The Mill House Inn, Trebarwith

IF I WERE GEORGE ORWELL THIS WOULD BE MY 'MOON UNDER THE WATER'. VISITED ON THE 1ST APRIL AT THE TAIL END OF A TOURING TRIP TO CORNWALL. WARM WELCOME AND A LANDLORDS RECOMMENDATION FOR THE TINTAGEL CORNISH PRIDE. LOVELY PINT. UNFORTUNATELY COULD ONLY HAVE TWO AS I WAS DRIVING. ENJOYED A SUPER MEAL WITH MY WIFE. FRIENDLY SERVICE, GREAT QUALITY AND VALUE. PUT MANY OF THE HOSTELRIES WE HAVE VISITED TO SHAME. I'VE LIVED IN PUBS ALL MY LIFE AND BEEN A FREE TRADE LICENSEE FOR THIRTY YEARS AND IT'S NOT ALL THAT OFTEN THAT I STRONGLY ADVISE FRIENDS AND FAMILY TO VISIT A PLACE BUT I HAVE NO RESERVATIONS IN THE CASE OF THE MILL HOUSE. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK. YOU'RE A CREDIT TO THE COUNTY.

The Jolly Farmer, Bramley

Hello FredCarno,
I'd like to say nice to have met you. But I can't because I haven't met you. Which is strange as I was on duty at the Jolly Farmer from 11am today to 3pm. Perhaps you waited ages and ages while I was in the toilet or sorting the beers out down the cellar. Maybe I'll ask my mate Mike who I do the times crossword with every morning at opening time. Not a bad result today - took us less that twenty five minutes to complete . With no interuptions. Perhaps you'd like to drop your cloak of invisibility and pop along have have a chat about our standards of service. Mike and I are there first thing most mornings. The other thirteen diners and three drinkers who popped in over the course of our four hour long quiet lunchtime seemed most satisfied.
Kind Regards,

The West Hill, Brighton

Visited the West Hill on two recent sunday afternoon/evenings. The beer was excellent on both occasions (Tribute & Sussex Best). The pub was suggested by my daughter, a vegan, because it offers a carvery with a regular vegan option all day on sundays. The food was as good as the beer. Reasonably priced, good quality and served piping hot with a smile by the friendly staff. Different staff on both our visits. One young guy from Sussex uni and a young lady with dreads and tats. Both attentive, cheerful and assets to this pub. I was born into the business & have run a busy ale & food house for forty years. I would recommend the West Hill to any of my friends and have done so!

The Sun, Covent Garden

Stopped for a pre theatre drink before going to the National. The Greene King IPA would have been more at home in a fish and chip shop condiment tray. It tasted like vinegar. It wasn't the last pint out of the keg because I saw the barman sell several more. Completely undrinkable. Left it & ordered half of guinness. Got massively short measured. They obviously don't give toss here so avoid it like the plague. As a licensee of forty years standing I think I'm qualified to to determine a decent pint and a proper measure.

The Jolly Farmer, Bramley

I'm usually only rude and unfriendly to people I hope to never see again in this lifetime or in the Jolly.

The Jolly Farmer, Bramley

Let me see now, how long have I been at the 'Jolly'.....oh yes, 40 YEARS. Twenty five as landlord. Quite an achievement in these uncertain times I should think. I wonder how many 100,000 great pints, how many 10's of thousands great meals. How many thousands of bloody good nights out that totals up to. A fair few I should imagine. It's a funny thing, owning and running a pub for a VERY LONG TIME you tend to think of it as your home first and a pub second. Personally I don't want everyone I meet in my home and If I'm not particulary keen on you ...get over it, move on, get a life, don't waste your time bleating. Of course, maybe I quite like you but to my certain knowledge the only creatures who are permanently happy are some dogs and the permanent residents of some mental institutions. So if you want people to smile at you all day and say "Have a nice day sir" I suggest you move to California where for a few measly dollars you can bathe in a sea of bonhomie and "hail fellow well met" all of which I'm led to believe is entirely genuine. This isn't just a consumer equation. This is a life. The are few enough real pubs left, populated by real people. You are completely right my friend "Grumpy Farmer" is not for you. Might I suggest a local just down the road from us "The Endless Sunshine of the Vacant Smile." I sure it's exactly what you're looking for.

The Vernon Arms, Sudbury

After a recent trip to Alton Towers my family and our friends ( a group of four adults and five children ) chanced upon the Vernon Arms. We had arrived late looking for food and their kitchen had closed half an hour previously. The landlord helpfully tried to find us an alternative venue - without success. He then returned to his kitchen and prepared us a first class spread of a variety of well made, well filled, well garnished sandwiches complimented by some generous portions of scrumptious fries. His beer was excellent (Marstons Pedigree and Black Sheep Bitter) and his wife and staff were friendly, engaging and helpful. As a licensee myself I fully understand the pressures of the business, especially on a busy weekend night and can only recommend this hostelry to any traveler to the area. We shall definitely search it out when we return to this part of the country.
