user reviews of the Mash Tun, Aberlour

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

We quite liked this pub, set on the Whisky Trail and with a clear focus on whisky. However, they do have 2 ales too - Spey Valley David's Not So Bitter & Cairngorm Buzz. We ate here. Food was fine, If you don't mind a long wait. Has a nice setting alongside the Speyside Way. Most of the tables are reserved for diners.

As soon as I entered this place I sensed the atmosphere was all wrong. It felt more like a restaurant than a pub. Groups of tourists sat eating at the tables. There wasn't a single person in here for the beer (or the extensive selection of single malts). In other words, not a local in sight.
The pub is a single room, the bar against the wall on the left. There are three handpumps - only two were in use, serving Royston's Hoppy Handful and Cairngorm Wild Cat. Our choice - the Hoppy Handful - wasn't up to much. We then moved on to the malts, which were good.
All the tables were reserved for evening meals as we left. I had been looking forward to visiting this 'pub' for a while but on this showing I won't be rushing back.

Aberlour - two pubs. One the Aberlour Hotel which was dreadful, the other The Mashed Tun which was ok, but a bit upper crust. Had one real ale on handpull (Cairngorm Wildcat 5.1%) which I sampled - reasonable. There were others available in bottles. My mate hade Miller in a bottle after being reliably informed that Tennents was the national drink of Scotland by a man with an English accent...get the picture?

A fabulous pub with very friendly staff - good food - real ales and a magnificent range of whiskys.
