user reviews of the Shovel Inn, Carnforth

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

The first thing I notice as I walk up to enter the Shovel is that its up for rent.

Once you come inside you sort of understand why the pub is up for rent, there's 3 separate seating areas but only 5 punters and they are all stood at the bar ignoring the football!

3 ales across the pumps, Twaites Wainwright, Jennings Cumberland and Marstons New World. The Cumberland was excellent.

Within 10 minutes of being in the crowd doubled.

This is actually a decent pub that's a bit on its arse but has decent ales that are kept right, a friendly clientele and a happy chatty bar man.

The Shovel is the best pub in Carnforth, hands down; the open fire gives it a warm country-pub feel, the main room is full of interesting Carnforth paraphernalia, the owners are friendly, as are the locals, and most importantly, the beer is both well kept and reasonably priced.

So, why only 8? Well, recent visits have left me longing for the days that I could walk in and know that Timothy Taylor's Landlord or Hopback Summer Lightning would be sat on the bar. On my last visit, both guest ales were 3.8% or under, which left me feeling more bloated than drunk.

They show live sport, which is great. If there's no sport on, a music channel will be playing. A minor criticism is that sometimes the music a touch too loud, and when it's of the more contemporary, dance-y persuasion, it can clash with the atmosphere of the pub and be a little distracting.

But that's just a personal thing, and it does little to change my opinion that this is a fantastic place to get well and truly 'shovelled'.

Called in this pub as it looked real cosy from the outside and i wasn't disappointed! The welcome was warm, the service friendly and the atmosphere was relaxed and friendly. A typical pub with no frills that is something similar to sitting in your front room with friends! Well worth a visit for those who enjoy a chat and a relaxing drink in good surroundings!Forgot to say take your dogs as they probably get more fuss than the customers!!!!!
