Afraid to say cost cutting is starting to show in this once great pub. Regulary the pub is out of drinks and i do mean regularly. Something which has been a problem over the last couple of years and as i have been there occasionally over the last 10 or more years it really highlights this problem. This is not reflected in the beer prices though, which are soaring. Premium Larger is now an incredible 3.75!!!!
On the subject of beer i have seen this change particularly. According to my friends which are regulars the most popular beers were taken away and replaced with a "coloured water" called carling, amoungst others. Apprarently despite protestations to the relatively new owners nothing has changed. It is surmised that this is a rather feeble ploy to make people buy the premium larger (see above)
Had the sunday roast today and particularly considering the price was a dissapointment. The beef was so rare i'm surprised it didn't try to run away!
Other member of the party had the chicken and although tasty was a dissapointing portion, something that has also been noted by others.
In short although money has been spent making the place comfortable and modern, it has lost al lot of it's character and has lost a lot of custom to the local fox and hounds partly due to this. It is family friendly, but unfortunatley that is the best thing i can say about it.

Been here with my family two or three times since my last report, wow what a difference on the food front, got to be the best value pub for food in watford, burgers definately the best in town. Drinks good value for money wide selection of lagers including Peroni on draft and 3 real ales, staff really friendly and always a smile to be had, wouldnt hesitate to recommend this pub for a good value meal, its nothing fancy just good quality food at value for money prices, well done to the landlord you've turned a run down dodgy pub at times to something to be proud of.

Seems to be popular with fairly rough sorts. You get the impression you're not really welcome if you're not a regular. I have heard it had improved a bit recently, so I might try it again at some point. The Fox and Hounds (a couple of minutes down New Road) is far from amazing, but it's a good bit friendlier - go there instead.

I havnt been here for a while because the standard dropped considerably, but was in the area with my family last sunday (december 27) and thought we'd give it a second chance didnt expect much with it being just after christmas but i have to say its really turned around the food was good the service friendly and fantastic value for money, the pub was quite empty but im sure as word gets around that this is now a great place for a cheap meal and a decent pint that people will start coming back Well done the new managers
