The Railway Inn, Docking

Have to admit that the draw for us was that my friend is an old rail enthusiast, so a model train running around the bar had to be seen.

We weren't disappointed, the manager switched it on as soon as we asked about it.

Trains aside, the beer seemed well kept and it looks like a good locals pub. The food menu looked really good. A lot of different stuff from the usual fayre, but we hadn't planned to eat out that night and as we were on holiday, unfortunately have not had a chance to try it. Hope someone does and reports soon.

The Lord Nelson, Burnham Thorpe

My friend's Wherry was good and I had a bottle of the Nelson's blood, which I just had to try. My beer could have been a tad warmer, ideally, but it was a cold, crisp day outside and maybe that's why.

That said, I have to say how unexpectedly good all the food was (we four all had different meals and all were generous and tasty) and all served by charming barmaids.

very friendly.

The Three Horseshoes, Warham

This is wonderful. A step back in time and near some lovely walking. Woodforde's Wherry and Nelson's Revenge straight from the barrel and lovely hot home made soup.

Loved it. loved it. loved it

The Boot, Weymouth

Well, I reckon this pub is just about perfect and I'm certainly not a local. Chanced upon this after a rainy day visiting Portland Bill and the young lady behind the bar was really friendly and clearly enjoyed working there.

I took in some Canadian friends and they just love places like this, plenty of character, good range of beer (I was duty driver, so only one Ringwoods for me, grrrr...).

The Pork Pies were terrific value. Well presented and good quality.

The Wenlock Arms, Hoxton

Exactly the kind of pub that would make me want to move back to London. Great range of beers, a pork pie with real piccallili and I'm a happy man ! Just feels like a proper pub. Not up itself at all.

King Alfred Inn, Bridgwater

Very friendly (staff and locals !) , good beer and they have really got it together with the food. We have been over for Sunday lunch a few times now and the food is excellent value.

The Thorn Tree, Matlock

Ticks all the boxes in a great pub. Went with a big group for the "Pie Night" last Wednesday and were given a heads up to get there in time for opening at 5pm to bag a table as it's a fairly small pub. Wise advice as there was already a small queue building at ten to !
Had a couple of local Ruby ales as well as the ever steady landlord from T Taylor's. Busy...great atmosphere.

Red Lion, Birchover

Visited last week with a group of 8 and the Tap Room was just perfect for our muddy boots and rucksacks. We were made to feel most welcome, although there is a posher end of the pub as well.

Unlike the last reviewer, I did enjoy the Nine Ladies Ale and was inspired to hike and see the actual circle afterwards with a couple of pints inside me. Food here is mainly around £6-8 from the bar menu, but huge and tasty portions.

Devonshire Arms, Alfreton

Very handy for a stop just off Junction 28 of the MI as we were cutting across to Matlock. Friendly, a wonderful Sarah Hughes Dark Ruby and a great value sausage & onion sandwich to put any one of a number of cafes and fast food outlets to shame

Yarcombe Inn, Honiton

Had beer and lunch here after a run with the Hash House Harriers. Driving, so not much chance to go through the beers, but a very nice pint of Otter. It's a nice pub in a lovely village. When the rain stops, I imagine the walking is stunning around here. But back to the pub itself, the food we had was superb ! Had quite the best Chicken Sunday lunch I can remember. Not of the "basket" variety, but great value

The Red Lion, Turners Hill

Oh, this is a place to go if you like your Harvey's all right !

Thanks to a mix up on travelplans and the fact that the OS map doesn't show this pub, we only had time for the one, so I picked a Bonfire Boy as it was the seasonal, but I could have easily warmed to any one of four others.

Lovely pub.

The Crown, Old Oxted

They do a very friendly beer festival a couple of times a year and seem to get good local bands. Since moving to Oxted a couple of years ago I have had some good times here. Garden is big enough for a good atmosphere on a sunny day and for aforementioned beer festivals. Downstairs bar is a good place to watch the Rugby and the beer seems well kept

The Weighbridge, Nailsworth

They do a pie which is basically Xmas dinner in pastry. And it is magnificent ! Everything I have ever wanted in a pir. Friends had other pies and were equally wowed. Managed to get a few Uley's in and the quality was excellent

The Royal Oak, Crockham Hill

Have been playing Cricket all season here and have regularly adjourned post-match to commiserate each other and congratulate the opposition over a few pints of Westerham's finest. Beer garden now tidied up and the pub is very friendly.

The Woolpack, Slad

Full of Laurie Lee memorabilia but good beer and food to go with it. I remember Cider with Rosie well from school days and without really planning this, had a real pang of nostalgia in this lovely English pub - stunning views of the Valley to boot

The Lammastide Inn, Berkeley

Visited last week after a wander around the very interesting Purton Boat Graveyard. Good reviews in the CAMRA Guide so had high hopes about the beer (Butcombe on draught did not dissappoint) but the real impression was made by the food. Huge portions - really good value. Cheery service as well. All enough to motivate me to finally register to give this pub the praise it deserves.
