Blue Boar, Ludlow

Shut for a while but now (about a year ago apparently) but now reopen. Popped in for a quick one and initial impressions were great. Totally restored without losing its essential character, Clean, tidy, organised. Good service, excellent Gent's Loo, quirky decoration. Don't know who owns it but it didn't feel like a managed house. Impressed.

The Church Inn, Ludlow

Recent visit very disappointing. Been going in for years but noticed that service has become very patchy. Visited last week and had one of "those days". First barman completely cocked up the round, the 2nd. lad in the afternoon was sadly in the wrong business ( no eye contact, very slow, continually chatting to other off duty members of staff, every table had empty glasses on, the fire had gone out and there were trays of half polished cutlery all along the bar top. At least 2 customers left without a drink as our mate chatted away. A senior member of the team arrived, cleared up all the chaos and I thought at last I can go to the bar and get a quick round in. Sadly no. Halfway through the round with my drinks out of reach the phone rang and was answered straight away and there followed a 5 minute call about an accommodation enquiry whilst I stood there. It's easy really ,if you have a live customer give them priority and let the phone ring. As I said probably just a bad day. Beer was good, loos clean and by early evening the place was as busy and buzzy as always. Don't get complacent guys.

The Horseshoe Inn, Ledbury

Been going there for years and seen it through a few ups and downs. It's currently on the way up with a couple of exceptions. Seems to function mainly as a pizza house with a few additional items on the menu but in my experience the thin crust pizzas are exceptionally good. It works fairly well as a pub however the bar creates a bit of a bottleneck and if the tables are full and there are a few of you enjoying a beer then you end up jumping around like a Morris Dancer to let people past. The beer is generally excellent (Butty Bach on my last visit) with the normal Lagers. The Landlady is always very friendly and helpful and there is a tall girl who works at lunchtimes who is really efficient and smiley however a couple of the male evening staff have a bit of an attitude and kind of spoil the experience. overall a good little pub for a beer in the evening but just watch the steps on the way out!

The Marlbank, Welland

Busy, friendly local pub with a loyal clientele. Sometimes feels that you are the only one there that doesn't know everybody else but this feeling does not come from the staff who are always welcoming or the owners are appear active all the time. All the draught beers seem to be in good nick and reasonably cheap. Food tends to be in the "Pub Grub" category, the loos are really good and there is a fully enclosed smoking room with a fire and a telly.

The Anchor Inn, Welland

Now called "The Inn at Welland" and essentially a restaurant. Not a Gastropub (I hate that word) but an establishment for dining at a laid table. You will not be made to feel comfortable if you try and stand at the bar and enjoy a conversation and a couple of pints. However should you go with the intention of going straight to the table and dining then the experience is generally regarded as being between very good and excellent. The food is Modern British and very good with smallish portions (suits us oldies) and about 15% more expensive than you expect.Service was poor initially but has got consistently better over the last year and the interior is crisp and modern. Definetly not a Pub and therefore not really relevant to BITE but good place to dine.

The Three Kings Inn, Hanley Castle

I may not be popular for this but this is probably the dirtiest pub in the U.K.
However a strange combination of strong individuals and loyal customers defend it fiercely. People who would normally jump up and down if they found a tiny speck on their knife put up with opaque glasses and are happy to wipe their feet on the way out. Trad ales are normally excellent and loos are not too bad. Friendly landlady who appears to work about 120 hours a week. Nearly always busy.

The Red Lion, Stiffords Bridge

Totally food led but does exactly what it says on the tin. Ballistically busy reasonable value food offering which is justifiably popular. Licencees always hiding in the kitchen until late at night but the bar and food service staff are all really friendly so maybe thats for the best. 90% of the bar counter is covered in cakes, biscuits, questionaires, cuddly toys etc. but if you persist and stand your ground you can get a drink and lean on the bar.
Not really a pub but well run and welcoming and deserving of success.

The Blue Bell Inn, Ryall

Busy main road pub, frequently very busy. Attentive friendly landlord. Bit cliquey and not comfortable if your not a regular. Food average. Lots of quantity but unskilled and lacks flair. Might struggle if not by a main road.

The Drum and Monkey, Upton-upon-Severn

Havn't been for a while but on a recent visit was as good as ever. Cooking was if anything better than ever but the bar seemed very quiet. Really friendly girls behind the bar. all in all a great pub. Just needs a bit more bustle.

The Dog and Baughton, Earls Croome

Closed forever.

Oak Inn, Staplow

Visited on a Sunday Lunch. Very busy. Appeared to be food led with 20 odd tables of people having lunch. Nice quality pub with friendly, if a bit stressed, landlord (there was a table of about 12 including 6 kids who took it in turns to see who could cry the loudest). Good choice of beers including Bathams in very good nick. Middle of the afternoon filled with locals, a T.V. appeared for the rugby, and the atmosphere became one of a cosy village pub. I imagine it would be a great local early evening. Will re visit.

The Drum and Monkey, Upton-upon-Severn

A Cracking Country Pub. Best we have been in for ages. On our first visit found everyone very friendly and efficient with excellent Wye Valley beers and really good quality house wine. Lot of food being served early evening but later filled up with locals and the atmosphere was really good.
Took some friends a couple of weeks ago and they loved it although initially they thought it was a bit up-market. Sat in front of the big log fire which great to start with but got a bit warm. Food was superb. Lots of Fish on the menu (it was a Friday) and really friendly attentive service without being pushy. Not cheap but we felt it was good value. On our top ten list of country pubs.
