The Hermits Cave, Camberwell

Best traditional boozer in Camberwell.

The Amersham Arms, New Cross

The front bar would be even better if they occassionally had some traditional Irish folk music with fiddles, bodhrans and whistles.

The Dog and Bell, Deptford

By the way you can keep your bike in the small patio garden. Bar staff are really cool about people wheeling their bikes through to the back of the pub. Ans as its out of the way this is a definite plus.

The Dog and Bell, Deptford

Best pub in Deptford. Well okay that's not hard. It's one of the best pubs in South East London and maybe all London too. It's a bit out of the way. But it's worth looking up. I recommend going to Deptford Market on Saturday and then taking a walk or cycle to the Dog and Bell for their fantastic bitters for lunch and then pop down to Greenwich Market and the Cutty Sark. This pub has an amazing range of bitters and ales of all sorts. It has bar billiards which for those not in the know, is an old fashioned pub game. Has pub quiz on Sundays. Could do with a dart board and some live music and then would be almost perfect.

The Thames, Greenwich

Been closed down for years. Nice building though, so I hope it doesn't get bulldozed. I see that there a lot of redevelopment/regeneration around this part of Greenwich. I hope someone will re-open this pub to all the new locals once the new flats have been built. If its new owner needs inspiration, I say copy the Dog and Bell in Deptford.

The Cutty Sark Tavern, Greenwich

Best pub in all Greenwich. Great authentic interior and some good bitters. Nice view of the river and the Millenium Dome too. It's definitely worth the walk from Greenwich town centre. Let's hope they don't go and ruin it like they did to The Cricketers.

The Gipsy Moth, Greenwich

Only really worth going in the Summer because of the garden. It was quite nice a few years back before they ponced it up too much.

The Lost Hour, Greenwich

This pub wins the award for worst pub in all Greenwich. No, actually come to think of it, it's the worst pub in all South East London.

The North Pole, Greenwich

This was a fantastic old fashioned boozer in the late 90's with an authentic interior. It had nice bitters and a pub theatre upstairs. I Saw an Oscar Wilde play and Shakespeare's The Tempest here. Somehow I doubt it's current clientele would know much about Shakespeare or Oscar Wilde. Am I right in thinking it had two bars? Anyway, I wouldn't bother going to it nowadays. It's just plain boring.

The Greenwich Union, Greenwich

Of all the poncey bars in Greenwich this is the best. Not quite the best bar in Greenwich but the best poncey one mind. It brews its own beer. The selection includes interesting fruit beer and chocolate stout too (mmm). Very nice if a little pricey. Does some good food too. There's a traditional pub next door if that's what you prefer.

The Powder Monkey, Greenwich

This was a fantastic pub with an old fashioned (i.e. authentic) interior with great live music, including folk, jazz, and Ska/Jazz (Skazz). Now it's gone! What on Earth happened? This was always busy on market days. I can't imagine they where making a loss. It was so much better than the poncey and smokey Admiral Hardy or the newly poncified Coach and Horses. When I saw it last the original interior had all been ripped out. What a mistake! There won't be any old fashioned bars left in Greenwich if things keep going down the pan at this rate

The Crab and Lobster Tap, Ventnor

I've just checked the facts and Barnabas Wild got his licence to run the Crab and Lobster in 1788. He was a eccentric chap and used to put a bowl on his head when it rained. He once walked from Portsmouth to London in a day I believe. Any chance of a free pint chaps?

The Crab and Lobster Tap, Ventnor

My great-great-great grandfather's brother (Barnabas Wild) owned this pub in the early 1800's. I wonder if I could get a free pint here if I showed them the proof.

The Marquis of Granby, New Cross

This pub, the Amersham Arms and the Montague Arms are the only real old-fashioned boozers left in New Cross. Let's hope they don't get 'modernised'.

The Amersham Arms, New Cross

Best late night bar in New Cross (since the death of the old Goldsmiths Tavern). The Front Bar is where South East Londons Irish hang out and listen to country music and has a great atmosphere on Friday and Saturday nights. The Back Bar has the Catapult Club and open late most night of the week Monday - The Monday Club (Comedy), Tuesday and Thursday (Jazz), Wednesdays - The Gluerooms (experimental music), Fridays- The Catapult Club (Rock) and Saturdays - Club Cavort (Rock).

The Wickham Arms, Brockley

Does it do food?

2 Mar 2006 19:58

The Wickham Arms, Brockley

The best pub in the Brockley/Crofton Park area. Could do with some more real ales though. I'd attend this pub more if it had a really decent selection of bitters.

The Royal George, Deptford

Used to be great when they had bands playing. That was before Samuel Smiths management ordered them not to have any music live or not (what a stick in the mud)! Now it's a decent pub (although a bit dull) that serves the cheapest beer in New Cross/Deptford.
In the good old days (the 90's) it even had a pub theatre upstairs.

The Goldsmiths Tavern, New Cross

The Goldsmiths Tavern now sells the most expensive Guinness in New Cross (or South East London for that matter)! Don't bother going!
If this place is to get back its old popularity it should do the following:
*Bring back live bands (to do this the accoustics will need to be improved. These were messed up with the last refurb)
* Change the decor to something a bit alternative. Or combine something old-fashioned and cosy with alternative and hip. Maybe get a local graffiti artist to re-style the dance room.In other rooms put up rock posters on the walls.
*Bring in better beers (why no real ales?) and why is Guinness so expensive?
* Get the bar staff to be friendlier and get a new lot of bouncers who aren't so menacing.
*Put local bands on the jukebox as there used to be.
* Bring back comedy nights (Reeves and Mortimer met here you know)
*Bring back the Friday Ska night and the occasional punk night/drum and bass/rockabilly/rock n roll/reggae/ whatever.
*Look at why the Montague Arms has become so popular since the tavern changed i.e. live bands and dj's put on independently by local music fans who are in full control of the night.Bar staff just run the bar.
*do something unusual like they used to i.e. an art show night, or even an s&m night. That sort of weirdness often happened in the old tavern.

The Montague Arms, New Cross

Oh I forgot there is also the Eclectic Electric night too.

The Montague Arms, New Cross

The best pub in New Cross. Definitely worth crossing the river for its music nights i.e. Fear of Music, the Lost Club, Greenwich Pirate, I Love NX and the new Wolfgang Bopp night. It is open every evening (except Wednesdays) and Sunday daytime too if you fancy a fantastic Sunday lunch. Free board games and a really bizarre interior (e.g. a stage coach with zebras head and a penny farthing). This pub is so good both New Cross and Peckham claim it as their own (BTW it is just in NX).

4 Sep 2005 02:22

The Paradise Bar, New Cross

It seem slike the Paradise Bar or the Six String Bar has closed down again. What's happened? Has the council been causing trouble again?
