The White Swan, Wendover

Looks like they've dropped Fullers and gone to Shepherd Neame. Beer is the same price and still excellent although you'll be drinking Bishops Finger and Spitfire rather than ESB. They had another one as well, Whitstable Bay?

Cheapest beer in Wendover and always good. Doggie friendly too.

The White Lion, St Leonards

Spanish themed food. Food was very good. The paella is good value and arguably feeds three rather than two. Location is lovely, perfect if you want a walk in the Chilterns. Beer was good. Had Side Pocket on from the Tring Brewery just down the road when I was there and one from the Rebellion Brewery in Marlow.

The White Star Tavern, Southampton

Beer excellent. Was a choice of Ringwood or Tribute (St Austell brewery) when I was there.

Food was excellent too although you need all 3 courses to feel full - by which time it isn't cheap.

Seem to have some very pretty staff and clientele too which is always pleasant.

Highly recommended.

The Buckinghamshire Yeoman, Bedgrove

Seems to have picked up a bit recently. Usually a choice of a weaker ale (Greene King IPA) and a guest ale. Fridays are fairly lively; Thursday quiz is popular; Monday's free pool night seems to be attractive to younger people; probably the best place in town to watch the football.

So, picking up a little. Not sure about the food.

The King and Queen, Wendover

Popped in here the other Sunday for a roast. Food was cooked to perfection. Absolutely superb. Friendly service and atmosphere. Very much recommended.

The Village Gate, Wendover

Popped in here recently and was pleasantly surprised. Beer excellent although pub was empty. Staff seemed glad of someone to talk to! Worth a visit if you're wife's in Wyevale opposite!

The Red Lion Hotel, Wendover

Can't comment about the food, omlette or otherwise but the beer was good and the service efficient. Not the warmest atmosphere I've ever sampled but a pleasant place for a quiet pint with friends. Worth a visit.

Shoulder of Mutton, Wendover

Some good ales on, food passable and good value, irish coffees very good. Right next to the station handy for a lovely walk up to Coombe Hill monument either before or after (both?!) a decent pint. Definitely worth popping into if you're in the neighbourhood, especially now the Red Lion's gone downhill a bit.

Well, yet another change of management and certainly not for the better. It's russian roulette with the beer. The attitude seems to be: take it leave it, we don't give a f ... Some days it is passable; some days it has already passed on. Other than the football there isn't a lot left to recommend here now. What a waste.

8 Nov 2009 23:18

The Buckinghamshire Yeoman, Bedgrove

Almost forgot. The blackboards are in danger of going critical and forming a black-hole. I swear even the underside of the toilet seat has been painted black with a notice proclaiming "Fosters - 2 per pint" writtten on it. Of course, that could just be the infamous local sense of humour.

The Buckinghamshire Yeoman, Bedgrove

Well, popped in on my way home from work the other day and it appears there has been progress!

3 real ales available. Think they change each time a barrel runs out so looks promising. Obviously this isn't going to rival the Hop Pole or even the King's Head in town but if you're on the south-side of town you could do a lot worse than pull in for a pint.

So, there's decent beer again, plenty of entertainment and plenty of parking. That garners an extra point in my rating for sheer effort and a well done to the management. They're certainly doing their part. The free pool night certainly looks tempting with some decent ales to sup.

29 Dec 2008 13:17

The Buckinghamshire Yeoman, Bedgrove

A return visit and it appears they've decided to stick to what they know.

No ale in sight. No decent beer in sight, even the Staropramen has been replaced by Fosters. Pretty grim if you like a decent pint.

However, if you like to chuck your lager around while watching the footie then you've found your pub.

Alternatively, if you're a female and enjoy cheap plonk and a couple of prize plonkers to enjoy it with then step inside to claim your prize.

The King and Queen, Wendover

Popped in here the other day and had a roast. Very good. Food was nice, service was excellent, drinks were lovely.

The place is kept clean (toilets were spotless which is always a good sign) and the manager is a gent.

Following the demise of the Red Lion I'd have to recommend it.

14 Nov 2008 16:06

The Buckinghamshire Yeoman, Bedgrove

Well well. ANOTHER change of management here.

New manageress seems to be really making a go of this. She's like a whirlwind. Takes no-nonsense from her staff it seems and appears to run a tight ship, although still quite welcoming.

Never seen so many blackboards in my life. Wasn't sure if I was back at school or in the middle of a break-out session on some management training scheme.

Appears there're three cask ales on the way. Very welcome indeed although I wonder how long they'll last with the lager swilling football louts who keep the place solvent. Time will tell but I'm guessing the drains will drinking a lot of it!

Free pool all Monday night; 2 football games at once on big screens, it is all happening. Great idea to keep the chavs happy and should keep the lager flowing. Still, business is business and if it gets the place moving a little then it can only be welcome.

We will watch developments with interest!

14 Nov 2008 16:01

The Red Lion Hotel, Wendover

I popped back here following the change of management.

Yes, I noticed the parking meters but frankly I just ignored them. No one clamped me and if they had there's always the disk cutter in the boot.

The service was efficient, my drink was good but I have to say there was a coldness to the place. In my opinion a bar or hotel is for relaxing and feeling welcome and able to put aside your worries and spoil yourself for a few hours.

If you're heading out for a works do then maybe the Red Lion will suit you.

If you're a regular then you're probably looking for an informal support network of likewise minded individuals, busy blunting the harshness of the world with an alcoholic shield, or maybe just looking to tune out and get an break from it all. If so, then this probably isn't the place for you. Your money's welcome but you're in the way of the office party who are looking embarrassed, wearing paper hats and trying to ignore the 50 something boss's pass at the 16 year old secretary.

14 Nov 2008 15:55

Slug and Lettuce, Aylesbury

Nice enough when I went in here but VERY OVERPRICED.

Effectively it is Hogshead with sofas and 50% markup on all prices - should suit the classier birds from Aylesbury!

9 Oct 2008 19:53

The King and Queen, Wendover

I hadn't been in here in years but popped in while out for a stroll. Very pleasantly surprised. Clean, good service, full of people I hadn't seen in ages (which was a good thing in this instance!) and a lovely irish coffee.

One of the few decent pubs left in Wendover, unless the Red Lion really has turned itself round again.

9 Oct 2008 19:50

The Farmer's Bar, Aylesbury

Nice relaxed atmosphere and does have some nice beers but not as good a range as there is in the Hop Pole. Won't let you in with kids either which isn't good when you need a swifty half-way through a shopping marathon.

9 Oct 2008 19:44

The Buckinghamshire Yeoman, Bedgrove

Too angry to type. Meant to say top of head was level with the line - i.e. well short of where it should have been. Grrrr.

8 Mar 2008 17:46

The Red Lion Hotel, Wendover

Used to be a really nice place this and then turned all impersonal and pricey too. Real shame.

HOWEVER, for months now when I've driven past the place has been shut due to what must be one almighty refurbishment. Constant works, even over the Christmas period. Cannot believe it can reopen without improvement so looking forward to when it does.

Can someone let us know as soon as it reopens and we'll pop in there and rate it?

7 Feb 2008 00:49

Chicago Rock Cafe, Aylesbury

Horrible place. Never ceases to amaze me that people queue for hours to get in. The place is empty anyway, that's just the L.D. on the door's sense of humour. The beer must have done something really nasty in a former life and it won't get any karma points for this one either. The food is even worse... should you ever get it before you tolerance snaps and you escape. Should you stick around you'll be abused by a desperate divorcee whose first husband must have been high as a kite when he married her... and ten years of marriage have killed any redeeming features she may have had in the first place. Only night with any redeeming qualities is Monday night when some very pretty girls are in there. Unfortunately they leave early as they have school the next day. Read the rest of the review and take note: AVOID!

18 Jan 2008 19:58

Rockwoods, Aylesbury

Pleasant enough place. Beer OK. Food OK. Everything sort of... OK.

8 Dec 2007 16:22

The Harrow, Aylesbury

Quality of beer has been a bit hit and miss recently. Not cleaning regularly enough or looking after the beer as well as they might. Pity, used to be pretty good in here.

8 Dec 2007 16:18

The Harrow, Aylesbury

Nice atmosphere and decent ale, although they do tend to run out rather frequently. Mind you head if you're 6' or over!

10 Nov 2007 23:38

The Buckinghamshire Yeoman, Bedgrove

Now been bought out by Orchid and there's no doubt they mean business. Really spent some money on the place. Less like a youth-club and more like a pub. Some real beers (Adnams and also Staropramen) and even proper coffee. Reasonable prices too. Kept all the screens for the sports. Quiz night on Thursday very popular. Have to say, if this place is failing it isn't from lack of input from Orchid. Just wonder if the managers have the zip required to do them justice. Hope so.

10 Nov 2007 23:32

The Farmer's Bar, Aylesbury

Do like this place. Beer was excellent although doesn't quite push the Hop Pole out of the Aylesbury top slot. Food was OK. Only minor quibble was not being able to take my sleeping 6 month year old baby in there when I needed refreshment from my Christmas shopping. Recommended, especially if you're in the centre of town or thereabouts.

30 Jun 2007 20:59

The Hogshead, Aylesbury

Yes, ANOTHER slug and lettice. Same place, same staff (near enough), new paint and 30% more expensive than it was before. Trying to be upmarket in a town that considers Wayne Rooney's girlfriend to be a toff. Just plain sad. Go to the Harrow of King's Head. If you can still walk that far then try and make it to the Hop Pole. Cheaper and FAR better quality.

30 Jun 2007 20:56

Magoos, Aylesbury

Last thing I saw they were filming here. Different theme each time to see which one worked or something. Think the message is clear. Nothing is working for it!

30 Jun 2007 20:52

The Firecrest, Aylesbury

Irish coffees in here are superb. Can't recomment them enough. Not bad beer. Sunday roast is very good value indeed. If you go in about 3-4pm the rush has finished and you get served double quick. Nice to sit in front of the fire and relax. Watch out for the bar manageress / waitress dressed in black. Absolute fox with a figure to die for. Worth visiting to see her alone. Part of the same chain that owns the 5 Bells and also the Bugle Horn, I think. Vintage Inns?

21 Dec 2006 18:49

The Ship Inn, East Looe

Excellent beer. Friendly atmosphere with a good range of entertainment (pool table, quiz machine, big screen sports.) Young female bar manager with what has to be the sexiest arse on the planet. Worth a 250 mile drive just to admire that for an evening. Spendid range of beverages too for those who prefer something less alcoholic. Highly recommended if you're in the area.

1 Nov 2006 18:51

Cotton Wheel, Aylesbury

A local bar for local people. Relatively cheap. Friendly? Not exactly. Unfriendly? No, not that either. Best to take some friends if you want conversation.

Beer is the usual chemical crud although cheap for the area. Food is cheap and tastes it. Pool is cheap too, so that's a bonus, I suppose.

Main entertainment when I was there was watching a squirrel on the back windowsill. Other than that, I wouldn't bother.

29 Sep 2006 17:48

Yates, Aylesbury

Seems this place, Hogshead and the Litter Tray (also known as the Littern Tree) are all owned by the same company with the same menu and pretty much the same beer. I'd say Hogshead was the pick of the bunch at the moment, purely because it actually has some choice on beer and the coffee is better. More young girls in Yates at the weekend though. Guess you'll have to balance that somehow. Warm up in Hogshead then pop next door for a letch? Rating unchanged.

28 Sep 2006 18:58

The Hogshead, Aylesbury

That should have been hog rather than hos. Keyboard problems here...

26 Sep 2006 18:29

The Hop Pole Inn, Aylesbury

Spent an afternoon here recently, sat out front in the sunshine working my way through the beers, and really enjoyed it. Food was ok, nothing to write home about but reasonable enough. Beer was great. Loads of choice from local ales to belgian lagers. Lovely. Didn't have a bad pint. One tip: unless you're a seasoned drinker I suggest switching to halves. If you like your beer and in Aylesbury then this pub is a must.

26 Sep 2006 18:27

The Hogshead, Aylesbury

Hogshead = cask of ale equivalent to approximately 50 imperial gallons.

Hog's head is the head of the hog. Hos is defined (in the same dictionary) as a domesticated pig, esp. a castrated male reared for slaughter. Hmmm. Could be rather clever joke on the staff or clientele?

Only one ale in here now: Bombadier. However, tastes good and only 2 a pint on Friday and Saturdays now - as are all the other drinks I might add. Seems there's new management in here and they're really making a go of it. Toilets have been fixed and are clean, pleasant atmosphere; worth a go!

26 Sep 2006 18:19

Magoos, Aylesbury

Changed its name again. Seems to be thirty-one or somesuch. Nice venue upstairs and chairs outside overlooking the fountain during the day. Very pleasant.

9 Aug 2006 18:28

The Hogshead, Aylesbury

Ought to mention they are no longer charging to get in. The Bombadier is superb when they remember to clean the pipes. Not good at this and they keep running out on a Saturday. I ask you. Probably best place in Aylesbury on a Friday night when they have the DJ in... not that that's saying a lot. Auschwitz gas chambers have more life than Aylesbury on a Friday night.

9 Aug 2006 18:27

Magoos, Aylesbury

Now appears to be called sub zero or something similar!

30 Mar 2006 18:47

The Buckinghamshire Yeoman, Bedgrove

Thursday quiz night is really kicking these days, maybe even rivalling the footie days. Definitely the place to watch the World Cup. There's also some mad australian who strips naked every Friday and Saturday night at midnight and then does circuits round the bar. 'Course, there's the same old problem of no women go in there. Odd now I come to mention it. Didn't notice any pink doorknobs or rainbows behind the bar...

15 Feb 2006 18:47

The Hogshead, Aylesbury

While I do like this pub, it has started charging a quid to get in on Friday and Saturday nights. What does it offer that the King's Head, the Harrow or the Hobgoblin doesn't? Nothing. Therefore, if it is a Friday or a Saturday then I'd head to the above, in that order. Failing that, go next door to Yates. The beer may not be as good by but by heck the women are - better quality and more of them if you stick around till eleven.

15 Feb 2006 18:42

The Farmer's Bar, Aylesbury

Definitely a haven of civilisation in the centre of town. Smoke free, no music, lovely beer. Recommend the Chiltern Ale or the Beechwood Ale. Friendly with a lovely atmosphere. More of a couples pub, I'd say, although I'm sure singles will like it too.

3 Jan 2006 18:35

The Buckinghamshire Yeoman, Bedgrove

Thought I'd best point out that they don't do Karaoke here anymore. Hogshead Monday night is your best bet there.

3 Jan 2006 18:31

Hobgoblin, Aylesbury

Beer OK but can be a bugger trying to get served. Tends to be open late which is useful. Bring your whaling gear if you're looking for action...

21 Oct 2005 18:03

The Hogshead, Aylesbury

Had Bombadier on last time I was in there. Tasted lovely. Some rather tasty bar-maids working here too. Always good when skirt is scarce (everyday execpt last Friday / Saturday of each month.) Damn good latte in here too, although they call it a lar-tay.

Some of the women are pretty scary in here, although that's Aylesbury all over. It is no coincidence that Hammer Films were made around there.

21 Oct 2005 17:58

Yates, Aylesbury

Grills now off the 2 for 1 offer. Good job really, if I'd eaten much more steak I think my colon would have exploded. Still best meal deals in the town centre though.

Still a bugger getting served in the evening and when you do it is only the piss-poor beers served in all binge drinking establishments. Oh, stay away from the Kronenboug Blanc - that really was vile.

If I were you I'd go next door to Hogshead in the evening... although the pole dancing on Friday / Saturday night can be entertaining. Being Aylesbury they've had to reinforce the pole of course...

21 Oct 2005 17:53

The Weavers, Aylesbury

Another of the 'Qs' chain. Big screens with sports all day and cheap beer. Winner of the cheapest decent food in Aylesbury. 2 rump steaks work out at about 6 quid, all day. Quick service too. Plus, 3 pool tables at a quid a go. For a cheap action packed lunch you can't beat it. Not sure it is worth bothering with in the evening although they have the odd good event.

16 Mar 2005 17:28

Yates, Aylesbury

Finally had a semi-major refit. Kind of a seventies retro feel to it, although somewhat schizophrenic. Very relaxing now with candles on tables in the evening. The pool tables upstairs are a little incongrous with this theme but that's the refit all over. Overall I'd have to say it is an improvement. Major plus is almost all food on 2 for 1 offer, including grills menu. Beer is still the usual piped rubbish but a few of the bar-maids are nice enough to make up for it. Personally I'd rather do Hogshead next door but it could make a nice change.

16 Mar 2005 17:24

Magoos, Aylesbury

Pleasantly surprised by this place. Beer was nothing to shout about but the lager was safe. Very relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Being a sad lonely thirty-something I wandered in on my own and met some very interesting and friendly people. Not too young and not too old - thoroughly enjoyed the evening.
