The Station Bar, Glasgow

Very impressed with this pub the staff were friendly, efficient, and well turned out. The beer was excellent, even better it was within five minutes of our hotel. Premises were clean, all in all we will be going back!

The Brewery Bar, Castle Douglas

Within the confines of the brewery a one room bar which has a very good mix of clientele. Being the brewery tap, obviously, they usually serve Sulwath brews. However during town events and mini beer festivals guest ales and sometimes ciders are available. Allen Henderson the Managing Director and Jim Henderson the General Manager are often on hand, taking time out to chat to their customers. The bar staff, who are normally very busy, are unfailingly pleasant and efficient. If it can be called a drawback the place is usually packed, but this only attests to it's popularity!

The Oxford Bar, Edinburgh

Upretentious customary Scots bar & accopanying snug. A litlle featureless and clinical for my taste. Having been in some of the more ornate of Edinburgh's hostleries not overcome by the very plain decor. However the beer was very acceptable.

Kay's Bar, Edinburgh

Can only agree with all that's been said so far but must add that the food, not gourmet but old fashioned pub grub, was well cooked & the quantity was enormous particularly for the price. A very pleasant pub experience in a capital city, long may it prosper

The Howard Arms, Carlisle

It was a pleasure to spend money in this hostelry the beers were good the service was both first class and friendly. A proper boozer's pub with a plethora of small rooms definitely not rip the guts out & pack 'em in. Well done to the licencee & staff made a good experiece great!

The Kings Head Inn, Carlisle

Have to agree with pour1malt, the pints were scandalously low 10% head, asking they be topped up Iwas told that their regulars didn't complain. Well I'm afraid I did, the barmaid topped them up with very bad grace. If this had been a pint of milk or a gallon of petrol weights & measures would have been down on them like a ton of bricks. To be fair however the beer, Yates bitter, was in superb nick but allin all I'll spend my hard earned pesion elsewhere.

The New Bazaar, Dumfries

Agree with most of the comments posted here, malts is exceeding fine some of the clientele are distinctly anglophobic. Also it can become a little raucous at weekends particularly during the football season. Having said that it's saving grace is that it serves good beer from cheery barmaids. The gantry of malts is quite outstanding. It has a seated covered smoking area out back. Overall somewhere I drink in fairly frequently and enjoy.

Robert The Bruce, Dumfries

This pub has been through several incarnations some of them were dire, BUT it's looking up with Martin as manager. Having said that I agree with several of the other poster's comments regarding the staffing levels. Particularly in regards to times when a lot of meals are being served, bar staff having to serve the diners as well as the drinkers. I find the bar staff friendly and can only wish company, not local, managment can be persuaded that timely service will be an asset in retainining customers especially durin recession.

The Cavens Arms, Dumfries

Food is excellent, real ales are well kept. The staff are polite & friendly & service is always timely. My only "grouse" is that it is nearly always stowed out,BUTwith the food being so good it's not that surprising. For regulars it is the Dumfries equivalent of Cheers, a really frindly crowd, you can always find someone you know to have crack with. All in all the best pub in the area

The Prince of Wales, Aberdeen

One of the best pubs in the city ale is usually spot on, grub is basic but tasty. Very good mix of people, can be slightly boisterous at times but happy with it.

Archibald Simpson, Aberdeen

Building & interior are something special plasterwork is remarkable. Food is average Wetherspoons & the beer can be quite good BUT the staff training is abyssmal. Not that they're not pleasant but some of the bar staff can't even recognise when a barrel has gone off. Several times I was offered vinegar. Get the training in place to serve a good pint and this would be an exceeding good pub.

The Horseshoe Bar, Glasgow

As one or two of the posts try to go here whenever I'm in Glasgow. Very convenient for Central Station. I have to say that I'd prefer a changing range of beers. Forebye that a splendid place to, either sit contemplating your navel, or get involved in some craic. Food whilst not being cordon bleu is good, wholesome, and cheap.

Crown Posada, Newcastle

Combined a visit to the Baltic mill with a trip to this pub, it is a splendid hostelry. The beers were in top form, the service was both pleasant and efficient. A real old fashioned feel to the place. All in all a perfect boozing experience.

The Waverly Bar, Dumfries

This place now boasts real ale, alterating between the Sulwath ""Criffel" & "The Grace". Plans are afoot to install a second pump, beer as yet undecided, so good on 'em!

The Laurie Arms, Haugh of Urr

I have to agree with the former contributors, but would class the food somewhat better than decent - first time I've eaten a cooked avocado.
