Eight Bells, Chipping Campden

Fine pub in an area that tends to have too much reliance on tourists. The service from the staff couldn't be faulted - attentive without being pushy, and the food was good quality, if overpriced. The beer was well kept; the decor and furnishings comfortable.

The Blue Bell Inn, Kettlewell

A well run pub, with pleasant and helpful staff, a friendly landlord, good food at reasonable prices, and decent beer. Above all, it is a pub with a bit of atmosphere, probably due to having a mixture of locals and visitors.

The Unicorn Inn, Bayford

We went there on a quiet lunchtime, mainly for some food. The landlord could not have been more pleasant, and we had excellent light lunches - that were actually rather filling - and some well kept beer.

Hanmer Arms Hotel, Whitchurch

Deceptively large pub in a small village, popular with locals, and specialising in good quality home produced food. The manager has turned this pub round since taking over, and has returned the pub to being a focal point for the community. There is usually a good crowd of people eating here, both lunchtimes and weekends, and the food is generally of good quality at mid-range prices - the carvery at the weekend is especially popular. A few more tables and chairs for drinkers would be welcome.

The Waggon and Horses, Surbiton

Best pub in Surbiton. Although a large pub, the bars are arranged to retain a good atmosphere, and it's nearly always possible to find a seat. There are plenty of comfortable chairs and sofas, and the clientele are a friendly group, somewhat on the older side. There's a garden area at the rear, popular with smokers. The beer is well kept but a bit on the pricey side; I can't comment on the food as I've not tried it. Two minor negatives: there seems to be a shortage of serving staff on occasions; and the chunky tables in the upper bar are more like road blocks than tables.

The Punch Bowl Inn, Swaledale

Very much a pub where people go to eat, rather than drink. While there's nothing wrong with that, a small change of emphasis would make both welcome, and give a greater sense of community. The food, although not cheap, is of very high quality and I have never had anything other than delicious fare. Booking is advisible, especially for weekends. There are a few tables outside, and on a warm summer's evening, there can be few greater pleasures than sitting with a pint of Black Sheep admiring the magnificent views down the Swaledale valley.

The Canbury Arms, Kingston Upon Thames

Went on a warm Sunday lunchtime; it was moderately busy, and the service was very slow. We had a main course and a sweet and it took around 2 hours all in. The food was quite expensive, and not of high quality. The roast beef was tough; the meat pie had very little meat in it. On the plus side the staff were pleasant and the decor is clean and modern.

The Smugglers Inn, Dawlish

A food-orientated pub with a restaurant and pleasant outdoor area at the rear. It's located on a main road, and has a large car park. The restaurant can get busy at weekends and will often need advance booking; however, the same food is served in the rest of the pub, so it's very unlikely you'll be turned away. The staff are friendly and efficient and the beer is well kept. The food is a mixture of standard pub fare but also some specials that are a cut above average, while the prices are fair.

The Cock and Bull, Sutton

This pub gets a remarkably low rating, which is not justified. The beer is decent, the food is a cut above the usual pub fare, the staff are friendly, and bye and large the customers are not the worst. The general atmosphere of the pub is lively and there's a good mixture of ages, sexes, and social types. OK, it's suprising no-one's killed themselves falling down the stairs to the toilets, but I can put up with that (so long as it's not me).

Stephan Langton Inn, Abinger Common

Family-friendly pub, food-orientated. Pleasant relaxed atmosphere on a Sunday lunchtime, but it does get busy so be prepared to wait for a table. The beer was well kept, the food was very good, if a little pricey, and the staff were professional and friendly. Beautiful location, with good walking nearby for those with the energy. Parking is restricted, and finding the pub is quite difficult (even with sat nav!).

The Lamb, Surbiton

Small, busy pub with good atmosphere and friendly bar staff. The pub's cats provide entertainment for the customers and get spoilt rotten!

The Cricketers, Cobham

A pub that's popular with young families as it's very child friendly, but for me it was let down by very average quality food (the quantities were not generous either) that was also expensive. On the plus side, the range of beers is reasonable, and the staff friendly.
