The Rising Sun, Tarporley

I cannot understand how this pub manages such a large menu! But they have a *vast* menu of food items, and all of the ones I've sampled have been well done and not expensive. This is good-quality pub food, not "fine dining", but all the better for that- there are enough pretentious places in the vicinity.

The beer is good and reasonably priced, the ambiance is warm (especially when there's a fire going) and it's altogether a nice place to be, especially when it's cold outside.

My favourite pub in Tarporley village, not least because the young shouty element go elsewhere!

Travellers Rest, Alpraham

An unspoilt gem. No concession to anything but beer- no music, no fruit machines, no food other than snacks and crisps. But good beer, well kept, and friendly, unpretentious customers and staff.

Outside toilet (boasting nesting swallows in the summer), bowling green, garden.... and beer at 1990s prices!

Deservedly on the CAMRA register of unspoilt pubs- see it now while you can.

Davenport Arms, Tarporley

Currently closed for business, I understand. No-one knows for how long.

The Dysart Arms, Bunbury

The best pub in the immediate area, as an all-rounder.

Friendly, even to just casual drinkers. Like most village pubs these days, the Dysart relies on its restaurant to make ends meet; unlike some in the area, it's not unfriendly to the drinker. There are multiple ales on at any one time, and the choice is changed regularly. The bar area is dog-friendly, and has a roaring fire in colder weather; I'd sooner walk 2 miles here than go to my "local".

The restaurant is also very good; imaginative food at decent prices, ranging from simple pies to the heights of haute cuisine. Once a year, there is a Pie Festival that lasts a week, with a variety of pies and beers to go with them. The restaurant area is also very pleasant, with a variety of places to sit (some in the "library") and also tables outside in the warmer months.

The only downside is the limited parking.

The Tollemache arms, Alpraham

While it does have "real ale", it's a choice of Robinson's, Robinson's or Robinson's.

And it's not really a beer-drinkers' pub. The landlord has notions of "fine dining", and rather looks down on those who'd prefer to sit at the bar with a pint and a packet of crisps. Some nights, your conversation will be drowned out by the rather lugubrious pianist.

The food is adequate, if a little over-priced for what it is.

Better to go to the Dysart, a couple of miles away in Bunbury, which is practically a permanent beer festival and doesn't despise "mere" beer-drinkers the same way (and does much better food for about the same money).
