The Crown, Covent Garden

The long standing previous owner here who retired some nine years ago, was in my opinion the rudest (and most hilariously droll) landlord in London.
Forget the other famously rude one at the Coach And Horses. Gabbi was awful.Far worse.
The bar stools were chained to the floor and you had to sign a little book to be given the key for the gents..... He would bar you for life for the smallest infringement of his 'rules'

So, nearly a decade later I meet my old mate Covent Garden Dave here for a pint, only to discover that the tradition continues - infact has been bettered!

What an arrogant old runt the present incumbent is.
I think that they must do a finishing school especially for the staff at this establishment.
PISS POOR BEER TOO.........
AVOID THIS PUB.

The Beachy Head, Eastbourne

A ghastly, formulaic warehouse.
If you are thinking of taking that final walk of destiny - (cliffs are just over the road) then this would potentially spur you on to make it...
Like a Wetherspoons, only worse.

The Cricketers, Brighton

Had some Broadside here with an old work colleague recently.
This remains a super, quirky old place.
Highly recomended, though the guvnor is a little direct, even for my taste....

The Coopers Cask, Brighton

This remains a super little boozer.
I used to work nearby and this was my annex.
Wonderful Harveys in an intimate environment.

The St James Tavern, Brighton

Was there a week ago.
Beer (Hogs back) was very well kept and the place has, thankfully, kept all of its old friendliness and atmosphere.
The loos are now immaculate and therefore seem alittle out of place!
Great pub.

The Welcome Stranger, St Leonards on Sea

I HATE football, so made the elementary error of entering this premises during a match some weeks ago to get a bite to eat.
Completely rammed with Chelsea shirt wearing louts all lagered up and mouthing off to each other at double decibel levels about the opposition.

This pub is locally famed for its cheap meals. They are cheap, but all come out of an industrial sized microwave ( I would imagine )... awful.

I ended up drinking Guinness, due to a lack of real ales.
However, lager is the drink of choice here.

Railway, St Leonards on Sea

Great little pub this one, though no doubt an acquired taste.
It occupies a V shaped site almost opposite Warrior Square station.
I use it for my final drink if I have to catch the Brighton flyer and always manage to overhear some gem from one of the decaying locals.
Last week two of them were discussing the best way to do away with Hazel Blears.... The agreed 'final' solution was to vacuum pack her and sell her off in portions in the local Lidyls! Great..

The Royal Hotel, St Leonards on Sea

I completely concur with zagreb on this one.
This ranks amongst the worst pubs that I have ever had the misfortune to enter.
Putrid beer, microwaved food and noxious loos.
There is usually a crowd of feral, chav types lingering in the entrance - every other word is foul and there is a general air of menace. I have seen numerous fights here in the last six months or so.
Why don't the owners do something to deal with this behaviour - it is the first thing that the unfortunate visitor to St Leonards sees upon leaving their train at the station opposite.
VILE........

Prince of Wales, St Leonards on Sea

God knows how this one is still going in the present climate, but good luck to it.
They tried to tart it up about two years ago, but it is really looking pretty seedy again now.

The Duke, St Leonards on Sea

Perfectly decent little 'locals' boozer, a friendly welcome and one of the few remaining pubs that is still divided in two with a cozy room out in the back.

Bar Diva, St Leonards On Sea

Avoid at all costs, excrebal.

The William the Conqueror, Rye Harbour

I like this place - in a tatty, run down sort of a way.
It is the ideal antidote to some of the Abigails Party type establishments (in Rye proper), that cater for the pink polo shirted and grey slip on shoe brigade who take the place over on summer weekends.

Long may its shabbiness continue.

The Inkerman Arms, Rye Harbour

A pub frequented by the local caravan site clientele.
Hilarious if you want to hear the latest views on this years 'must have' 2 berth MDF hell with drive in Lav and flat screen 999 inch telly.
Food is O.K and portions are good, though I prefer the more rough and ready raffishness available at the William the Konk just up the road.

Cinque Port Arms, Rye

I completely agree with the comments below made by Strongers.
I was in here on Saturday just as the Derby was about to start and witnessed some racist comments and general loutishness which went unchallenged by staff.
This is a shame because the beer is actually quite well kept and obviously turned over at a good old lick.
I jumped straight on the 'Hastings Flier' at the nearby railway station and made good my escape.

The Ypres Castle Inn, Rye

Went there with a friend two Saturdays ago.
The landlord has to rank amongst the most unfriendly and unpleasant characters that I have ever come accross. He patrolled his characterless space like an autistic darlek and shot sour glances at anyone with the temerity to have entered his dreadful inn.
The main bar area was bereft of tables leaving us to sit in limbo on the banquettes attached to the walls.... just plain odd. A gent walked in just after we had arrived - clocked the table famine and said ' what? Is it breakdancing night' . This was met with stoney silence from our jovial host.
When we tried to move to an area in which we could actually place our drinks on a surface we were informed that this was only available for those people who were eating.
There was nobody eating there and the room was empty.
What a shame that what was once such a cozy old school pub should be ruined by a socially inept arrogant guvnor.
AVOID AT ALL COSTS.

The Red Lion, Snargate

Thank God for your marvelous pub Doris .. forever the best hostelry in the World as far as I am concerned. Long may you reign.

The Rooms Cafe Bar, St Leonards on Sea

This place won't be here for much longer I would imagine.
Full of wannabe, third rate musician/artistic/poetic/ 40 plus types, potted off their tits bigging up the St Leonards 'scene'and doing their 'thing' on the open michrophonnneeeeeee.... Yahh ..
No other pub or venue would put up with their third rate crap and pretentious bollox, though the whole thing is part of a mediocre, self perpetuating cycle and thus there may be some life left in the beast yet.. go safely there explorer!

Ye Old Mitre, Holborn

I had my 21st birthday party here long ago and I am pleased to say that it is largely unchanged.
I use this as my local when up in London. It is (to me) everything that a proper pub should be - great beer and well hidden from the ever present tourists.

The Royal Standard, Hastings

I love this place, one of the few that has not been buggered up or turned into a bistro by the 'down from London' crew.
Be afraid though.... they are working their 'magic' all the way down George street at the moment and this place could be invaded by leatherette sofas and ambient muzak in the not too distant.
I am not a great fan of Shepherd Neame beer on the whole, but have never had a bad one here.

14 Sep 2008 17:41

The John Logie Baird, Hastings

If you make the grave mistake of entering this warehouse on a Friday night , do so at your peril.
It was full of either the local fifty something .. get arseholed for a fiver crowd, or their nebulous tracksuit wearing offspring doing the same (before going to 'FLUID' or the club over the road at closing time).
Go to a real pub, not a converted Woolworths or whatever this was in its previous life. Like the departure lounge pubs at Gatwick .. Nuf said?

14 Sep 2008 17:25

The Dolphin Inn, Hastings

A lovely, unpretentious boozer in a great seafront.. ish location. Good beer too.

14 Sep 2008 17:14

The Cutter, Hastings

A truly excreble little hole, no redeaming features whatsoever. Avoid this one at all costs.

14 Sep 2008 17:11

The Clown, Hastings

A jewel in this stretch of the Hastings Riviera.
What a find, superb champagne cocktails and canapes served with old fashioned pre war deference.
Far better pre smoking ban though, like the boozer in Get Carter on acid, wonderful and long may it live.

14 Sep 2008 17:08

The Harrow, Hastings

The worst pub in Hastings? well, obviously, there is fierce competition in this category.
However, I am pleased to say that in my opinion this one probably wins by a furlong in its sub Weatherspoon lack of atmosphere and freshly microwaved 'fare'.
Avoid this like a syphilitic grannies' stump.
Truly awful, for hard core entrenched self harmers only.

14 Sep 2008 17:02

The Hastings Arms, Hastings

This is an o.k. pub now and a refreshing antidote to the awfulness that is the Dragon bar opposite, (although it appears at times to be the annex).
If you are a 16 year old indie type trying to be acheingly hip, then go to the Dragon wearing an arsey hat and 'mingle'... PUKE.

14 Sep 2008 16:54

The Horse and Groom, St Leonards on Sea

This is my local and by far the best pub in St Leonards and most of Hastings for that matter.
A proper old school, unreconstructed boozer with a superbly kept cellar and friendly; often eccentric and knowledgeable regulars.
The Guvna, known as 'Rigsby', keeps a patrician, unpredictable and (as a result) often hilarious lid on proceedings.
More a club than a pub in some ways and one of a rapidly dying breed... The restaurant next door is well worth a detour too.

14 Sep 2008 16:35

The Standard Inn, Rye

Great, unpretentious local boozer with young friendly staff who seem to enjoy being there.
Beats most other pubs in Rye for its traditional atmosphere and lack of 'down from London' front that is ruining a lot of the other hostelries in this town.
Superb Harveys too!

14 Sep 2008 16:18

The George Inn, Rye

It is a pity that the new..ish owners of this Hotel did not spend any of their, (obviously large) refurbishment budget on the training of staff in basic cellarmanship.
I have been in about four times over the last month or so and on each occasion the real ales have been cloudy and vinegary in taste - especially the Harveys best.
Upon requesting a fresh pint of another beer this week, I was met with the old chestnut of 'noone else has complained about it'
Hard to contest when I was the only one in the bar... Nuff said?
The new owners of this 'boutique' hotel need to train their staff in customer service and stop charging top dollar for a sub standard product.
All stripped oak, lift muzak, dry white wine, smugness and zero atmosphere.
Go to the Standard down the hill for a decent pint without the 'attitude'and save 50p on a pint...
