The Half Brick, Worthing

Returned after a 6-month absence for Sunday lunch. Still impressed by decor, ambience, landlord and very chirpy barmaid/waitress.

The Royal Sovereign, Shoreham by Sea

If it's good enough for Ken Bishop it's good enough for me!

The Bridge Inn, Shoreham by Sea

Went in 4-handed lunchtime 9/1/08. First time for several months. Very pleasantly surprised by quick and cheerful service from young barmaid. Adnams on tap was first-rate.
Food came very promptly, hot and well-presented.
I won't leave it as long next time.

The Sussex Cricketer, Hove

It's a chain pub but the food is much better than usual for such a place. Friendly staff and nice atmosphere. Go in after a County match and there's a chance to talk to some International cricketers as well as some up-and-coming youngsters.
Good beer selection - nice real ales as well as a selection of cold-and-fizzies plus a quality selection of wines

The Railway Tavern, Penicuik

Penicuik is my home town, and although I have been away for more than 40 years, Leester's, as it was known all these years ago, is always an early port-of-call when I go 'home.' It has certainly changed over the years, from a beer-swiller's location to a reasonably family-friendly lunchtime place. Can't comment on the youngsters at weekends, but remember...you used to be one yourself. Didn't you?

The Surrey Arms, Shoreham by Sea

It was the Surry (not Surrey) Arms. Just for the record.

The Royal Sovereign, Shoreham by Sea

Believe me, if Ken Bishop has recommended this pub, it has to be good.
And it is!

Marliplins, Shoreham by Sea

Now this is a 'Pub-man's pub!' Antique building with low beams and, when you get to the bar, a terrific selection of well-tended beers. Bar food is well up to scratch and the food in the restaurant section - not too pricey - is excellent.
It has its collection of regulars; I get in there very occasionally but the same group of old boys is collected round the bar. There are a few seats out on the pavement so you can sit there, relax, and imagine you've gone continental.
Roll on non-smoking regulations and this pub will be in line for a perfect ten.

The Green Jackets, Shoreham by Sea

I first went there with a party of retired old farts for a lunchtime 'do'. I thought food was so memorable I had to return. I phoned to reserve a table and was told there were no reservations, only first come, first serve. Got there to find a queue and a waiting time of 45 minutes. I think that must have been around the time of licensee change. Beer was OK on previous visit but did not wait around to find out if it still was.

The Bridge Inn, Shoreham by Sea

Oh dear ! Last time there I found tht some of staff are from Eastern Europe and still finding their feet. Girl I spoke to was from Slovakia and very friendly. Food service was OK but I agree with comments about microwave. Look at the pumps, point out which beer you want and go sit on the terrace. Cellar care is obviously not down to the bar staff as the ale was yummie!

The Swiss Cottage, Shoreham by Sea

Great location, especially if you are a family outing and the sun is shining. Beer is fine but the last time I was there I walked out because nobody seemed to want to take my food order and when they did they allowed some guy to muscle to the front of the queue.

The Red Lion Inn, Shoreham by Sea

This pub has a nice atmosphere to it and the beer is great. I also find the food a bit pricey. The decor and style is lovely but don't forget to duck coming in the door unless you are under 5 foot tall!!

The Amsterdam, Shoreham By Sea

The bar food is fine but service in the restaurant can be slow.
Beer choices and condition are well above average.
Loses out a bit on style to the Red Lion across the road.

The Swan Inn, Worthing

Don't be tempted into the Jack Horner. This pub is brilliant. The decor is proper 'pub', it has a welcoming ambience that hits you as you come in the door. Somehow it manages to be warm in winter and cool in summer. My favourite barmaid works here, the beer is fabulous as is the food.
It will probably rate a '10' when the smoking ban comes in as it can get a bit smoky at times.

The Half Brick, Worthing

I'm a frequent visitor for Sunday luch and the menu is excellent. Cheerful and helpful bar staff and the last time I was there Mum had the kids all pitching in to help. Cockney landlord is larger than life and has good ideas about music. Very good choices of proper beer.

The New Sussex Hotel, Lancing

I used to be a regular here but the atmosphere has gradually become less welcoming. They have had recent problems with the Police owing to late-night loud music. By all accounts the licensee dropped himself in it by becoming abusive to the Old Bill.

The Farmers, Lancing

Huge improvement. I think all the yobbos and their floozies have migrated to the Merry Monk. Better if they improved their beer choices and I have not yet had a go at their food.

The Merry Monk, Lancing

OK lunch times. Evening it fills up with fatsos with tattoos, male and female, and everything is far too loud. If you want a place to relax, the station is 50 yards away and Shoreham is only 5 minutes distant with plenty of pubs I'd rather recommend.

Sussex Potter, North Lancing

Nice location, plenty of parking and good decor, but it is a chain pub and it's defferent every time you go in, as management changes. I'm giving an average mark over 5 visits in last 5 years.

The Ball Tree Inn, Sompting

Not for me. Be more bearable when smoking ban is introduced, although, judging from attitude of regulards it will be difficult enforce. Sadly, it is the local for a number of problem families who live nearby. Whilst I might sympathise with them I don't really want to drink with them.

The Crabtree Inn, Lancing

Very acceptable. Went in public during the day and no dreaded loud music. Very cheerful and happy barmaid - Gig from Thailand. Quick food service with very enjoyable choice.
Lounge continues Thai connection as chef's wife is from there and they have Thai buffets on certain days.
English carvery at weekends - very good and reasonably priced
