The Warwick Arms, Maldon

Notably the 2nd worst pub in the town after the Swan. It's like watching all the worst episodes of Eastenders at the same time.

To be fair, the folk running this place have done a pretty good job in trying to build up a friendly atmosphere. The loos are much improved. Mobbed in the summer, nice and cosy in winter.

Summer Pavilion my arse. Owned by the same plonker that owns the Blue Boar. Not worth bothering with. The view over the mud is definitely not the eight wonder of the world.

This place need putting out of it's misery. Grays should be ashamed that this once fine place has been run down to its current state. Go somewhere else.

Excellent. No other single word will do. Four or five locally brewed ales, mostly from the Maldon Brewing Co, as you'd expect, with a fine range of Nigel's bottled ales to hand. Fizzy white and red for the ladies, served by the ever fragrant Annie, and no lagers or spirits. A micro beer house in name and design. Seating for about a dozen, standing room for about the same. If you don't know anyone there when you arrive, you'll be friends with everyone by the time you leave.

Ever since the owner described local townsfolk as "losers" in the press there's been a big drop off of punters, especially with the Carps now on form and the recent opening of the Tap Room and Farmers Yard. Don't bother. Really, just don't.

Now refitted by Wetherspoons, who did a fantastic job of restoring and extending the building. A good selection of low priced ales, well kept and varied in type. Usual Spoons clientèle; old timers during the day and Essex boys on the lash at weekends. No separate children's room, which is a shame as the eight year olds walk around like they own the place.

Recently taken over by new management, this place will need a lot of work to turn it round. Usually full of chav kids slamming shots, and some old duffers at the end of the bar that don't know what year it is. Redeeming feature is the dance hall behind the main bar, which hosts R & R nights every other Wednesday. Maldon Gold is always good, and probably the cheapest in town bar the Con club.

Ale afficionadoes tend to avoid this place- if you tend to judge a cellarman by the state of the loos (advice given to me by a former Ridley's worker), you'd probably not bother with this pub.

The Round Bush, Roundbush

Well managed traditional style pub with a nice atmosphere. Roast taters on the bar on Sunday lunchtime!

Re-opened after recent refit. Occasional live music. Ales slightly over-cooled-buy two to let the second warm up a bit!

The tables get a bit sticky from time to time. Very (ahem) Victorian loos. Always good beer- regularly monitered by tame resident brewer.

The Rose and Crown, Maldon

Known by locals as the Flying Bottle!

The Queens Head, Maldon

Beer is well kept, but sometimes difficult to get served when very busy. The smell of vinegar on the chips on meals served in the bar can put you off your pint though.
