user reviews of Shepherds Arms, Horbury

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

I've visited sporadically over about 35 years and seen many changes. Sometimes it was as dead as the proverbial doornail: sometimes you had to fight your way to the bar! Sometime's there's real ale; sometimes there isn't. It has had some very good quizzez from time to time, and can be quite cosy in a kind of 1970s "red plush" way. When it's good it's very good, but it does seem to have its mediocre intervals. That said, it's always a comfortable shelter on a wild, wet night!

Has changed management a few times since I last reviewed it. The latest lot recently left. I've not been in since, but it is a shame as they were trying to draw in punters with live music and other events

Never ever make the mistake of booking your son/daughters 18th or any other party at this venue!!!!!! The landlady who is irratic to say the least began throwing out people randomly for some absolutely unknown reason (there was no trouble - me and my husband had done the respoasible thing and attended to ensure it ran smoothly)! It transpired that staff weren't even aware that an 18th had been booked despite the fact that this had been inputted into a computer when I booked it 6 weeks previously. Instead of an apology, the landlay who is incapable of listening and just shouts and bawls over the top of you told me if I didn't like it 'Get out'!!!! Which, ofcourse we did! I have to say though that the gentleman serving behind the bar (whose name I didn't get) was very apologetic and pleasant - shame she didn't take a leaf out of his book. Don't go to this pub - the attitude towards customers is appauling!

Traditional old pub that wouldn't be out of place in a village in middle England. Apparently the oldest in the area.
Unfortunately doesn't have as much atosphere as it should, and doesn't do any good real ale. They used to, but I think they underwent a change of management a year or so ago and no longer seem to be bothered. Can be very quiet when I've gone in to watch a football game, and I have been in a few times on Saturday nights when they have karaoke. That used to be popular but even Saturday nights are really quiet now. Does stay open late. Does food suring the day, though I haven't had any there recently. I would have done a few months back, but they had ran out of chips (yes, really!)
It's not a bad place, but it could be a true gem with a little TLC
