the St Patricks menu didn't get my appetite.

Will have to try the food in the summer, until then I'll leave judgement, but not on my list for a quiet drink.

The Plough, Plumpton Green

Went lunch time, good food though at good food prices. Starters were excellent (especially smoked salmon). Main course was good, well presented though the portions are not over the top (which in itself is fine, we didn't want a pile-it-high place) but, for example, the lamb had a fair bit of fat, not something to complain about with a large piece, so this was a little dissapointing. Perhaps food better in the evening?

On the whole, a good find, nice service food homemade. though have to say the Sussex Ox (near Polegate) and the snowdrop in lewes both do better food (from our one trip). Will return.

The Swan Inn, Falmer

old fashioned surroundings (one half pink flower curtains, the other half old wooden beams and benches), neon paper signs (90% about not smoking), the place could do with updating. But clean.

But this shouldn't let you put you off. For lunch, sandwiches are good (especially ham/gammon and salmon), so are the jacket potatoes. Good choice of beer (mainly German). good patio in a lovely old village (with the A27 running through the middle!)

Not somewhere to go for dinner or a good night out, but great for a lunch. Next to two unis, could do much more business if they tried.

The Sussex Ox, Milton Street

Hidden away down a tiny road, very good food, drink and service, landlord welcoming. In the summer the decking is in high demand (and lucky you if you manage to get a table!) but amazing views across the downs.
