Nags Head On The Thames, Abingdon

This looks so much better now it has been done up. Popped in there on a Friday late afternoon and had a couple of pints of the local brew, Abingdon Bridge (or 'Bridge' as it's known). A mix of ages and felt like a nice atmosphere. I don't think you can get into the garden yet because the walkway is broken, hopefully this will be fixed before the warm weather comes in.

The Kings Head and Bell, Abingdon

So almost 3 years on from the re-furb. The KHB is a fantastic pub to go to in the town centre. The lovely courtyard is now sporting new outside furniture, plus plants! Covered area has comfy cushions and is quite a nice space to sit. Had a couple of good pints of Abingdon Bridge. There were a few other beers, plus plenty of ciders, lagers and wine. Food menu is better too - they do a fantastic burger. Yes, I know it's almost 10, but it's massive. Really good quality steak mince and a nice seeded ciabatta style roll - very nice! It does get very busy, especially when things are going on in the market place, but that shows that it truely is a good pub. I've been there a couple of times on my own (husband was away on boy's trip) and the staff were lovely and stopped to have a brief chat and make sure I was OK. Definitely recommend

The Old Anchor Inn, Abingdon

Another pub recently had a make-over. Really nice pub in a lovely location. Quite small, but good few beers on tap as well as plenty of other choices. Food is good. Definitely worth a visit

White Horse, Abingdon

This pub was recently refurbished and has a really nice feel to it. Been there a few times over the last couple of weeks and always been served quickly by really lovely bar staff. Ate there yesterday - really good food, can recommend the hand-battered halloumi! They have at least four beers on tap, plus plenty of lagers, wines and others. The garden is lovely. Because of where it is it gets a little noisy, especially when the kids on mopeds go past, but the nice high hedge means you don't have to look at them! Mixture of ages, and everyone seems to be there to just have a good time. Not the usually amounts of tattoos that you seem to get in other pubs in Abingdon (most notably the Boundary House!). The 'alternative olympics' held there last week was just hilarious! Long may the good atmosphere continue.

Boundary House, Abingdon

What a difference a year makes. The pub is a "Surf and Turf" pub - one down from a Hungry Horse. Food is cheap and OK, as long as you like burger and chips, fish and chips, steak and chips...... Beer is also much cheaper than any where else in the Abingdon area, but therein lies the problem. It's a huge pub and some days it is just full of lads - of various ages - seeing just how much they can drink and how loudly they can swear at their mates in the pub garden before coming in to see the football scores on one of the countless TV's. Not sure what this place is now aiming at, it has a children's play area and children's menu but I wouldn't want to take my child there. Sat outside one Saturday afternoon and two really drunk people (one in his 60's, one in his 20's) with a young child - just sat down at our table smoking and swearing at each other - delightful! Felt we couldn't say anything for fear of getting loads of abuse, so finished our drinks and went over to the Spread Eagle - much more civilized.

The Stocks Bar (Crown and Thistle Hotel), Abingdon

This pub is an absolute dive. Popped in one Saturday early evening on our way to somewhere else. Will never return! Used to be good for footie matches, but I am talking about Euro '96 - looks as if nothing has been done since well before then. The loos are disgusting and the staff were pretty non-plussed at having to serve someone. The decor is dated, grubby and just nasty!

They've done a really good job with doing this pub up. Really nice inside, good food and a decent amount of beers/lagers. Staff seem friendly - it's got to be the best pub in the town centre.

Brewery Tap, Abingdon

Good little pub, but I do think it has become a victim of its' own success. I've not been in during the last couple of years and it seems OK during the day, but gets pretty rowdy in the evening and you spend the entire time trying not to accidentally knock into people - especially as you get a look of 'did you spill my pint' on the way back from the loo! OK choice of beers, seems to focus on quite trendy, pricey lagers - 3+ for a pint of Peroni. But the bar staff seem friendly and once you're seated the atmosphere is good.

This pub has just been taken over by a couple from Yorkshire who seem really pleasant and really want this pub to do well. It is a big pub and has a large restaurant area, but is still relaxing to sit and have a drink. Hopefully once people will realise the change in management it will become popular again. We went in on a Wednesday night and there were only approx a dozen people - it used to be packed!
