Glens Bar, New Cumnock

Standard Ayrshire village pub. A bit rough and ready, but worth a visit if you're in New Cumnock (not that you're exactly spoiled for choice there). The locals would appear to have a very poor geographical knowledge (especially Tam Wilson). They believe that Iceland now shares a border with Norway and Finland!

The Charlotte Despard, Archway

Awful place.

The Flask, Hampstead

I'm not really a fan of Young's pubs, but if you can ignore the relatively poor selection of beer The Flask really is a nice, cosy little local with a typically mixed Hampstead clientelle. The staff have always been friendly whenever I've been, and the reasonably priced food (well reasonably priced for Hampstead!) is of a consistently high standard. Highly recommended!

The Marathon Restaurant, Chalk Farm

A chippie/kebab shop that's open until 4am, sells cans of cheap beer and plays live music (Elvis impersonator was on last time I went in). Fantastic! The perfect place to stop off at on the way home from a night out in Camden.

The Brazen Head, Glasgow

Not often you see the words "great" and "Celtic" in the same sentence! Very unfriendly establishment. One to avoid.

Ye Old Forte Bar, Ayr

Had around 8 pints in here recently. Paid for one maybe. I've no idea how they make a profit. At least they all had a great Christmas! Superb local pub which is home to Linda, the best barmaid in Ayrshire. All the pubs on South Harbour Street are worth a visit, but this is probably the pick of the bunch.

The Lion and Unicorn, Kentish Town

Nice unpretentious place for a relaxing pint and a game of pool (two tables!) in the afternoon. Unlike many "local" pubs the regulars are a friendly bunch and embrace strangers rather than snarl at them. Informed by one of the regulars that the pub has gone downhill since the recent change of ownership. Not having been before the takeover, I am unable to comment on the accuracy of this. Good pub though. Well worth a visit.

The New Chandos, Colindale

Great real pub. A bit rough and ready but that only adds to its character. Friendly, helpful barstaff, excellent Sunday roast. Got a couple of pool tables and a few plasma TVs for the football too. Easily the best in the area!

The Oddfellows, Watford

Nothing nasty about this place at all. Very down to earth pub which does an excellent pint of Guinness. Well worth a visit.

The Central Bar, Leith

Definitely the best pub in Edinburgh. A real old fashioned drinkers pub. Thank God places like The Central Bar still exist!

Ye Olde White Harte, Hull

Excellent little pub. Definitely the best in town. Original features very much intact. Beer well kept. Friendly staff. Couldn't ask for more!

The Hole in the Wall, Hull

Decent enough friendly local pub. Reasonable selection of well kept beers. Worth a quick visit if passing by, but the pubs on both Anlaby Rd and Beverley Rd are much more interesting.

The Albion, Bethnal Green

A West Brom pub in Bethnal Green? Yes it is true! And a great pub it is too. Superb for watching the football, no matter who you support. Very friendly bar staff make you feel like a regular. Highly recommended!

The Horseshoe, Hampstead

The Horseshoe is a fantastic place. Another newly refurbished gastropub attracting well turned out, personality free 30 somethings with its bland IKEA decor, overpriced menu and tasteless home brew.

It's fantastic because it keeps these buffoons out of the few remaining decent pubs in Hampstead such as The Duke Of Hamilton!

Quinn's, Camden

Quinns is a bit of a one trick pony I'm afraid. Yes, the wide selection of Belgian & German bottled beer is unrivalled. If you're looking for anything other than a 9% Framboise it might be best to go elsewhere though.

I'm all for eccentric old landlords, but there's a difference between being eccentric and being downright rude. Mr Quinn is not a happy chappy! The service here is poor to say the least and the wide range of bottled beer doesn't compensate for the fact that you'll struggle to get a decent pint on draught. The Guinness in particular was extremely watery on my last visit.

Quinns isn't the worst pub in the world, but it's certainly not deserving of the hype on here.

The Camden Eye, Camden

Yep, gone from the newly refurbished Camden Eye are the drunks, druggies, drop-outs and weirdos that frequented The Halfway House. Gone are the old rickety tables and chairs, the filthy toilets and the scabby 80s decor. Gone is all the character!!!

Well done folks. Yet another bland modern bar to add to the collection. Aren't we spoiled for choice!

Rob Roy, Paddington

Great for watching the Scotland games, but best avoided the rest of the time. Distinctly average food, poor selection of beer and a complete lack of character. There are many many more interesting pubs in the area than this one!

The RGU Students Union, Aberdeen

Does anyone go here? The place has always been deserted when I've popped in. Most noteable for selling quarter bottles of MD 20/20!!!

16 Nov 2006 17:33

The Rose Bowl, Aberdeen

Haven't been here since becoming The Thistle, but the atmosphere in The Rose Bowl was second to none. Was first attracted to the pub by the booming sounds of Jive Bunny being played by local karaoke legend Danny Dyce. Within 15 minutes I had been offered oral sex by a lovely young lady sporting a 1982 Liverpool away top. She told me we would have to be quick as her husband would be arriving within the hour. Pure class!

16 Nov 2006 17:28

The Bobbin, Aberdeen

Reasonable student pub which is now nowhere near as good as it was in the mid to late 90s following it's conversion to a Scream pub. The local Aberdonians delight in the cheap food though. Still dominated by rugby w@nks!

16 Nov 2006 17:23

The Golden Gates, Edinburgh

Decent enough local boozer with friendly sevice. Food and drink both reasonably priced. The 70/- was a bit off when I went, but I'm assured that this was a one off. Shows Countdown on large screen TV in the afternoons too. What more could you want?

16 Nov 2006 13:54

The King William IV, Hampstead

This used to be a decent, friendly boozer where thankfully idiots like FrancisLong were in the minority as non gays and "fameles" were made more than welcome by the gay regulars who were obviously more comfortable with their sexuality than Francis is.

Has now been destroyed by yet another horrendous refurbishment and has little to offer other than the pleasant beer garden which still remains. Very sad!

16 Nov 2006 13:38

The Heath Street Bar, Hampstead

CLOSED.

Now set to be a Knight Frank Estate Agents. No great loss really!
