OK this one I think, for an estate pub, clean and friendly unlike some in the St Albans area.

I think a good pub, always a good atmosphere when I've visited, good beer, ticks the boxes for a place to visit when on a city centre crawl
18 Dec 2009 16:21
Good beer garden, good beer, not the friendliest staff though I've found. Food alright, I prefer the very local competition this pub has...
18 Dec 2009 16:19
Pretty, well completely, dead when we visited. Beer OK, food took forever, a shame as the building / location are good.
18 Dec 2009 16:16
Great building, I thought a shame it had turned to a wetherspoons but the selections of beer, and quality, was good when I last visited. Jury still out on this one for me. Judging by other comments I've been lucky not to visit at the weekend.

Visited before it closed down, I thought this was a good pub to spend a Sunday afternoon in, never had any problems with service, not that it matters now...
18 Dec 2009 16:12
Great pub, good beer and top notch food if you want to go for the not cheap menu.
18 Dec 2009 16:09
Not in St Albans, and despite being a chain pub it's alright, good selection of beer, and a really good beef burgers.
18 Dec 2009 16:08
Beer good, food OK, low marks as sitting in a beer garden full of dog crap, and having to watch the dog do more ruined things a bit!
18 Dec 2009 16:06
Thinks it's better than it is, food v pricey for what you get. Beer OK, unless you're passing, one to avoid.

The Slug and Lettuce, St Albans
No proper beer, one for Mum's with pushchairs after coke and food.
18 Dec 2009 16:03
Currently the best pub in St Albans for me. Great beer, huge tasty gut busting meals, good friendly atmosphere. Superb pub!

Savanna @ The Black Lion Inn , St Albans
Posh and expensive, aiming for the elitist crowd with money to burn
18 Dec 2009 15:59
Suffers from being so close to the six bells, but still a good pub, worth a visit.
18 Dec 2009 15:58
Good beer, and a good beer garden to sit in during the summer. Recommended.
18 Dec 2009 15:57
As below, a good pub, friendly, decent beer, plenty of space round the pool tables. Sport on the TV but not too loud. I'll be visiting again.
18 Dec 2009 15:56
Unexpected location for a great pub. Beer in good condition. Haven't tried the grub yet but the menu looked good. Good barmaid, cosy feel to the place. Try it out.
18 Dec 2009 13:51
Distinctly average, getting served is hard, beer isn't the best, there's a lot better nearby
18 Dec 2009 13:45
Great pub, good food, good beer, good service. Ticked all the boxes. Worth a visit.
18 Dec 2009 13:44
Studenty, overtly Irish - big place, good for if you're in a large gang looking to get fuelled up on larger. There's better within a short walk
18 Dec 2009 13:41
Beer good, and a decent selection, but the place always seems to be dead and devoid of any hint of atmosphere...
18 Dec 2009 13:33
A great pub to visit in the winter and sit by the fire. Good beer, I like this place

The King William IV, St Albans
Unspectacular chain pub, no reason to visit unless you happen to be outside and dying of thirst.
18 Dec 2009 13:30
This pub isn't just rough round the edges, it's rough left, right, centre and to the core. If you're looking for a fight, or the black market, etc - then head on in.
18 Dec 2009 13:28
Must have improved recently based on some of the older reviews. I got decent beer, service was good and friendly. Good atmosphere in the pub, I'll be back...
18 Dec 2009 13:25
Decent boozer, good beer, good for watching England footie matches in this one!
18 Dec 2009 13:24
Awesome country pub. Not cheap, and most people will have to drive to get to it, but besides that a fabulous pub. Surely the best beer garden in the area.

The Harvester (Ancient Briton), St Albans
It's efficent and does what it says on the tin, so to speak. Worth visiting if you're stuck for somewhere to take the kids out to eat...really stuck that is.
18 Dec 2009 13:08
Weird, what it this place trying to be. Whatever ithe aim is, it's failed. Disagree with the comment below about decent beer. If you're looking for real ale this place is poor. There's nothing to recommend this place by, avoid.

The Hare and Hounds, St Albans
I think this is a great pub, beer, food, open fires, garden, darts board, pool table - it's got it all. Definitely worth visiting.
18 Dec 2009 13:03
OK pub, a bit rough round the edges. Good location if you heading over the road for a curry, other than that the only real reason to visit this place will be if the cinema reopens...
18 Dec 2009 13:01
Excellent pub, top beer and food, good decor and all that. Definitely worth a visit.
18 Dec 2009 12:58
It's a pub that's trying hard to be good, but not quite there yet. Beer alright, but it's almost a sports bar the TVs are on so loud. Food OK, but took an age to arrive. Given the excellent competition very close by this one needs to try harder...
18 Dec 2009 12:55
Or The Snug as it now is as mentioned below...it's turned into, or trying to be, a trendy bar. No decent beer. If you're trying to score then that's the only possible reason to visit this place, and even then head elsewhere...
18 Dec 2009 12:50
Fantastic pub, really good beer, excellent food. Top beer garden and location when the sun is shining. Only problem is that it's very popular and busy.
18 Dec 2009 12:47
A strange, strange place. Comments below hit the mark. If you're under 60 and you want to feel young then head on in, unless you don't like being starred at for not being a regular. Beer was decent though and worth visiting just to see how different pubs can be.
18 Dec 2009 12:45
A disappointment, beer not quite there, food a poor quality microwave job. A shame as it feels like it could be really good. Worth a visit if only just to see the old photos on the walls.
18 Dec 2009 12:42
Decent old fashioned pub serving decent beer. Friendly place to visit, worth a visitif you're in Park Street
18 Dec 2009 12:39
The Duke of Marlborough, St Albans
Average pub, it's OK but there's better around. Beer OK, staff OK, a little rough round the edges but there's nothing wrong with that.
18 Dec 2009 12:38
Sports pub, worth a visit to watch something on the screens or have a game of pool. Not one to visit to get a crackin pint of ale.
18 Dec 2009 12:35
Good variety of beer but an old mans pub that had had any traces of life or atmosphere surgically removed when I visited. One to avoid.
18 Dec 2009 12:33
Traditional good old fashioned pub with a good selection of beer. Visit.
18 Dec 2009 12:03
The worst pub in St Albans? Probably. Shocking bad beer, only sup here if you genuinely want to have a dodgy pint that'll make you ill.
Agree with the comments below about poor staff. Just avoid this pub.

The Blacksmiths Arms, St Albans
Recently refurb, decent beer selection, more than one beer festival held on site recently. The beer choices were good, worth another visit.
18 Dec 2009 11:57
The Blackberry Jack, St Albans
No decent beer options, like a Harvester clone type pub with all the cheap food options.
18 Dec 2009 11:55
Reasonable pub, beer OK, food OK, but there's better close by
18 Dec 2009 11:52
Not a place to visit for real ale, but I got some fantastic German lagers that you don't usual find in UK pubs when I visited.
18 Dec 2009 11:51
More expensive bar than a decent pub. Still, decent confy sofas, decent food, papers available. Good for a lazy Sunday afternoon.
18 Dec 2009 11:48
The White Hart Tap, St Albans
Just had the misfortune of visiting this one again for some reason. Land lord was a complete ****, it must have been his time of the month or something. We definitely will not be visiting again. Avoid.
