user reviews of Rutland Arms Hotel, Newmarket

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

I stayed here recently as part of a stag group so this review is as much of the hotel as it is the bar.
The rooms are very dated in decor and refinement but still comfortable, especially the bed. The hotel consists of three buildings connected by corridors over a courtyard and then a road. Finding your way around is an adventure! Breakfast had a wide choice from croissant through all the trad English fried to kippers. None of us ate there in the evening as we were across the road watching the Euros. The bar seems to be little used as it has no atmosphere and the High Street is full of pubs. A real ale is now served in the form of Greene King IPA which was adequately kept but has little else going for it.
The staff were very attentive and friendly however and couldn't be faulted.

Still nothing except Guinness served up by a barmaid who clearly wanted to be somewhere else. Service from the kitchen was quick and the food was tasty but a tad expensive. Grubby tables that had obviously not been cleaned since yesterday - at least - enhanced the feeling that this is a place which has seen better days.

A tradional old coaching Inn dominates the High Street but no real ales they do serve Guiness but nothing else..

Its a shame as I have enjoyed a meal in there before but the lack of real ales is a big disappointment.

Upmarket hotel that opens its bar and restaurant to the public. Lovely place to go for afternoon tea and cakes but no real ale.

A large imposing Hotel in the High Street. It seemed the sort of place to have hand pumped ales so again we tried. Unfortunately only keg/fizz beer in here so we promptly left. I find it very strange when a traditional coaching inn cannot offer at least one hand pumped ale. A local ale something like Adnams Bitter, Woodfordes Wherry or Elgoods Cambridge. This I am sure would go down well with the guests of the hotel and visitors.
