The White Horse, Downton

I love this pub. Unfortunately I live just too far for it to be my local, but if I lived in Downton it would be. Good live music in the summer ("Dog House Boys" country plus others). Don't feed the dog! Hmm...might pop in later on! 8/10

The Old Inn, Woodfalls

Through the years I've seen this place go up and down like a rollercoaster. The current owners are making a good go of it in the face of a historically downtrodden rep. The themed buffet nights are excellent and at 8.95pp just right for a meal out without trekking too far. There is a fair selection of well kept beers and ales. The pub is in a position to do well given the competition in the area and I think word is slowly getting round. No hard sell. Worth checking out if you haven't been for a while...

The GlassHouse, New Malden

...further to my previous comment I must say that the situation has been monitored closely and I can safely say that it is the nicest pub in New malden - food looks great (although I haven't eaten here yet), well kept beer, good atmosphere - pretty much an antithesis of the railway it used to be. Live Jazz trio last night and cheerful, friendly bar staff with pleasant dispositions and nice views. Only the bar prices stop me giving it a 10 although to be fair it's not a place you'd go to to get hammered unless you wanted a 3 figure bar bill. Should do well!! 9/10

The GlassHouse, New Malden

FORMERLY "The Railway" went under refurbishment in Summer 2008. Not too bad - 13 for 3 drinks. 3.50 for the Kronie's a bit steep and the toilets haven't been touched in the refurb. We'll have to see. 6/10 at the mo.

The Albion, Epsom

A traditional style pub which benefits from being such, as there are no high expetations. Which is a good thing here. Beers are generally kept well and prices aren't inflated, but there seems to be no aspitarion than to sell beer and show sports on the tellys. True - pikeys do grace this bar too, but there tends to be little hassle. No real reason to go here though as the Marquis and Symonds Well are so close by. 4/10

The Symonds Well, Epsom

Another good pub - well kept ales keep me here many a night. Friendly landlord, and lots of seating (to rear). Clean bar, up together and traditional. 18 - 80 would be comfortable here. 8/10

The Marquis of Granby, Epsom

NB/ The reviews below were before the refurb, and I would have agreed with all. Now under new management and fortunately looking better than it did, I would have to say the pub has been turned around in fantastic style. A superbly wide range of traditional and continental bevvies, some more unusual than others, and bright friendly bar staff, make this a superb bar. Moody lighting/ candles, but clean and up together. Happy staff - that's the ticket..(and beer of course!)8/10

The Cricketers, Epsom

Ember Inn 'familiarity'. A nice hole though (for drinking). A very 'safe' pub - doesn't really know what to do outside of sunny season, but pleasant nonetheless. Blanket no dogs / kids policy (inside) which I think is a shame but can understand it too. Atmos. never really gets going - no bias or theme. Good standard menu, nice at the end of a ramble on the common. Well kept beer + guest ales. 6/10

The Jolly Coopers, Epsom

A local pub for local people...!

Despite it's awkward location and unfotunate look, the Coopers offers a clean but rustic alternative to the Cricketers 'Ember clone' on the same road - cheaper too! Small but with 2 distinct bars - one quiet and more traditional, the other with TV, pool, dartboard etc. A limited variety of beers, but that's not what this pub's really all about. Somewhere local to have a couple of an evening.

The Derby Arms, Epsom Downs

Contrary to the last review (which looks suspiciously like a landlords own blackboard - hmmm), but nevertheless in line with all the other reviews:

The WORST pub on the Downs (and for several miles around)
PLUMMETING quality of service & ropey food
AWFUL management and thus we can't really HOPE for motivated staff then, can we?

Instead, try the Rubbing House, directly opposite, or the Tattenham Corner (Out & Out) just 1/2 mile along the racecourse. Much better!
