user reviews of Sir Samuel Romilly, Barry

Disappointing Wetherspoons pub in Barry town centre. It was reasonably busy on my early Sunday afternoon visit. Ales were Mumbles Gold, Trumans Ipanema, Wychwood Hobgoblin, Brains SA, Rhymney King's Ale & Export, Greene King Abbot, Ruddles Best & Sharps Doom Bar. My disappointment was the fact that this branch does not stock real cider. Service was friendly though. I'm sure I've seen the barmaid that served me somewhere before! The building is nice, if not dark inside. I didn't try the lower level, that was apparently this former bank's vaults. That looked a bit brighter. I moved on quickly to get my cider fix at the excellent Barry West End Club (sadly not listed on here, but the highlight of my trip to South Wales).

Very suprised by my visit here bearing in mind the run down area it's in.

It's a lovely big building, inside is nicely lit and gives a relaxing atmosphere with lots of different seating areas including a sun trap outside beer patio. A good range of ales all @ 1.80pint when i called in. 3 people serving behind the bar at 16.45 on a thurs led to a more than was expected fast spoons service, could not fault the place, 8/10

New build spoons, and a welcome addition to the fairly mediocre Barry pub scene, though Gordon Bennetts isn't too bad.

Been in a few times, the ale is the spoons usuals plus Vale of Glamorgan brewery, though last night there was Bullmastiff on as well. (Same kind of range as Penarth spoons.) Didn't seem to have many of the beer festival brews on while that was running. Sparklers on everything but a top up has always been given when asked for. Gets a bit anarchic at weekends,6 bouncers and you can't use the side door at night. Bouncer tried to "clothes line" me (stuck his arm straight out!) when I tried to get in this way one night, much to the embarrassment of the manager standing beside him,who apologised.

One thing I did notice is that in common with several spoons at present is that the glassware is dirty("stripes" inside the glass when full of beer) and the WIFI doesn't work.

Will do what spoons say on the tin,but little else.
