Amble Inn, Harpenden

6 reviews and only one by someone who has commented on any other pubs that should set the alarm bells ringing.

A group of us went there to eat there recently, and despite it being 8pm on a Saturday night, we were the only people eating. One other group came in at 9ish but that was it. A handful of drinkers (4 or 5) hardly helped to create any sort of atmosphere.

Not sure how to describe the decor, I suppose some would call it minimalist, but that implies some sort of conscious styling decision. Id suggest that the owners just havent bought enough furniture.

Despite the lack of competition for the waitresss attention, we still had to go to the bar for the first round of drinks.

Three of our group ordered steak, only to be told that they only had one left even though no one else was eating and the menu was already quite limited.

The food we were able to order was actually okay. Service was slow, but thats not necessarily a bad thing.

But overall a really, really disappointing evening given the reviews on here, and one that has knocked my confidence in BITE as a reliable source of opinion.

Always prepared to give a place a second chance, but this place was so comically poor, and the town has so many decent alternatives, that I wont be rushing back until someone else (whose opinion I can trust) tells me theyve had a good night there.

The Harpenden Arms, Harpenden

Agree with the comment below, Fullers beer in tip top condition and tasty Thai food but a few too many plastic cockneys at times, avoid them and you'll love it.

The Cross Keys, Harpenden

Characterful pub consisting of a smoky bar (with roaring fire in the winter) and a small but comfortable lounge. Recently been through a dodgy spell which saw the manager run off with the takings but seems to be back to normal now. Decent ale (London Pride and Taylor's Landlord on last visit), and a surprisingly large and secluded beer garden. Best pub in the town centre and well worth a visit.

Silver Cup, Harpenden

Ate here recently and really enjoyed it. Not the cheapest of places but still relative value for money given the quality of the food. Has a decent range beer too, Pedigree was in top condition.

Didn't go into the separate bar area so can't comment on how it rates as an ordinary boozer but would definitely recommend it for dinner and beer.

The Old Cock Inn, Harpenden

Can't match the Cross Keys for character but the staff are always friendly, it's easy to get served and there's a load more seats. Always 2 or 3 decent beers available. Good venue for a pre-dinner drink as it never seems over-busy early evening.

The Inn on the Green, Harpenden

I'm always disapointed by this place, no doubting it has the potential to be a great pub (location, size, outside seating etc) but somehow it doesn't work. Maybe if you're a lager drinker it's different but the beer choice is limited to Green King IPA and is usually in poor condition...perhaps I'm just too old for this place.

The Gibraltar Castle, Batford

Cracking pub, well worth a visit.

The Edinboro Castle, Camden

Definitely the best incarnation of this place since it was given a horrible All Bar One style makeover a few years ago. Still not sure if it's trying to be a pub or a restaurant but always has decent beer and like the other comments say, where else in Camden will you find a beer garden like this.

Bright Star, Luton

Who cares if the food is only average, this is a fantastic village pub which can not be faulted for location or feel of the place.

The Hadley Hotel, Barnet

A proper pub with proper beer in the otherwise beer-free urban sprawl between High Barnet and New Barnet. Used to have a nice beer garden too but they've built a house on it!
