The Clifton Arms, Caversham

Having recently moved near to Caversham from Kent the pubs here are a breath of fresh air. Lovely little pub here . Met up with my daughter and son. Served by friendly landlady , even offered to make us lunch even though it has just gone past the 2pm finishing time. Excellent wine selection and my son said the Brakspear ale was in fine condition. Top marks , we will most certainly will make this our new local.

Alto Lounge, Reading

Waited for no less than ten minutes at the bar. Three staff saw us walk in but chose to ignore us leaving us waiting while a young chap with dirty ripped clothes was on the phone. It should have been obvious to the other 3 girls that he could not serve us but they decided to ignore us , carrying on with their chat . So after patiently waiting and examining the menu we still had nobody to serve us (despite instructions telling us to order at bar) so we just walked out , stared at by the 3 girls who just simply did not care. We found a lovely little cafe instead a few doors down on the corner and had a lovely lunch and coffees there instead. And that's where we shall go from now on.

The Black Lion, Longfield

I like this pub. I often pop in with my sister and our husbands.
Good selection of red wine.
Only gripes no toilet paper in the ladies and my sisters husband and two different ales, both stank and one had lots of little flies in the top.
Was changed to a perfectly drinkable bottle of Holsten pills and he sticks with that now when they have not run out.
Comfy furniture and nice and warm :-)

Railway Tavern, Longfield

NOT SURPRISED IT HAS CLOSED DOWN AGAIN. COULD BE A NICE PUB. BEEN THERE A FEW TIMES AS MY SISTER LIVES OPPOSITE AND BEEN LAZILY SERVED BY SOME YOUNG KID WITH CAPS ON AND TROUSERS AROUND THEIR ANKLES
THEY DON'T HAVE WINE GLASSES TO PUT WINE IN, NEVER HAVE HAD RED WINE AND THE ONLY HAD ROSE ONCE IN THE LAST THREE VISITS.
ALWAYS SCRUFFY BIG DOGS PASSING WIND IN THE PUB ALTHOUGH ILLITERATELY WORDED SIGNS EXCLAIM "NO DOGS ALOUD"(SIC)
BONUS IS I GET MY CAR WASHED EVERY TIME I VISIT MY SISTER AS THEY HAVE SOME ROMANIAN GYPSIES WASHING CARS IN THE CAR PARK.

D:Ream Bar, Gravesend

Absolute horseshit pit.

Terrible staff, walked in one afternoon with my husband and two colleagues and were totally ignored the TWO girls behind the bar , both too busy talking and mucking about putting a phone back together that had been dropped.
No amount of patient waiting or hints was going to get their attention so we left after a few minutes. You would think as nobody else was in their they would beeager to serve and take some money. Evidently not. Probably explains why in fact the pub is so dirty and in a state of disrepair.
They cannot even afford to buy light bulbs for the outside lights. Now I know why its so empty all the time. The owners and staff do not give a monkeys.

One to avoid at all costs.

Ascot Arms, Gravesend

Shame the pub is now closed. The last manager was brilliant and nothing was too much trouble in organising my mothers 60th birthday party earlier this year. She had a wonderful surprise party in the hall and the manager organised everything for us from the decorations and food to the DJ. The young lady working behind the bar was fantastic and very cheery yet professional.

I am told by many regulars of the pub in our circle of friends that simply the brewery refused to maintain the pub , leased it with the promise of fixing the broken heating and redecorating the pub & repairing the badly leaking roof so the owners decided not to continue with the offer of a new lease and not to continue paying extortionate rent , utilities , and beer from the brewery at highly inflate prices. And this seems to be a common story involving brewery owned pubs. Sadly it is a sign of the times that so many pubs are closing down, and most for good.
And as for the last comment by ralpiemalphie that the pub closed because of a police raid - well that is utter poppycock.
It is well known some cannabis plants were found in one of the letting rooms and was only discovered by the police after a violent attempted armed robbery.
The pub had already been closed by the owners the night before.
Had there been a raid and a pub closed down because of it I'm certain it would have been all over the local papers. Some people are so fickle and believe any street gossip. Entertaining nonetheless!
In all seriousness it will be a shame to see it be knocked down and turned into more housing, for over 40 years my family have frequented the pub and had many a doo's there over the years and it hasn't changed much in all that time.
I fondly remember as an under-age teenager purchasing cider from the off licence that used to be at the front.
