The Curlew, Bournemouth

Well we paid our annual visit to our local,we only live over the road, and despite it being a mid week lunchtime it was pretty busy.
The wife picked the only thing on the menu that was un-available,still despite the omens we stuck to our task, well we had walked all the way over there, and with her changed order we sat and watched the world go by,,,,,
My steak+fries were OK,nothing special but what do you expect from a place relying on Brake's version of haute cuisine,no it was the wifes fish that arrived with the wrong sauce that let the place down.
To be fair they offered her a free pud+coffee after explaining they were so busy the guy operating the micro-wave got confused.
Still despite the expected glitch the beer was grand just like an ale should be and at 2:90 a throw pretty good value.
I might even go over for the odd pint or three unless folk taking up a table just for a beer+a yap instead of eating is frowned upon then maybe i'll order a sarnie which looked pretty good as they passed by our table.

The Avon Causeway Inn, Hurn

Not been there for a while so when some friends asked us out for a bite to eat suggested The Causeway as its half way between us.
We arrived 7.50 Bank Holiday Saturday got some drinks and went out into the garden for a yap.At 8.20 ish refreshed our drinks and collected menus. As we were deciding on what to have a young waitress casually informed us that food was no longer being served as they had a function on and the kitchen couldnt cope with both.
There were no signs and nobody mentioned this fact as we collected both our drinks and menu's.
It was half eight on Saturday night for gods sake too late to find another pub for dinner so we settled for an Indian and very nice it was although they didnt serve real ale ho hum.
Dont think we shall try The Causeway again just in case their to busy to cook four meals on top of the crowded railway coach of "Special" customers.
Pity really as the food looked ok+the selection of ales seemed well kept.

The Horns, West Parley

Undergoing a refit at the moment

The Shah Of Persia, Poole

Apart from the dreaded"fries",try the layered spuds with garlic instead the food was pretty good.
Beer was also pretty good, feeling brave i tried a pint of Eldridge Popes,Summer Glory not bad at all.Other members of our party had Ringwood Best which was also ok.
Only one beef, aimed not just at the S OF P but pubs in general, poor range of diet drinks. My good lady is bored sxxxxxxxxs with diet coke.

The River Park Inn, West Parley

Sorry its now called Twenty on the River, close but no cigar, heard lots of rumours but no concrete facts has anybody tried it yet?

The Horns Inn, Colehill

This place has had a re-furb,good crowd, shame about the beer.Sussex Bitter was very poor and the Badger Best not much better. Most of the locals drinking Guinness which says it all really

Parley Sports And Social Club, Ferndown

Just been reclaimed by the members, now run by people with the clubs best interest in mind.
Usual suspects with regard to the Lagers+Cider.Courage Best+Guest ale changed every week.Guinness+Guest ale 2:20 to members.
Big telly,darts,pool etc.
Large seating area+good cheap food when kitchen is open,Chicken Curry+Rice 3:50

The Curlew, Bournemouth

It amazes me how popular this place is considering the locals avoid it like the plague, the drains were beginning to hum a bit last time i walked past, probably all the grease from the kitchen.
If you are mad enough to try this joint please dont park in Church Lane as its hard enough to get out as it is.

The Pony and Trap, Knowle Hill

Ate there Friday evening, the main courses were v'good but once again let down by the curse of eating out today. Is it me or does anyone else miss the humble chip,if i want "fries" i'll go to a burger bar!!
The sweets were a big dissapointment, very Brake Brothers.
The Butcombe was awfull so i risked a pint of Courage Best(crap at the best of times)within 20 seconds of being poured it looked like sherry,no head and no life in it at all.Keeping ale is not rocket science yet so few pubs seem to have a clue how to do it.
Well worth a visit if you dont mind "fries" and drink lager.

One final, final thing my wife said the loo's were a disgrace, filthy,no paper or soap

The Curlew, Bournemouth

This is our "Local",the good lady wife had had a bad day so i offered to take her out for a bite to eat."Where shall we go?,i can't be arsed to drive very far lets go over the road for our annual visit"
Oh dear,where shall i start!The beer was good"Ringwood Best"reasonably priced for a change.
As i don't get junk food at home i decided to indulge myself with the Cheese and Bacon Burger served with mixed salad and seasoned "Chips"
The sorry looking effort arrived and regret set in,the bap was good, what it contained was not,a sorry excuse for a burger a couple of rashers of bacon topped off with a Kraft cheese slice which refused to melt because the burger wasn't hot enough. The burger looked like it had been cooked yesterday.
The seasoned "Chips" were extruded fries in the "Mcdonalds stylie" thus xxxxxxx horrible.
My meal was bad enough then the wifes Cadjun Swordfish with seasoned potato wedges arrived,Cadjun means a little spicy in my book, but the fish was dry,and without a hint of any spice/seasoning whatsoever. The wedges looked like they had been cooked hours before and dinked, thus they were limp+soggy.
Unlike most other establishments nobody asked if our meal was "OK" maybe they have got fed up with the adverse comments.
Still it could have been worse the chap on the next table ordered at the same time as us and was still waiting when we left, they did give him a free drink though when he complained, but only a half i noticed.
One final point, just in case anyone from The Curlew reads this, fix the floorboards near the bar, your chair going up and down every time someone walks by gets on your nerves after a while.
Oh i forgot our next door neighbours were there as well, the first time for 4 years.Their comment"never again"

The Ship In Distress, Stanpit

Saw reviews on site and fancied fish for dinner,so gave it a try.
The food was very tasty, but for what you get is way overpriced!
Having spent the best part of 50 for plaice+chips,a pasta dish and two sweets, you shouldn't go home and have somthing to eat!!!!!
Good pint of Broadside mind

The Shoulder of Mutton, Bournemouth

This is a biased revue,i play darts for this pub.
In the 10 years i have played for and against this outfit i have never had a bad night in this "Proper"
pub.Being an ale drinker, and never i repeat never, having to send a bad pint back,is a testament to the landlord's beer keeping skills.
The fact that the pub runs 4 dart teams, gives a clue to how popular this place is,agreed they stare at strangers, the prices are through the roof, the footie is in arabic, they dont do food and the landlord couldn't possibly have another drink,"Oh alright then i'll have a Carling"makes it one of my favourite pubs in Bournemouth.
Long may it be compared to the Slaughtered Lamb,a pub where the head lasts the whole pint through!

The Double Locks, Exeter

I feel i must question the judgement of the Waggledance fan,it's like drinking the soft centre from a packet of Lockets cough sweets.
We went to the Grove in Exmouth a few years ago when it was launched, and they were giving away scratchcards with every pint to win a tee shirt.
I had six goes b4 i couldn't stand any more, and went back on the "proper"ale.

The Coventry Arms, Corfe Mullen

On our first visit,a quick stop, early evening meal on the way home from Devon, they fitted us in,but mine host made us feel most uncomfortable by staring at us because we had a couple of drinks after our meal.
This was made up by the good if over priced food!
Took the wife back tonight for our wedding anniversary
wish we had gone to Pizza Hut!!!!!!
Seated at a table sited between two doorways atthe centre of the pub.It was like eating in the hallway with constant traffic passing all the time.
The food was terrible, with Goose you could re-sole your shoes with, braised belly of pork,so dry it took two pints of ale to wash down, seated on a bed of mustard mash that took your breath away it was so strong.
Whilst the selection of ale is ok,for a non drinker,or someone diabetic the choice of water, sill or sparkling is not good enough for the prices they charge.
One final note when someone says the food was awfull it's usual for the head honcho to enquire what was wrong with it,not blank you like it,s your fault .
