The Green Man, Sandridge

Popped in this weekend for a swift couple. Beer well kept and made to feel welcome by the landlord. Would recommend.

The Brocket Arms, Ayot St. Lawrence

Avoid...

Popped over from St Albans for an afternoon beer and wished we hadn't bothered. On entering we were confronted with a relatively quiet bar with 5 or 6 regulars gathered round. The barmaid didn't even acknowledge us as we waited to be served and carried on nattering to the locals. We couldn't get near the bar as they were crowding it. While waiting one of them ordered a beer to which she duly poured, still ignoring us. Another couple of locals rolled in the door and she swiftly moved on to serve them next. Feeling most unwelcome we headed for the exit and took our business elsewhere.

The Crooked Billet, Colney Heath

Went here for a meal today and can only say good things about this place. We were made to feel very very welcome, beer choice was great with four real ales on which were delicious! Lunch was top notch with hearty portions and perfectly cooked. I even had pudding as it looked os nice and this went down perfectly. Will definitely return.

The Plough, Tyttenhanger

A great pub and try to pop along on a reasonably regular basis. The beer is well kept and the food (when Carl the chef is working) is great - massive portions and great home cooked food.

But...

What a let down when the chef is on holiday. The food recently was barely fit for human consumption. I'm sure a temporary chef could have been installed as cover rather than serve the dross that was put in front of us recently.

A supurb pub in a lovely quiet village overlooking fields. Just don't eat the food when the chef is away!
