I've been told this pub is now closed????

I've now revised my opinion. The pub has changed hands although still owned by Enterprise Inns. The beers remain limited (Sharps Doom Bar and Butcombe) but they are decently kept. The welcome, however, is much improved and the pub is now dog-friendly. It now feels more like a pub.

The landlords are friendly enough but the pub is devoid of character. Too clean by half and a bit like being in someone's front room that's kept for special occasions. A village local it in't any longer. Food is the priority and most of those drinking at the bar are waiting to eat. The food is decent enough but you wouldn't want to travel for it. There's no dartboard and dogs are not allowed in the pub - so don't expect a warm welcome after a country walk with Fido. You could sit in the attractive gardens but you wouldn't want to if it's cold or wet. There is not a good selection of beers - they take the two that Enterprise Inns give them and I didn't get the impression the landlords were interested much in beer. The wine list is nothing to write home about .
It does boast some pub awards but, significantly, they seem to stop in about 2005.
If you are looking for traditional pub with a very good selection of local beers and customers who appreciate that, then go to the Muddled man in West Chinnock (0.7m). The other good village pub is the Lord Nelson in Norton sub Hamdon (0.8m) - both are much more relaxed places to be, serve food and are dog-friendly.

Fantastic food and very friendly landlords, Avril & Duncan. Always enjoy my time, beer and food at The Cat Head. Well worth turning off the A303 for.
