Typical Greene King dross! Crap pub, bored staff, expensive microwave food. Why do all Greene King pubs want to be Wetherspoons? Shame could be a nice pub, has huge potential, but then again it's a Greene King pub, so any potential it has will be quashed. For an extra 2 mins walk you can go to Bedford Place for proper pubs like The Pensioners, The Red Lion and Th Alex.

Wow! Justin was true to his word and he has now got Sharps Doombar in and he is getting Wadworth 6X in for September. Seriously impressed with the new manager (Justin) after each barrel of Ale, regardless of how busy he is, he gives the line a quick clean, so that in his own words, the quality of the beer is constant. I know this should be standard practice, but it's rare to see a landlord so passionate about ale, and one who follows the correct procedure everytime, really does make a refreshing change. Additionally, the pub is clean and smells clean, Justin and his team are working very hard to turn this pub around, I thinkl he is the 1st Manager/landlord I have ever seen on his hands and knees cleaning skirting boards on a quiet afternoon!
I would urge you to pay this pub a visit, it really is turning around, and while there are cheaper pubs around the bedford place area, you won't get a better pint from any of the Red Lion's neighbours.

Under new management, and the change is visible as soon as you go in. New layout with Sofas by the bar, which proved popular on my visit. The New manager is called Justin and he was working with Hannah, a very nice bar tender. Both Justin and Hannah are experienced Pub/Bar Managers, and they were very keen to make everyone feel at home in the pub.
The pub was full of 20 somethings to 40 somethings enjoying shots, cocktails and beer. I had a Ringwood Best (only ale they had, although Justin assured me that Doombar would be available soon, with Ringwood, Pedigree and London Pride rotating as the Guest Ale in the near future), which was in excellent condition. I then had a shot of dubious name, but wow! it tastes amazing, butterscotch and baileys, I reccomend this to anyone who pays the Red Lion a visit.
It's pretty clear that Justin and his team are making changes, and turning this "Old Locals" pub into a more appealling "Circuit Bar" with something for everyone. I just hope they get the time to make their mark. I for one can't wait to go back next Saturday!

The Alexandra, Southampton
Along with The Red Lion in Bedford Place, this is my favourite pub in Southampton. Ales kept immacultely, particularly Timothy Taylor Landlord. Quite pricey, but then again, I'm happy to pay good money for a better than good pint!
