Rose and Crown, South Petherton

Full range of Palmer's beers. Busy even on a midweek lunchtime in November. Excellent value meals. Well worth seeking out.

The Bell, Yeovil

Serious fire here a few days ago - looks it will be out of commission for a long time - however it seems there are plans to rebuild.

8 Jan 2013 20:58

Railway Hotel, Yeovil

Reopened in late November with new landlord. Enjoyed a couple of pints of Jenning's Christmas seasonal Redbreast here. Doombar was the other real ale on offer and in good nick. Unfortunately it was very quiet on a Saturday night with just the occasional local in for a drink. Worth a revisit.

15 Dec 2012 21:25

The Carpenters Arms, Chilthorne Domer

Nice to see this place re-opened. Seemed fairly busy here on a recent lunchtime visit. Food choice and quality was reasonable if a bit pricy. Friendly welcome from bar staff and a couple of locals who were in for a drink. Glastonbury Hedge Monkey and Doombar on handpump.

Secklow Hundred, Milton Keynes

Went to Milton Keynes the other day, so I don't need to go there again - found this modern Wetherspoons half way between all those shops and the railway station and enjoyed a reasonable pint of Hook Norton Double Stout while watching the world go by from the terrace so all was not wasted.

21 Oct 2012 20:44

The George Inn, Croscombe

Friendly village pub with a good range of well-kept real ales from local breweries, including a porter, Stocklinch Black Smock, and Cheddar Potholer both of which I enjoyed. Good choice of home cooked meals with an option of choosing large or small portions. Recommended.

21 Oct 2012 20:39

The Five Dials Inn, Ilminster

Nice bright, friendly pub, very drinkable Otter Bright, good value home cooked meals.

3 Sep 2012 22:02

The Royal Oak, Barrington

Haven't been here but just to point out that the photograph shows the Barrington Oak (formerly Royal Oak) pub in South Somerset (which has yet to have an entry in BITE)

29 Aug 2012 13:51

The White Hart Inn, Trudoxhill

Nice village pub which has a warm welcome and friendly locals. Cheddar Potholer was well-kept and very drinkable while there was good choice of reasonable priced meals (lunchtime). Worth a visit.

29 Aug 2012 13:36

The Yew Tree, Yeovil

Brief visit on way home from the Quicksilver Mail. The interior is just as depressing as I remembered from years ago (before La olivia) and the only beer, Yeovil Glory was only just about drinkeable. Only plus is the view from the terrace.

8 Aug 2012 16:18

The Kings Arms Inn, Thornford

We enjoyed a lovely lunchtime meal here and appreciated the friendly welcome. Excellent well kept Exmoor Gold so didn't try the others on offer. Wiil go back.

8 Aug 2012 15:57

Nags Head, Thornfalcon

Here again, but with grandchildren, so appreciated the good weather while they enjoyed using the play facilities away from the bars (not to disturb the punters) but close enough to the beer garden. Cotleigh's Golden Seahawk on tap was OK but switched to St Austell's Proper Job. The pub's exterior belies its 17th century beginnings. Food was fine and good value.

29 Jul 2012 22:43

The Crown and Victoria Inn, Tintinhull

Busy here on a sunny summer's afternoon, when it is a pleasure to sit out and enjoy the beer garden. Good range of ales (5) on offer. Enjoyed a couple of pints of Cotleigh's Owlympian. Food is very good, locally sourced, and not too expensive for the quality. Our group enjoyed the ribs.

29 Jul 2012 22:33

The Master Thatcher, Taunton

Enjoyed a lunchtime visit here - we were pleasantly surprised by good value meals available (I had the gammon). Well kept Palmer's 200 to go with it. Friendly staff. Will visit here again.

2 May 2012 16:00

The Cold Harbour, Blunsdon

A Chef and Brewer pub/restaurant which caters mainly to the Premier Inn next door. Three beers on tap, Courage Best, Box Steam Chuffin and Marstons Single Hop (which was OK'ish). Reasonable meals, pleasant staff, separate area put aside for drinkers and outside patio area for better weather.

24 Apr 2012 22:27

The Trigger Pond, Bucknell

The change of tenant / management means revised hours for the kitchen - disappointed to find no food available on last visit as (brewery managed) website advertises incorrect times. Although Wadworth have been advised, the information has still not been corrected. Best to check by phone.

20 Apr 2012 19:35

Brickfield Tavern, Folkestone

Operates mainly as a family style TableTable restaurant for the Premier Inn next door (handy for Eurotunnel) from where a large number of its clientele come. Adequate meals; Spitfire and 6X on handpump. Small bar area at one end caters for drinkers.

6 Apr 2012 14:15

The Royal Oak, Witney

Definitely a food oriented pub but clean and busy at lunchtime. Pricey but seems popular with diners. Usual range of Wadworth beers on handpump. Drinkers seem happy to remain in the bar area.

21 Feb 2012 17:37

The Ship Inn, Weymouth

First time in here since the makeover which I think has been well done, (including nice toilets). Mainly an eating establishment but seems drinkers are also welcome. We had a good value lunchtime meal at a table looking out to the harbour. Friendly staff in this Hall & Woodhouse pub. Badger and Tanglefoot on draught. Tanglefoot in reasonable nick.

17 Jan 2012 21:24

The White Hart, Sherborne

Good choice for lunchtime meal, especially the two course 6.95 menu - excellent value. Couple of decent pints of Tanglefoot to wash it down - other Hall & Woodhouse beers available, plus Stowford Press cider (half) for the driver. Friendly and welcoming staff. Will visit here again.

24 Nov 2011 16:40

The Masons Arms, Lower Odcombe

Lovely thatched pub - the thatch is currently being renewed - close to Yeovil but with a real village feel; there's a nice view from the car park across open countryside to the outskirts of Yeovil. Excellent, reasonably priced lunchtime meal accompanied by a couple of lovely pints of Winter's Tail - very moreish. Two other of the microbrewery beers available, including Odcombe Spring. Leaving by the side exit to the car park you can pop down the passageway and look through a window into the microbrewery.

1 Nov 2011 21:11

The Whole Hog, Malmesbury

Having decided against the Smoking Dog after last visit, the Whole Hog is a good choice. Good range of real ales on tap, mainly from local breweries (eg Pigswill from Stonehenge). Tried Ernest George from the new Welbeck Abbey brewery which was fine and went well with the reasonably priced menu - good chips. Looks to be popular for these reasons - good beer, good food and friendly welcome.

18 Oct 2011 22:17

The Cotswold Arms, Burford

Popular with visitors to picturesque Burford. Two Hook Norton beers Hooky Bitter and Old Hooky on tap (the Bitter was quickly taken off when a later customer returned his pint) but chose the White Horse Village Idiot which was OK'ish. Good range of snacks and meals on offer at lunchtime - bir pricey but this is Burford after all. Friendly staff here.

18 Oct 2011 22:08

The Trigger Pond, Bucknell

Haven't been here for a couple of years but still found a friendly welcome. Good range of Wadworths beers on tap; I chose the seasonal Malt and Hops which was just right. The food was excellent and well priced - will come here again the next time we're in Bicester.

18 Oct 2011 21:59

Castlebrook Inn, Somerton

Decent pint of St Austell Proper Job (although I'm not keen on the use of a sparkler - perhaps helps to attenuate such well hopped beers) with a reasonably priced meal at lunchtime - good chips. Doombar also available - it seems the guest beer is only on at the weekend. Farmhouse cider also available.

15 Oct 2011 22:41

The Fox Inn, Farthinghoe

Friendly staff at this recently refurbished pub. Three beers on tap from the Wells/Youngs range - Bombadier, Courage Directors and Youngs Bitter all in good condition - also noted Erdinger Weissbier on tap. Food was excellent on both evenings that we stayed here. Would happily visit here again.

19 Jul 2011 21:45

The Smoking Dog, Malmesbury

Sadly this pub seems to have become a bit rundown since earlier visits a few years ago, especially the gents toilets. Cotleigh Barn Owl on gravity was past its best so switched to the Rev. James which was OK. Otherwise Butcombe and Landlord available. Food OK but nothing special. Looks like it will be the Whole Hog next time we stop here.

19 Jul 2011 21:34

The Ring O'Bells, Ashcott

Not been here for a few years, but a trip to nearby Clarks Village was the excuse for a visit here - and it was well worth it. Tucked away in the upper part of the village it is well signposted from the main (A39) road. Excellent couple of pints of Skinner's Cornish Knocker (a bargain at the special price of 2) to go with a good quality (and substantial) meal. Also available were Codrington Codger (Cotswold Spring) and Topsail, (Bays Brewery) plus real cider from Orchard Pig. Friendly owner who is happy to chat. Will certainly return.

5 May 2011 22:14

The Two Brewers, Chigwell

Uninspiring choice of real ale, otherwise vastly overpriced food considering the quality. Probably suits its local punters but not for me.

9 Apr 2011 14:50

The Bridge on Wool, Wadebridge

Impressive building from the outside but seems quite gloomy inside. Through the back there is an enclosed garden / smoking area. Doombar, Old Speckled Hen and Betty Stogs on handpump. Tried the Betty Stogs which was in OK condition. Again another quiet place on a midweek lunchtime. Decent pub food on offer.

9 Apr 2011 10:08

Napoleon Inn, Boscastle

Quiet, even on a sunny April lunchtime probably due to its location away from the lower village and harbour (and tourists). Tribute and HSD on gravity plus Cornish Rattler cider. Tried the HSD which was in OK condition. Meals were well priced and we enjoyed eating out in the pub's beer garden which has good views over the surrounding countryside. If they knocked down the house the other side of the car park the view would be even better. The pub building itself is interesting and worth a look around.

9 Apr 2011 09:42

Woolpack, Hothfield Common

Stayed overnight next door (Premier Inn) and not wanting to travel out by car. Typical roadhouse chain restaurant/pub (Beefeater) - tried the SN Spitfire first; poorly kept, so next one was Wadworth 6X which wasn't much better. Food average.

27 Mar 2011 14:23

Ship Inn and Hotel, Gillingham

Roadside pub with large car park on other side of busy main road (A30). Long views over the surrounding Dorset countryside. Friendly welcome from behind the bar and a real open woodburning fire which is appreciated on a cold winter's day. Tried the Otter Ale which was fine, Cheddar Valley cider on draught. We chose meals from the printed menu which were well presented and very tasty - certainly as good as we remember from our last visit a couple of years ago.

8 Mar 2011 10:57

The Half Moon Inn, Stoke St Mary

Large village pub with flagstoned main bar seemingly way out in the countryside but still close to Taunton. Uninspiring choice of beers (Abbot, London Pride plus Butcombe) plus Ashton Press cider. Chose the Abbot which was fine to accompany what was a very good value, well prepared lunchtime carvery. Will call again in the summer to enjoy the views from the large garden.

8 Mar 2011 10:40

The Duke of Wellington, Minehead

Not our usual first choice when in Minehead, but a typical Weatherspoons, busy at lunchtime today (half-term?). Service was reasonably efficient, food quality not brilliant but at that price you can't really complain. Decent pint of Cottage Brewery Between the Posts. Thatchers Gold cider on draught.

24 Feb 2011 19:27

The Harbour Inn, Axmouth

Lunchtime visit , mainly for a meal. Reasonably priced meals with good cheerful table service. Real ales on offer were Badger Gold, Tanglefoot and Sussex plus the seasonal Pickled Partridge which I found to be really tasty and very drinkable. Stowford Press cider also on draught. Busy even on an early February weekday. The sign outside now says food is available all day.

8 Feb 2011 19:27

Canards Hotel, Shepton Mallet

As noted, lots of handpumps but only two real ales available when we called. Mid week so maybe more beers are on offer at the weekend? Tried the Palmers Dorset Gold which was up to standard. The draught perry from Broadoak weighed in at 7.5%, good stuff and very drinkable. Enjoyed the our meals also. Nice batter on the fish and the mash with the sausages was tasty. Interesting feature of the bar is the glass covered well.

4 Feb 2011 22:26

Nags Head, Thornfalcon

Plain exterior, but much better on the inside. Two beers on offer (Butcombe and Plastered Pheasant from Quantock Brewery) plus Thatchers cider. The lunchtime meal was good value and all the better for beng washed down with the tasty winter offering from Quantock.

27 Jan 2011 21:33

City Arms, Wells

Lunchtime visit. We had good value, tasty food from the blackboard menu plus a cuople of well kept pint(s) of Glastonbury Ales Ley Lines. Good selection of beers from west country breweries plus 3 ciders on offer. Friendly staff. Nice pub, will call again.

20 Jan 2011 15:24

The Quicksilver Mail, Yeovil

Not a regular, perhaps 5 or 6 times a year, here but always assured of a good welcome and a decent pint (or two) of Broadside (3.25) - in spite of the sign outside which reads 'Cold Food, Warm Beer, Grumpy Landlord' No sign of aforementioned barmaid.

26 Nov 2010 20:47

The Bell Inn, Whitchurch

Lovely, welcoming pub, with straighforward, simple lunchtime menu which was good value, esp. the cold roast beef. Enjoyed a pint of the guest beer - Russian Winter from Itchen Valley. Well kept and tasty. Worth the detour off the A303/M3. Handy public car par nearby.

21 Nov 2010 20:54

Half Moon Inn and Country Lodge, Mudford

Been several times to this popular pub and never disappointed. Not too busy this lunchtime but friendly welcome, food was good and plentiful, plus lovely pint of Pitchford to wash it all down.

17 Nov 2010 15:38

The Black Boy, Winchester

We called here (late Oct 2010) after reading reviews and we certainly weren't let down. Really friendly staff, good beer (Itchen Valley, Pure Gold) in good condition. Good value meals and you're never short of talking points as you look around. Got to be the best choice when in Winchester.

4 Nov 2010 19:22

The Saxon Arms, Stratton

Visited here a few times over the years so looked forward to a return. Nice, well laid out pub in a lovely Dorset village seems very popular judging by the number of diners on a midweek lunchtime. Timothy Taylor Landlord in average condition, but the visit was let down by a poor quality meal. New potatoes not properly prepared (bad bits not cut out) and no taste- tasted like yesterday's reheated, and a very chewy yorkshire pud. Won't be back again in a hurry.
