Popped into the POW a couple of days ago; its extraordinary how few people turn up there in the evening. You can almost have the place to yourself it seems. But the beer is pleasant and the punters that do turn up are not too evil. Would not stay there the whole night, but could be fun on a crawl from Warrior Square northwards...

Another pub that which seems to survive with three people in it. I was there last week creating the same kind of hostile looks that the Americans got when walking into that pub in "An American Werewolf in London" and a couple of the local looked like they might have been part of the film. Having said that the beer, Courage was drinkable and the bar staff fairly friendly. Probably suffers from being close to Warrior Square. The four people in there all seemed to know one another and in the 20 mins it took to sup my pint they sold nothing and no one came in. Probably not on a St L pub crawl, but could be without too much worry.

God knows how this one is still going in the present climate, but good luck to it.
They tried to tart it up about two years ago, but it is really looking pretty seedy again now.

I went in just before christmas, and I was the only person in. I actually woke the bar staff up. She was having a little doze behind the bar.

Having critisied, the beer was actually very good.

Very old-fashioned pub, with a rather run-down exterior that makes you wonder as you approach whether it may be closed. The Courage Best wasn't too hot, but at least the place is still serving its local community.
